Little is known about the influence of the saturation degree of long chain fatty acids (LCFAs) on the bio-methane potential of calcium-LCFAs salts. In this study, palmitic acid and oleic acid were chosen as the model compounds to investigate the impact of saponification between calcium and saturated/unsaturated LCFAs on the methane recovery from LCFAs in anaerobic digestion. A 2.2-fold enhancement of methane yield was obtained due to the formation of calcium palmitate, which was primarily attributed to the enhanced bio-aggregation and significant change of microbial community. However, saponification between calcium and oleic acid decreased the methane recovery from oleic acid digestion. Only partial saponification with excess oleic acid led to 4% increment of methane production. The low bio-accessibility of calcium oleate and the little change of microbial community may be responsible for the small difference of methane recovery due to the formation of calcium oleate. The ability of microalgae to grow in a broad spectrum of wastewaters manifests great potentials for removing contaminants from effluents of industries and urban areas. Since the post-treatment microalgae biomass is also a significant source of high-value products, microalgae-based wastewater treatment is an economical and sustainable solution to wastewater management. Adding more value, the integration of microalgae with living/non-living materials looks more promising. Microalgae-based treatment technology has certain limitations like high operational costs, problematic harvesting, large land requirements, and hindrance in photosynthesis due to turbid wastewater. These challenges need to be essentially addressed to achieve enhanced wastewater remediation. This review has highlighted the potential applications of microalgae in contaminant removal from wastewaters, simultaneous resource recovery, efficient microalgae-based hybrid systems along with bottlenecks and prospects. This state-of-the-art article will edify the role of microalgae in wastewater remediation, biomass valorization for bio-based products, and present numerous possibilities in strengthening the circular bioeconomy.Conventional sewage treatment applying activated sludge processes is energy-intensive and requires great financial input, hampering widespread implementation. The introduction of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR) followed by an algal reactor growing species of commercial interest, may present an alternative, contributing to the envisaged resource recovery at sewage treatment plants. AnMBRs can be applied for organic matter removal with energy self-sufficiency, provided that effective membrane fouling management is applied. Haematococcus pluvialis, an algal species with commercial value, can be selected for ammonium and phosphate removal. Theoretical analysis showed that good pollutant removal, positive financial output, as well as a significant reduction in the amount of hazardous activated sludge can be achieved by applying the proposed process, showing interesting advantages over current sewage treatment processes. Microbial contamination to H. pluvialis is a challenge, and technologies for preventing the contamination during continuous sewage treatment need to be applied. The high-nitrogen content and dense structure of poultry manure compost cause volatilization of N to ammonia (NH3). This study evaluated the combined application of biochar and biotrickling filtration (BTF) to remove of odor in chicken manure mixed straw compost (w/w, 2.51). CDK inhibition Adding of 10% biochar reduced NH3, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) contents by 20.04%, 16.18%, and 17.55% respectively, and decreased the N loss rate by 8.27%, compared with those observed in control. The organic matter content decreased by 28.11% and germination index reached 97.36% in the experimental group. Meanwhile, the N-cycling microorganisms such as Pusillimonas and Pseudomonas became more active, and the relative abundance of sulfur-cycling microorganisms Hydrogenispora decreased in the experimental group. Following BTF application, the NH3, H2S, and TVOCs removal rates reached 95%, 97%, and 53%, respectively. In the present study, a dark fermentation system inoculated with mixed culture bacteria (MCB) was developed using prepared alkali-based magnetic nanosheets (AMNSs) to facilitate biohydrogen (BioH2) production. The highest BioH2 yields of 232.8 ± 8.5 and 150.3 ± 4.8 mL/g glucose were observed at 100 (mesophilic condition) and 400 (thermophilic condition) mg/L AMNSs groups, which were 65.4% and 43.3%, respectively, above the 0 mg/L AMNSs group. The fermentation pathway revealed that AMNSs enhanced the butyrate-type metabolic pathway and the corresponding nicotinamide adenine dinucleotides (NADHand NAD+) ratio, and hydrogenase activity was enhanced in mesophilic fermentation. The interaction of AMNSs and MCB suggested that AMNSs could assist in electron transfer and that the released metal elements might be responsible for elevated hydrogenase activity. AMNSs also promoted the evolution of the dominant microbial community and altered the content of extracellular polymers, leading to increased production of BioH2.In this work, effects of sulfomethylated lignins (SLs) prepared from masson pine (SLM) and poplar (SLP) on enzymatic hydrolysis and cellulase-lignin interaction were comparatively investigated. The results showed that both SLM and SLP significantly promoted the substrate enzymatic digestibility. The total sugar yield increased from 38.6% to 74.4% and ∼ 100%, respectively at 10 FPU/g-cellulose of cellulase