001). No statistical differences were found in proportion of low back injury history between specialized (25.6%) and non-specialized female figure skaters (24.0%, p = 0.836). Chronological age was also identified as an independent risk factor for low back injuries in female figure skaters (aOR 1.24, 95%CI 1.00, 1.54, p = 0.048). Conclusions The majority of female figure skaters in this cohort were specialized. An association between chronological age and low back injuries, found in the current study, may be a result of cumulative effects of participating in figure skating over time.Background The maxillary labial frenulum is an attachment that connects the upper lip to the gingival tissue, and when it is too closely attached to gingival margin due to inadequate plaque control, it may put gingival health at risk. Objective This study aimed to assess postoperative pain perception and wound healing after laser-assisted frenectomy in a pediatric population retrospectively. Methods This study is based on the clinical records of the patients who received laser-assisted frenectomy treatment due to mucogingival problems at the pediatric dentistry department. Twenty-two patients were treated with either 2780 nm Er,CrYSGG laser (Waterlase iPlus; Biolase Technology, Irvine, CA, USA) or 940 nm diode laser (Epic10; Biolase Technology). The analyzed data included age, gender, frenulum insertion type, type of dental laser, postoperative pain perception, and wound healing. Postoperative pain evaluation was performed using Wong-Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale after 3 h, 1 day, 1 week, and 2 weeks. Wound surface healing was assessed through photography. Images were uploaded to the software, and changes in the wound surface area were measured in square millimeters on the day of frenectomy and on postoperative first day, first week, and second week. Results Er,CrYSGG group had statistically significant better wound healing results after 1 and 2 weeks, respectively (p less then 0.05). No significant difference was found between 2780 nm Er,CrYSGG laser and 940 nm diode laser groups in terms of pain perception. Our hypothesis is that failure to eliminate bacterial or viral pathogens may result in persistent low-grade inflammation. In this study, we analyzed inflammatory mediators in middle ear fluids from 67 children with SOM. This was combined with determinations of viable bacteria by culture along with detection of bacterial and viral genetic material by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The inflammatory mediators found at the highest concentrations (>30 ng/mL) were stem cell growth factor-β (median 110 ng/mL), CXCL1, IL-16, IL-8, migration inhibitory factor, CXCL10, and CXCL9. Among bacterial pathogens, Moraxella catarrhalis and Haemophilus influenzae dominated, regardless of detection methods, while rhinovirus dominated among viral pathogens. IRF-3 polymorphisms were first determined by sequencing 25 asthmatic and 25 healthy children. For further analysis, 609 asthmatic children and 191 healthy controls were screened for the genetic variants, such as rs2304204, rs2304205, rs320440, rs34739574, and rs7251. In addition, the relationship between these polymorphisms and asthma-related phenotypic features, including forced expiratory volume in one second values, eosinophil counts, and IgE levels was determined. rs7251 was associated with asthma in the codominant (P = 0.049) and G dominant (P = 0.025) model, however this significance was lost after False Discovery Rate analysis. Other investigated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) showed no significant association with asthma or asthma-related phenotypes. Type I interferon (IFN-I) is a key component of host innate immune system responsible for eliminating the virus at the early stage of infection. In contrast, SARS-CoV-2 has evolved multiple strategies to evade innate immune response to facilitate viral replication, transmission, and pathogenesis. This review summarizes the recent progresses on SARS-CoV-2 proteins that antagonize host IFN-I production and/or signaling. These progresses have provided knowledge for new vaccine and antiviral development to prevent and control COVID-19.A previous report on 814 patients who were coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive provided preliminary therapeutic efficacy evidence with interferon-α2b (IFN-α2b) in Cuba, from March 11 to April 14, 2020. This study re-evaluates the effectiveness of IFN-α2b during the period from March 11 to June 17, 2020. Patients received a combination of oral antivirals (lopinavir/ritonavir and chloroquine) with intramuscular or subcutaneous administration of IFN-α2b. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients discharged from the hospital; the secondary endpoint was the case fatality rate, and several outcomes related to time variables were also evaluated. From March 11 to June 17, 2,295 patients had been confirmed to be severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) positive in Cuba, 2,165 were treated with Heberon® Alpha R, and 130 received the approved protocol without IFN. The proportion of fully recovered patients was higher in the IFN-treated compared with the non-IFN-treated group. Prior IFN treatment decreases the likelihood of intensive care and increases the survival after severe or critical diseases.
