To investigate whether visual experience with habitual blur alters the neural processing of suprathreshold contrast in emmetropic and highly aberrated eyes.

A large stroke adaptive optics system was used to correct ocular aberrations. Contrast constancy was assessed psychophysically in emmetropic and keratoconic eyes using a contrast matching paradigm. Participants adjusted the contrasts of gratings at various spatial frequencies to match the contrast perception of a reference grating at 4 c/deg. Matching was done both with fully corrected and uncorrected ocular aberrations. Optical correction allowed keratoconus patients to perceive high spatial frequencies that they have not experienced for some time.

Emmetropic observers exhibited contrast constancy both with their native aberrations and when their aberrations were corrected. Keratoconus patients exhibited contrast constancy with their uncorrected, native optics but they did not exhibit constancy during adaptive optics correction. Instead. they exhib keratoconus patients when their optics were corrected suggests that they were unable to learn the appropriate neural amplification because they did not have experience with fine spatial detail. These results show that even adults can learn neural amplification to counteract the effects of their own optical aberrations.

Following retinal detachment (RD) photoreceptors (PRs) sustain hypoxic stress and eventually die. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) plays a central role in cellular adaptation to hypoxia. The purpose of this study is to determine the necessity of HIF-1α on PR cell survival after RD.

Experimental RD was created in mice by injection of hyaluronic acid (1%) into the subretinal space. Mice with conditional HIF-1α knockout in rods (denoted as HIF-1αΔrod) were used. HIF-1α expression in retinas was measured real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blotting. PR cell death after RD was evaluated using TUNEL assay. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and histology were used to evaluate retinal layer thicknesses and PR cell densities. A hypoxia signaling pathway PCR array was used to examine the expression of HIF-1α target genes after RD.

HIF-1α protein levels were significantly increased after RD, and depletion of HIF-1α in rods blunted this increase. A compensatory increase of HIF-2α protein was observed in HIF-1αΔrod mice. Conditional knockout (cKO) of HIF-1α in rods did not lead to any morphologic change in attached retinas but resulted in significantly increased PR cell loss after RD. HIF-1α cKO in rods altered the responses to retinal detachment for 25 out of 83 HIF-1α target genes that were highly enriched for genes involved in glycolysis.

To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis estimating the accuracy of thyroid FNB for diagnosis of malignancy in adults with a newly diagnosed thyroid nodule and to characterize changes in accuracy over time.

PubMed, SCOPUS, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from 1975 to 2020 using search terms related to FNB accuracy in the thyroid.

English-language reports of cohort studies or randomized trials of adult patients undergoing thyroid FNB with sample size of 20 or greater and using a reference standard of surgical histopathology or clinical follow-up were included. Articles that examined only patients with known thyroid disease or focused on accuracy of novel adjuncts, such as molecular tests, were excluded. Two investigators screened each article and resolved conflicts by consensus. A total of 36 of 1023 stu could explain observed heterogeneity.

However, with increasing application potentials, thermoelectrics is now facing a major challenge developing high-performance, Pb-free, and low-toxic thermoelectric materials and devices.As one group of promising candidates, GeTe derivatives have the potential to replace the widely used thermoelectric materials containing highly toxic elements. Across two dyadic studies, one cross-sectional (N = 103 couples) and one longitudinal (N = 147 couples), people higher in sexual communal strength had sex for more autonomous and less controlled reasons, and in turn, reported greater satisfaction and desire, overall, in daily life, and over time. In contrast, people higher in unmitigated sexual communion endorsed more controlled reasons for engaging in sex, and in turn reported lower satisfaction. Partners of people higher in sexual communal strength reported less controlled reasons for engaging in sex, and in turn, both partners felt more satisfied, whereas partners of people high in unmitigated sexual communion endorsed more controlled reasons and reported lower satisfaction. This research furthers our understanding of when and why being motivated to be responsive to a partner's sexual needs enhances or detracts from sexual and relationship quality.

Adolescents and young people have been historically understudied populations, and previous studies indicate that during epidemics, these populations, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), are at high risk of developing mental disturbances.

To identify the existing evidence regarding the association of mental health with outbreaks of the influenza A (H1N1), Zika, Ebola, and SARS-CoV-2 virus in exposed youth and adolescents in LMICs.

Across 6 databases (Embase, Cochrane Library, PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science), the mental health outcomes of adolescents and youth (aged 10-24 years) associated with 4 major pandemic outbreaks from January 2009 to January 2021 in LMICs were reviewed. A group of 3 authors at each stage carried out the screening, selection, and quality assessment using Joanna Briggs Institute checklists. The social determinants of adolescent well-being framework was used as a guide to organizing the review.

A total of 57 studies fulfilled the search criteria, 5-related complications, requiring more responsive interventions and further research. Geographically localized disease outbreaks such as Ebola, Zika, and H1N1 influenza are highly understudied and warrant future investigation.

Results of this systematic scoping review suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic and H1N1 epidemic were associated with adverse mental health among adolescents and youth from LMICs. Vulnerable youth and adolescents may be at higher risk of developing mental health-related complications, requiring more responsive interventions and further research. Geographically localized disease outbreaks such as Ebola, Zika, and H1N1 influenza are highly understudied and warrant future investigation.
