The terms 8D, 9D and 16D in music audio refer to different techniques that essentially 'trick the brain' into listening in three dimensions. These techniques use equalization and panning to create the impression that the music is coming from various directions around the listener. They can create a very realistic listening experience, and can make the sounds feel like they are inside your head.

The best way to experience 8D audio is by using headphones. The sound will be more 'in your head' and you can move with the beat, almost as if you are there. The audio effects can also be used in movies and video games to add a 3D feel to them. You may also notice the difference if you listen to stereo tracks with headphones versus speakers. It is important to remember that these types of audio processing can cause tinnitus and hearing damage if it is listened to too loudly.

In addition to the new 8D sound, there are many other enhancements in this version of MUSIC. Probably the most significant change is a Tracks Window that looks and behaves just like a DAW tracks window, allowing lossless data manipulation of individual tracks. There are also new floating windows for Styles, RealTracks, Loops, UserTracks, MIDI SuperTracks, Melodists and Chord Options. In musik4d to these major new features, a number of legacy modal dialogs have been redone as non-modal floating windows, so they can be open and used interactively while other functions are running.

Another great feature is a new smart MIDI keyboard controller called Komplete Kontrol S88. It offers pre-mapped control of NI's Komplete instruments and third-party plugins that support the NKS standard. Having direct keyboard access to key actions such as play, stop and record arming can be a huge time saver and avoid having to reach for your mouse. It also has tighter DAW and Maschine integration than the Mk III, so it is a much more complete tool for professional musicians.

Other notable enhancements include the ability to add a multi-touch screen, and improved synchronization between multiple instances of MUSIC. There is also a much faster Giga-Byte processor for increased performance and stability. A new plug-in architecture for AU is also included, making it easier to expand and customize MUSIC's functionality.

For more information about MUSIC, visit the NI website. You can also find an online demonstration of the new features at the NI demo page. The first demo is a short overview, and the second one is an in-depth look at how MUSIC is used in an actual production. Also check out musik4d and the community forum for additional resources. You can even submit questions and feedback directly to the MUSIC team via the contact form. NI has already received lots of great ideas from users about how they want MUSIC to be even better! MUSIC 4D is available for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. A free trial is available.
