To investigate the childhood school outcomes for infants born to women with hypertensive disorders during pregnancy.
A retrospective population-based cohort study linking perinatal data from 2003 to 2013 to developmental scores at preparatory school and educational scores at school grades 3, 5, and 7 in Victoria, Australia. Exposures of interest were the presence of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy and iatrogenic delivery for preeclampsia. Multivariable logistic regression and generalised estimating equation models were employed.
In total, 682,386 births ≥32weeks' gestation were linked to 175,665 child developmental results and 412,834 with at least one educational result. Compared to infants born to women without a hypertensive disorder, infants born to women with a hypertensive disorder had no increased risk of poorer developmental outcomes at school entry but a significantly increased risk of poorer educational outcomes across grades 3, 5, and 7. Compared to infants born to women without preeclampsia, infants born to women iatrogenically delivered for preeclampsia had no increased risk of poorer developmental outcomes (aOR=1.12, 95% CI 0.98-1.28) but a significantly increased risk of poorer educational outcomes at grades 3 (aOR=1.23, 95% CI 1.09-1.38), 5 (aOR=1.27, 95% CI 1.13-1.43), and 7 (aOR=1.24, 95% CI 1.09-1.43).

We conducted a quantitative meta-analysis using activation likelihood estimation (GingerALE 3.0.2) to identify regions AM retrieval engaged in younger and older adults across 45 studies (Nyounger = 24 studies, 357 participants, 349 foci; Nolder = 21 studies, 299 participants, 356 foci), considering methodological differences in cueing AMs (i.e., using generic vs. specific/personalized cues). Both age-groups commonly engaged a left-lateralized pattern of brain activity that included the hippocampus, retrosplenial/posterior cingulate cortex, and angular gyrus. Younger adults showed enhanced right posterior cingulate cortical activity, while older adults presented with bilateral activity in the hippocampus, and enhanced activity in left middle temporal gyrus, precuneus, and retrosplenial cortex. Exploratory analyses indicated that age-related commonalties and differences in brain activity depended on the method of AM cuing. We assessed relationships between voice measures and 10-year cognitive changes in the MIDUS national sample of middle-aged and older adults ages 42-92, with a mean age of 64.09 (standard deviation = 11.23) at the second wave. Seven cognitive tests were assessed in 2003-2004 (Wave 2) and 2013-2014 (Wave 3). Voice measures were collected at Wave 3 (N = 2585) from audio recordings of the cognitive interviews. Analyses controlled for age, education, depressive symptoms, and health. As predicted, higher jitter was associated with greater declines in episodic memory, verbal fluency, and attention switching. Lower pulse was related to greater decline in episodic memory, and fewer voice breaks were related to greater declines in episodic memory and verbal fluency, although the direction of these effects was contrary to hypotheses. This study seeks to characterise multiple pathways for firefighters' exposure to PFAS. PFAS were analysed in 688 environmental samples such as eggs, fruits, vegetables, dust, soil, surface swabs, appliance washes and water obtained from fire stations. Relevant exposure pathways were identified and daily intake levels were estimated using PFAS concentrations and exposure factors relevant to firefighters. Five PFAS including perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), 62 fluorotelomer sulfonate (62 FTS), and 82 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (82 FTS) were frequently detected in the samples. Based on the median concentrations in each sample type, PFOS was the most abundant contaminant in eggs (80%), fruits (52%), dust (81%), surface swab (66%), soil (83%) and appliance wash (31%) samples. On the other hand, PFHxS was most abundant in vegetables (77%) and 82 FTS in water (58%). The intake estimation results show that dietary exposure from ingestion of foods produced on fire stations was the predominant exposure pathway, representing 82% and 62% of firefighters' total PFAS intake under typical and worst-case exposure scenarios, respectively. Incidental ingestion and dermal absorption of PFAS in dust contributed 15% for typical and 34% for worst-case exposure scenarios. The relative contributions from incidental ingestion and dermal absorption of PFAS in soil and appliance washes were insignificant. Overall, the study identifies multiple exposure pathways relevant to career firefighters including consumption of food grown on fire stations, which has not previously been recognised within the occupational exposure context. The results suggest exposure control strategies that target foods produced on fire stations could substantially reduce firefighters' exposure to PFAS.
