ets in the Mexican Pacific.Marine animal tracking has become one of the major tools used to understand the behavior and ecology of a multitude of species in the ocean, thus there is an increasing body of knowledge about this subject worldwide, particularly for sharks. Nevertheless, little was known of the movement patterns of shark in the Mexican Pacific (MXP) and Gulf of California (GOC), except for the pioneering work carried out in the 1980s on the movements of scalloped hammerhead sharks in El Bajo Espiritu Santo and other islands in the region, as well as ongoing studies on white shark movements, migratory patterns and behavior off Isla Guadalupe. Here we present an overview of previous studies on the movements of sharks, as well as a comprehensive description of new studies currently being carried out by our research group at Pelagios Kakunjá on several species of sharks in the MXP. We show how information gleaned from these studies can be put to use to guide sustainable exploitation policies and promote effective conservation practices.Introduction Dysphonia in children is a common symptom, its prevalence varies between 6% and 23%. There is a broad differential diagnosis and the recommendation is to evaluate dysphonic children with an adequate laryngeal visualization method to achieve an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Objective To describe the experience in the diagnosis of dysphonia in children in the voice unit at Universidad Católica Clinical Hospital Santiago, Chile. Methods and materials A retrospective chart review was conducted of all new pediatric patients treated in the voice unit at Universidad Católica Clinical Hospital between 2012 and 2019. Demographic data, diagnosis, and in-office laryngoscopies were reviewed. All patients were evaluated by the same work team consisting of two Otolaryngologists specialized in vocal pathology and a speech voice therapist. Results A total of 126 new pediatric patients between the ages of 0 to 18 years were evaluated in the voice unit at Universidad Católica Clinical Hospital Santiago, Chile. The majority were males (54%) with an average age of 9 years. 40% of the diagnosis corresponded to vocal nodules, 26% to vocal cord cysts, the remaining to a group of less frequent diagnosis. Two different groups were studied, the first group evaluated during the years 2012-2015 with flexible fibre-optic laryngoscopy and rigid videolaryngostroboscopy (VLS); the second group evaluated between the years 2015-2019 with distal chip flexible videolaryngoscopy, distal chip flexible VLS and rigid VLS. In the second group, the diagnosis of vocal nodules decreased, and the diagnosis of vocal cord cysts increased in comparison to the first group. Conclusion Pediatric patients with dysphonia must be evaluated by a multidisciplinary team of experts and adequate equipment. VLS should be considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of vocal cord pathology in pediatric population. Background Singers are unique musicians because they use their whole body as a musical instrument. Posture and proprioception are key components for a robust and healthy voice. Objective This study aimed to analyze the postural control of lyric singers in different sensorimotor conditions. Methods Seventeen lyric singers were compared to a control group of 12 participants in static postural control test in eyes open (C1) and eyes closed (C2) conditions. Postural control of singers was also assessed in four specific singing conditions singing posture eyes open (C3) and eyes closed (C4), vocalization (C5) and free aria (C6), low values being representative of good postural control. Singers also completed the Singing Voice Handicap Index (SVHI) French version, low scores reflecting a good SVHI result. Results No significant difference was observed between the two groups in C1 and C2. Postural control of singers was more accurate in C3 than in C1. Increased values in all postural parameters were seen in the singing conditions. Scores obtained at the SVHI were correlated to the area covered by the center of foot pressure in C5, low scores at the SVHI being correlated with low area values in this postural condition. Conclusions Singing is a multitask situation which involves several movements including breathing, and management of factors such as stress. This can affect balance and so rigorous work on posture and proprioception is required as soon as a singer begins to perform in order to take care of the voice.Purpose Participation in sorority recruitment often results in acute vocal impairment. The purpose of this investigation was to characterize the extent to which voice function and laryngeal appearance may be altered by participation in this social phenomenon. Methods Using a within-participant repeated measures design, nine women participating as sorority recruiters completed the study protocol. The following data were collected at two time points, immediately before and after the completion of two weeks of sorority recruitment stroboscopic laryngeal imaging, vocal acoustic measures, and perceptual measures of vocal effort and voice quality. Results Perceived phonatory effort and overall severity of voice quality were significantly impaired following sorority recruitment. All participants had evidence of mucosal changes in the form of one or more the following observed edema, erythema, increased vascularity, glottic margin changes. No significant differences in acoustic measures were identified. Tretinoin research buy Conclusions Increased perceived vocal effort, increased overall severity ratings of voice quality, and deleterious vocal fold tissue changes observed support the hypothesis that the acute vocal loading that is characteristic of the sorority recruitment process contributes to a decline in voice function in the short term. Acoustic measures taken either lacked the sensitivity for the perceived decline in voice function or the participants, who were otherwise healthy, managed to adapt