dosage. The protein content in hydrolysate linearly increased with the addition of SL (0 - 1.6 g/g-substrate lignin), which suggested the competitive adsorption of cellulase may occur to substrate lignin and SLs. Further structural analysis of lignin revealed the high S/(V + H) ratio was directly related to the high enzymatic saccharification efficiency. The strong interaction between SL and cellulase decreased the nonproductive adsorption of cellulase onto substrate lignin and increased the accessibility of cellulase to carbohydrate, which was considered to be the key factor for the improvement of substrate enzymatic digestibility.Although tremendous works have been done on metal adsorption via biochar, mechanisms responsible for metal adsorption remain uncertain. This is the first work that provides direct evidence on the identification of Ni(II), Zn(II), and Cu(II) adsorption mechanisms on pineapple leaf biochar (PLB) using surface characteristics analyses, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FTIR), and scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscope (SEM-EDS). From Langmuir isotherm fitting, the maximum adsorption capacity of PLB for Ni(II), Zn(II), and Cu(II) are 44.88, 46.00, and 53.14 mg g-1, respectively, surpassing all biochars reported in the literature. Findings of surface characterization techniques coupled with cation released during adsorption, cation exchange, and surface complexation mechanisms were proposed. PLB is reusable and remains sufficient adsorption capacity even six consecutive cycles via pressure cooker regeneration. With high regenerability and ultrahigh adsorption capacity, PLB defines itself as a promising adsorbent for future applications in metal-laden wastewater.Herein, acidic concentrated lithium bromide-water system was efficiently carried out to synthesize levulinic acid (LA) from raw lignocellulose by two-step treatment. Saccharification was processed in 1st step, and 80.96 wt% glucose and 85.60 wt% xylose were yielded based on their theoretical yield from poplar at 110 °C for 20 min. The hydrolysate after solid residual lignin (SRL) separation was converted into LA and furfural by thermal treatment (130 °C) in the 2nd step, where 67.0 wt% LA and 48.0 wt% furfural were yielded. The SRL in 1st step, with high hydrophobicity and uniform dispersity, was used to prepare lignin nanoparticles (LNPs), which showed tailored size (100-200 nm diameters) and morphology in solid or hollow structure with single hole. Additionally, the residue in 2nd step was suggested as biochar. So far, this study offered a simple pathway for utilization of raw lignocellulose in water system, resulting in high yields of LA and LNPs.The objective of this study was to explore the changes in physicochemical properties and bacterial community during swine manure composting with a new compost tray (CT). The results showed that the organic matter (OM), moisture content (MC), and C/N decreased. The total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), P2O5, K2O and humic acids (HAs) contents of the compost increased. The properties of the final compost product comply with the requirements of regulation except for the moisture according to NY/T 525-2012. Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the major phyla during the composting. Genus Terrisporobacter played a key role in degrading organic (OM). The content of K2O was main factors driving the succession of bacterial communities. These findings shed some novel lights into the dynamic changes of physicochemical propertied and their impact on bacterial community in a composting process. The adsorptive removal of Cr(VI) and methylene blue (MB) was studied in a batch reactor using activated carbon (RAC), prepared from natural rubber waste, along with the commercial activated carbon (CAC). Maximum uptake of Cr(VI) and MB by the RAC was 21 and 30 mg g-1, respectively, whereas the corresponding uptake by CAC was 145 and 224 mg g-1. The kinetics of adsorption, however, was found to be faster in RAC than CAC. Both adsorbents were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, and FESEM-EDS. The predictability of various kinetic models, including the Weber-Morris model, was adversely affected by linearization. A multi-linear plot of adsorbed concentration versus square root of time failed to justify the multi-resistance hypothesis of mass transfer. Experimental kinetic data matched well with four surface reactions and an intraparticle diffusion model but showed substantial deviation from the numerical solution of another Fickian model incorporating mass balance and Langmuir isotherm.

This study aimed to (1) investigate the association of prognostic awareness with psychological (distress and emotional well-being) and spiritual well-being among patients with heart failure, and (2) assess the main and moderating effects of illness acceptance on the relationship between prognostic awareness and psychological (distress level and emotional well-being) and spiritual well-being.

This study used baseline data of a Singapore cohort of patients with heart failure (n=245) who had New York Heart Association class 3 or 4 symptoms. Patients reported their awareness of prognosis and extent of illness acceptance. Multivariable linear regressions were used to investigate the associations. Prognostic awareness was not significantly associated with psychological and spiritual well-being. Illness acceptance was associated with lower levels of distress [β (SE) = -0.9 (0.2); p<0.001], higher emotional well-being [β (SE) = 2.2 (0.4); p<0.001], and higher spiritual well-being [β (SE) = 5.4 (0.7); p<0.
