According to the Presupposition-Denial Account, complement set reference arises when focus is on the shortfall between the amount conveyed by a natural language quantifier and a larger, expected amount. Negative quantifiers imply a shortfall, through the denial of a presupposition, whereas positive quantifiers do not. An exception may be provided by irony. One function of irony is to highlight, through indirect negation, the shortfall between what is expected/desired, and what is observed. Thus, a positive quantifier used ironically should also lead to a shortfall and license complement set reference. Using ERPs, we examined whether reference to the complement set is more felicitous following a positive quantifier used ironically than one used non-ironically. ERPs during reading showed a smaller N400 for complement set reference following an ironic compared to a non-ironic context. The shortfall generated thorough irony is sufficient to allow focus on the complement set, supporting the Presupposition-Denial Account.

Functional connectivity (FC) is increasingly used as target for neuromodulation and enhancement of performance. A reliable assessment of FC with electroencephalography (EEG) currently requires a laboratory environment with high-density montages and a long preparation time. This study investigated the feasibility of reconstructing source FC with a low-density EEG montage towards a usage in real life applications.

Source FC was reconstructed with inverse solutions and quantified as node degree of absolute imaginary coherence in alpha frequencies. We used simulated coherent point sources as well as two real datasets to investigate the impact of electrode density (19 vs. 128 electrodes) and usage of template vs. individual MRI-based head models on localization accuracy. In addition, we checked whether low-density EEG is able to capture inter-individual variations in coherence strength.

In numerical simulations as well as real data, a reduction of the number of electrodes led to less reliable reconstructions of coherent sources and of coupling strength. Yet, when comparing different approaches to reconstructing FC from 19 electrodes, source FC obtained with beamformers outperformed sensor FC, FC computed after independent component analysis, and source FC obtained with sLORETA. In particular, only source FC based on beamformers was able to capture neural correlates of motor behavior.

Reconstructions of FC from low-density EEG is challenging, but may be feasible when using source reconstructions with beamformers.

To study treatment outcomes of combination treatment of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injection and laser photocoagulation in Type 1 Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) and Aggressive Posterior ROP (APROP).

This is a retrospective observational study of 87 eyes of 48 premature babies who presented with Type I ROP or APROP and were treated with combination of laser and anti-VEGF therapy. Retrospective evaluation of case records was done to collect data on gestational age, birth weight, age at intervention, anterior segment and fundus findings, intervention with laser and anti-VEGF and response to treatment. Outcome measure was defined as attached retina at posterior pole at last follow-up.

Mean gestational age was 29.1weeks, and mean birth weight was 1226.9 gms. Sixty-six (75.8%) eyes had Type I ROP and 21 (24.1%) eyes had APROP at presentation. Five eyes (3 patients) were lost to follow-up after treatment. Of 82 eyes, 80.5% (66 eyes) showed regression of ROP following combination treatment and 19.5% (16 eyes) needed surgery. Of these, 15 underwent surgery and 12 had successful outcome. Mean follow-up duration of patients was 52weeks. Finally, 95.1% (78 eyes) had attached retina at posterior pole and 4.9% (4 eyes) had detached retina.

We conclude that combination therapy is an effective and safe treatment strategy for Type I ROP and APROP.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation is a common procedure to reduce cardiovascular morbidity but is limited by recurrence. The objective of this study was to determine if post-ablation acute surface P wave morphology and other electrocardiographic parameters correlate with AF recurrence.

The Avoiding Bladder Catheters During AF ablation (ABCD-AF) trial was a randomized, prospective trial in 160 subjects undergoing AF ablation. The present study examined correlation between AF recurrence in follow-up and acute post-ablation electrocardiographic P wave parameters.

Median follow-up was 255 (188, 306) days. selleck chemicals llc The ABCD-AF cohort had a mean age of 62.7 ± 12.8 with 32.1% being females. Rate of recurrent AF was 35.8%, with a median time to AF of 135 (109, 182) days. There was no baseline demographic associated with AF recurrence. There was more AF recurrence in those with longer follow-up (p = 0.001). Lead 2 PR interval, lead 2 P wave duration/PR (Pdur/PR), lead V1 PR interval, and lead V1 Pdur/PR were all significantly associated with recurrent AF (p = 0.03, 0.02, 0.01, 0.01). link2 Longer PR and shorter Pdur/PR predicted AF recurrence. In a multivariable model, lead V1 Pdur/PR provided the best predictor of AF recurrence, with an odds ratio of 0.018 (p = 0.016) per standard deviation change.