the acoustic signal to the tissue changes observed. The extent to which these acute changes may be mitigated with vocal hygiene and voice training is an area for future study.Ideally, an analysis method for laryngeal high-speed videoendoscopy (LHSV) based on the glottal area waveforms (GAW) requires images of a complete view of the glottis to ensure findings that are representatives of the vibratory behaviors of the whole vocal folds. However, in practice, the preferred images may not be obtained at all times. Often, the only available images that a clinician has to work with consist of a partial view of the glottis. This study aims to examine the effects of using images of a partial view of the glottis (ie, posterior-middle, anterior-middle, or middle) on the LHSV-based measures (ie, fundamental frequency (F0GAW), frequency perturbation (jitterGAW), amplitude perturbation (shimmerGAW), open quotient (OQGAW), and Nyquist plot). The participants consisted of 9 young normophonic females. The procedures involved LHSV recording of the vibration of the vocal folds. The images of the complete view of the glottis were analyzed to obtain the LHSV-based measures. The same images were used me conclusion could not be applied to the OQGAW and Nyquist plots of the images of the anterior-middle and middle views of the glottis. A possible effect of the presence or absence of a posterior glottal gap on the findings warrants further confirmation. The emergency department (ED) is responsible for managing a variety of acute illnesses including undifferentiated shock. A newer less recognized syndrome termed BRASH - bradycardia, renal failure, AV-node blockers, shock and hyperkalemia - is a cycle of synergy between hyperkalemia and AV-blockade that can result in shock. This entity is more common amongst the elderly, considering polypharmacy and co-morbid diseases. Some cases have an inciting trigger of hypovolemia. Anaphylaxis is a potentially lethal form of shock that most emergency physicians (EP) treat in the ED. The two entities have never occurred simultaneously. Herein, we report a case of anaphylaxis induced BRASH syndrome occurring in an elderly diabetic man. The EP should be aware of this unique presentation of BRASH. It was concluded that the patient's anaphylaxis, caused hypovolemia, coupled with polypharmacy, and physiological stress, precipitated this severe form of shock and multi-organ system failure.Influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) plays an important role in viral antigenicity, replication and host range. However, few amino acid positions in HA were reported to play multiple functions in both viral antigenicity and replication. In the present study, through analyzing the amino acid sequences of H9N2 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) isolated from China, we identified a multi-functional substitution of D200N in HA1 protein. Firstly, the substitution of D200N changed the antigenicity of H9N2 AIVs. Secondly, the D200N increased the HA cleavage efficiency and reduced acid and thermal stability of HA protein, which triggered viral-endosomal membrane fusion whereby promoted the release of viral genome into the host cytoplasm. Finally, residue 200-N increased the replication of H9N2 viruses in both chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) cells and chicken embryonated eggs. In summary, the D200N substitution is a newly identified antigenicity and replication determinant of H9N2 AIVs, which should be paid more attention during surveillance.Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) is the causative agent of infectious bursal disease (IBD), an important immunosuppressive disease seriously threatening poultry farming worldwide. Since the identification of the classic strain in 1957, variant IBDV, very virulent IBDV, and novel variant IBDV have successively emerged brought severe challenges. Over the years, attenuated, intermediate, and intermediate-plus live vaccines have been developed to control the disease. The coexistence of various strains in flocks increases the probability of homologous recombination, and in this study, a naturally occurring homologous recombination between a novel variant strain and an intermediate vaccine strain of IBDV was first identified. Sequence analyses demonstrated that the IBD16HeN01 strain was a recombinant IBDV incorporating the skeleton of the novel variant IBDV (SHG19-like strain), where the 3' region of segment A (nt 1539-3260) was replaced by an intermediate vaccine strain (W2512-like strain). Pathogenicity experiments indicated that IBD16HeN01 could cause severe bursal lesions and the recombination increased viral pathogenicity to chick embryos compared with the novel variant IBDV. Homologous recombination in IBDV has increased the complexity of disease prevention and control and reminds us that we should use live vaccines more scientifically and cautiously.Cholesterol-25-hydroxylase (CH25 H) is a reticulum-associated membrane protein induced by an important interferon-stimulating gene (ISG) and can significantly inhibit some virus replication. But the effect of CH25H on encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) is still not clear. In this study, we found that EMCV infection increases significantly the endogenous CH25H expression in BHK-21 and N2a cells. CH25H and cholesterol catalytic oxidation product 25-hydroxycholesterol (25HC) obviously inhibits EMCV infection by inhibiting the viral penetration. But the CH25H mutant lacking hydroxylase activity repairs the ability to inhibit the viral replication. Meanwhile, β-cyclodextrin crystalline as a cholesterol inhibitor significantly decreases the viral replication. In addition, CH25H can selectively interact and degrade the viral RNA-Dependent RNA Polymerase-3D protein by independent on the association of proteasome, lysosome and caspase manner. It provides new insights into the interplay mechanisms between CH25H and non-enveloped single-stranded positive RNA viruses.
