INTRODUCTION Worldwide, the gap between organ supply and demand has widened over the years. Malaysia has one of the lowest deceased organ donation rates. Success rate of organ or tissue procurement depends on not only the approach rate by health care providers but also the awareness among the public, whereby it can be a platform for family initiation of organ donation. The purpose of this study is to assess the knowledge of and determine the factors influencing attitude toward organ and tissue donation among patients in a primary clinic. METHODS A cross-sectional analytical study was carried out. Self-administered questionnaires were given to 400 patients who registered at an outpatient clinic in April 2018. Convenience sampling was applied. RESULTS Monthly income, education level, occupation, and knowledge level are significantly associated with attitude of the respondents toward organ and tissue donation. Occupation influenced attitude toward organ donation. Knowledge of organ donation and brain death both significantly affected attitude toward organ donation. CONCLUSION The greater the knowledge of organ donation and brain death, the more positive impression or attitude toward organ donation. Education level and income are the main predictors that influence attitude toward organ donation. Hence, it is important for public health units to promote and deliver public education on organ donation, change public misconceptions, and work parallel with hospitals to increase organ donation rates in Sabah. BACKGROUND Patient survival and quality of life is better after a kidney transplant compared with dialysis. In this retrospective study, we analyzed the results of pediatric kidney transplants in an 8-year period in our center. METHODS We reviewed the files of 166 children and adolescents who had undergone kidney transplants between 2008 and 2015 in our center. All the patients were younger than 18 years old and had been followed up for at least 2 years. RESULTS The transplanted kidneys were taken from live donors in 146 (88%) of the cases and from cadavers in 20 (12%) of the cases. They were procured from unrelated and related donors in 129 (90%) and 17 (10%) of the cases, respectively. Laparoscopic nephrectomy was done on 141 donors. The kidney vessels were anastomosed to the aorta, the common iliac, and the internal iliac in 3.6%, 56%, and 40.4% of cases, respectively. Preemptive kidney transplants were performed on 62 patients. The mean of patient survival was 124 ± 1.37 months. One- and five-year patient survival rates were 99% and 97%, respectively. The mean of graft survival was 118.29 ± 2.47 months. One- and five-year graft survival rates were 94% and 93%, respectively. Preemptive kidney transplants had a higher graft survival rate (P less then .02). CONCLUSION Kidney transplant is a safe and feasible procedure in children and adolescents based on patient and graft survival outcomes. In our center, surgery complications led to kidney loss in very few cases. AIM It has been reported that heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is upregulated during hepatocyte proliferation. Herein, we used a half-size liver transplantation (HSLT) model to study the impact of HO-1 on liver grafts proliferation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that HO-1 has been characterized as a regulator of liver graft regeneration. MATERIALS AND METHODS Saline and tin protoporphyrin (SnPP, a HO-1 competitive inhibitor) were separately administered in vehicle and SnPP group before rats HSLT. Plasma samples were collected at 0, 1, 3, and 5 days after HSLT for liver function analysis. Liver tissues were obtained at 0, 1, 3, and 5 days after HSLT for analyses of histologic, apoptosis, and proliferation index by immunohistochemical, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, and Western blotting. RESULTS HO-1 level was upregulated by the treatment of HSLT along with accelerated liver proliferation, which was reversed by SnPP. The reduced regeneration by SnPP lead to higher Suzuki's scores, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase levels. The interleukin-6 levels, p-Stat3/t-Stat3, c-myc, and c-jun were decreased in the SnPP group than the vehicle group. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that inhibition of HO-1 mitigates liver regeneration in part by downregulation of an interleukin-6/Stat3 axis. Targeted specific pharmacologic induction of HO-1 may be applicable in clinical practice. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Acute pancreatitis after renal transplantation is seldom seen yet a dreadful complication. The causes include traditional causes and immunosuppressive medications and viral infections. Classical symptoms are not always present at onset, causing delay in diagnosis. The available literature on pancreatitis in renal transplants is either as case reports or case series. Large studies with longer follow-up periods and outcome in renal transplant patients with pancreatitis are lacking. We conducted this retrospective study to analyze the incidence, clinical features, and causes of pancreatitis in our institute in post-azathioprine era. DESIGN We conducted a single center retrospective study of renal transplant recipients who suffered at least 1 episode of acute pancreatitis during a period from January 2002 to September 2018. We followed International Association of Pancreatology/American Pancreatic Association evidence-based guidelines for confirming diagnosis of acute pancreatitis and included only patients who fulfilled these criteria.