Shorter P wave duration combined with longer AV node delay, as measured by proportion of the PR that the P wave occupies, was the best predictor of AF recurrence post-ablation.

We retrospectively reviewed our experience of the procurement, processing, and storage of bone grafts at a bone bank in Karachi, Pakistan, the first bone bank to be established in a public sector hospital in Pakistan. The bone bank was established at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), Karachi, in collaboration with Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dow University of Health Sciences/Civil Hospital, Karachi (CHK) in May, 2015. Since then, a large number of bone grafts from the tissue bank have been used for various orthopedic procedures. This paper describes the problems and challenges faced in establishing and running a tissue bank in a Muslim and a developing country and the progress of the bone bank over the first 4 years. A total of 93 bone grafts were retrieved and preserved in the bone bank over the 4-year period. Among these, 56 (60.2%) bones were retrieve is the preliminary report on the establishment and functioning of a bone bank in a public sector hospital in Pakistan. The favorable outcome has inculcated confidence in orthopedic surgeons for greater use of bone allografts for a variety of indications in this country.

An outbreak of a novel respiratory disease due to coronavirus species was emerged in 2019 and named as Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19). Clinical and immunological factors affecting the course of COVID-19 in kidney transplant recipients (KTR) are not well-known.

In this prospective observational study, we presented 20 KTR with COVID-19 pnemonia and examined the factors predicting the severity of COVID-19. A total of 10 KTR without COVID-19 was used as control group. Lymphocyte subsets were determined by flow cytometry. In 13/20 patients, immunophenotyping was repeated 1week later.

Mean age of the patients was 50 ± 9years. Patients were classified as mild-moderate (oxygen saturation SO

 > 90%) and severe disease groups (SO

≤ 90%). Serum albumin and hemoglobin were lower and CRP, fibrinogen and peak D-dimer were higher in severe group. Peak CRP was inversely associated with nadir SO

(r =  - 0.68, p = 0.001). Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio was higher in severe group (p = 0.01). CD3 + and CD4 + cells were lower and NK cell percentage (CD16 + 56 +) was higher in severe group. Percentage of spontaneously activated CD8 cells (CD8 + CD69 +) was higher in severe group. In comparison of KTR with and without COVID-19, CD8 + cells were lower but NK cell percentage was higher in KTR with COVID-19.

In this pilot study, increased NK cells, activated CD8 + cells and decreased CD3 + and CD4 + cells were associated with severity of COVID-19 in KTR. Peripheral immunophenotyping of lymphocyte subtypes may provide prognostic information about the clinical course of COVID-19 in KTR.

Maize plants employ diversified defense strategies and alter the spatiotemporal distribution of several classes of defensive compounds to affect insect herbivore performance. However, only little knowledge is available about the defense orchestration of maize in response to Spodoptera litura, a voracious Noctuidae pest. In order to decipher the defense status of Zea mays (African tall variety) against S. litura, a comparative feeding bioassay was executed, which revealed reduced performance of the herbivore on maize. In order to understand the molecular mechanism behind maize tolerance against S. litura, a microarray-based genome-wide expression analysis was performed. The comparative analysis displayed 792 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), wherein 357 genes were upregulated and 435 genes were downregulated at fold change ≥ 2 and p value ≤ 0.05. The upregulated genes were identified and categorized as defense-related, oxidative stress-related, transcription regulatory genes, protein synthesis genes, phytohormone-related, and primary and secondary metabolism-related. In contrast, downregulated genes were mainly associated with plant growth and development, indicating a balance of growth and defense response and utilization of a highly evolved C-diversion response were noticed. Maize plants showed better tolerance against herbivory and maintained its fitness using a combinatorial strategy. This peculiar response of Zea mays against S. litura offers an excellent possibility of managing polyphagous pests by spicing up the plant's defensive response with tolerance mechanism.

In Virginia, Black women experience higher rates of adverse birth and labor outcomes that may not be explained solely by risky behaviors or social standing. Previous studies have found an association between racial discrimination and adverse birth outcomes; however, their findings may be underpowered due to small sample sizes. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between racial discrimination and poor birth outcomes.

VA PRAMS (2016-2018) was used for this secondary data analysis of mothers age 15-44. link3 The exposure was measured using two VA PRAMS questions on racial discrimination and information on the outcomes were extracted from birth certificate data. Simple logistic regression was used obtain an association between experiencing racial discrimination and adverse birth outcomes (i.e. preterm birth, low birth weight, and small for gestational age) and to identify risk factors for experiencing racial discrimination. Multivariate logistic regressions were performed after controlling for other covariates.
