Integrating racialization experiences during clinical assessments would help practitioners to gain a more comprehensive picture of how these identities and experiences may shape the stress, distress, and mental health outcomes (e.g., depression, anxiety) of different racial and ethnic Latinx groups in the U.S.Although advances in cancer treatment and early diagnosis have significantly improved cancer survival rates, cancer therapies can cause serious side effects, including ovarian failure and infertility, in women of reproductive age. Infertility following cancer treatment can have significant adverse effects on the quality of life. However, established methods for fertility preservation, including embryo or oocyte cryopreservation, are not always suitable for female cancer patients because of complicated individual conditions and treatment methods. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation and transplantation is a promising option for fertility preservation in pre-pubertal girls and adult patients with cancer who require immediate treatment, or who are not eligible to undergo ovarian stimulation. This review introduces various methods and strategies to improve ovarian tissue cryopreservation and transplantation outcomes, to help patients and clinicians choose the best option when considering the potential complexity of a patient's situation. Effective multidisciplinary oncofertility strategies, involving the inclusion of a highly skilled and experienced oncofertility team that considers cryopreservation methods, thawing processes and devices, surgical procedures for transplantation, and advances in technologies, are necessary to provide high-quality care to a cancer patient.Drug resistance has become a threat to global health, and new interventions are needed to control major infectious diseases. The composition of gut microbiota has been linked to human health and has been associated with severity of malaria. Fermented foods contribute to the community of healthy gut bacteria. Despite the studies connecting gut microbiota to the prevention of malaria transmission and severity, research on developing functional foods for the purpose of manipulating the gut microbiota for malaria control is limited. This review summarizes recent knowledge on the role of the gut microbiota in malaria prevention and treatment. This information should encourage the search for lactic acid bacteria expressing α-Gal and those that exhibit the desired immune stimulating properties for the development of functional food and probiotics for malaria control.

Unfair treatment on the basis of body weight is common in the West and associated with lower well-being, starting at least as early as adolescence. We examine whether the frequency and predictors and correlates of weight discrimination seen in the West extend to adolescents in China.

Participants (N=1539) were adolescents in China who took part in a longitudinal study of mental health and academic burnout in high school. At Wave 1, participants reported on their personality and well-being and completed a school health check that included measured height and weight. At Wave 2 approximately 6 months later, participants reported on experiences with unfair treatment and completed the same measures of well-being.

Of 10 attributions for unfair treatment, weight was most common at 18%. Female gender and body mass index were associated with greater risk of reporting weight discrimination. Emotional stability, conscientiousness, and state happiness measured at Wave 1 were associated with lower risk of weight discrimination at Wave 2. Concurrently, weight discrimination was associated with lower happiness, less life satisfaction, and more distress.

The uptake of risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) in Asian countries is variable despite being the most effective option for ovarian cancer risk reduction in BRCA mutation carriers. Exploration of factors which may impact the RRSO decision-making of BRCA mutation carriers from Malaysia, a developing country in Southeast Asia, was undertaken.

In-depth interviews with 28 Malaysian BRCA mutation carriers with a history of breast cancer were conducted in addition to observing their RRSO decision-making consultations in the clinic.

The decision-making considerations among the carriers were centered around the overarching theme of "Negotiating cancer risk and womanhood priorities," with the following themes (1) risk perception, (2) self-preservation, (3) motherhood obligation, and (4) the preciousness of marriage. Cognitive knowledge of BRCA risk was often conceptualized based on personal and family history of cancer, personal beliefs, and faith. Many women reported fears that RRSO would affect them physically and emotionally, worrying about the post-surgical impact on their motherhood responsibilities. Nevertheless, some reported feeling obliged to choose RRSO for the sake of their children. For some, their husband's support and approval were critical, with emotional well-being and sexuality reportedly perceived as important to sustaining married life. Despite reporting hesitancy toward RRSO, women's decisions about choosing this option evolved as their priorities changed at different stages of life.

Our randomized controlled trial (RCT) of the group-based Game Changers intervention demonstrated effects on the primary goal of increased HIV-protective behaviors among social network members (alters), via the mechanism of increased participant engagement in HIV prevention advocacy with alters. We sought to understand how and in what context the intervention has its effects by examining specific mediators and moderators of the intervention's effect on increased prevention advocacy.

The RCT was conducted with 98 adult PLWH in Uganda. Intervention content targeted internalized HIV stigma, HIV disclosure, positive living behaviors, and self-efficacy for advocacy; these constructs were examined as intervention mediators (at the 5-month follow-up) of advocacy effects reported at the 8-month follow-up. Baseline sample characteristics were explored as moderators.

Internalized HIV stigma and HIV disclosure mediated intervention effects on prevention advocacy, but not antiretroviral adherence or self-efficacy for advocacy. Moderators of the intervention effect included several network characteristics (trust in, support from, stigma from, and connectedness among network members), but not respondent socio-demographics or HIV disease characteristics. The intervention was associated with greater prevention advocacy when trust in, support from, and connectedness among alters were high, and stigma from alters was low.

These findings highlight the importance of helping PLWH cope with self-stigma and gain comfort with disclosure, as well as the potential influence of network support, trustworthiness, connectedness, and stigmatization on engagement in prevention advocacy.

Recent metabolomics research has advanced our understanding of the relationship between metabolic reprogramming and gastric cancer progression and led to the discovery of metabolic targets for potential clinical applications and therapeutic interventions. As a powerful tool for metabolite and flux measurement, metabolomics not only allows a comprehensive analysis of metabolites and related metabolic pathways but also can investigate the interactions between gastric cancer cells and tumour microenvironment as well as between the cancer cells and gastric microbiome. In this chapter, we aim to summarize the recent advances in gastric cancer metabolism and discuss the applications of metabolomics for target discovery in gastric cancer.Oral/head and neck cancer is the sixth most common human malignancies in the world. Despite the treatment advances in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, the patient survival has not been significantly improved in the past several decades. As a new methodological approach, metabolomics may help reveal the metabolic reprogramming mechanisms underlying head and neck cancer cell proliferation, invasion, and metastasis and may be used to identify metabolite biomarkers for clinical applications of the disease. Multiple key biological pathways such as proliferation, energy metabolism, invasion, and metastasis are governed by these genes; thus, HIF-1-mediated pathways are equally pivotal in both physiology and pathology.As we gain knowledge on the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of HIF-1, a great focus has been placed on elucidating the cellular function of HIF-1, particularly the role of HIF-1 in cancer pathogenesis pathways such as proliferation, invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis.
