By including water-soluble hydroxypropyl (HPBCD) and randomly methylated (RAMEB) β-cyclodextrin, we aimed to increase its biodisponibility and the effectiveness of the antifibrotic effects of chrysin at oral administration. Liver fibrosis in mice was induced in 7 weeks by CCl4 i.p. administration, and afterwards treated with 50 mg/kg of CHR-HPBCD, CHR-RAMEB, and free chrysin. CCl4 administration increased hepatic inflammation (which was augmented by the upregulation of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kB), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interleukin 6 (IL-6) and induced fibrosis, as determined using histopathology and electron microscopy. These results were also confirmed by the upregulation of Collagen I (Col I) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression, which led to extracellular fibrotic matrix proliferation. Moreover, the immunopositivity of alpha-smooth muscle actin (a-SMA) in the CCl4 group was evidence of hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation. The main profibrotic pathway was activated, as confirmed by an increase in the transforming growth factor- β1 (TGF-β1) and Smad 2/3 expression, while Smad 7 expression was decreased. Recent advances to understand the contribution and function of A. baumannii virulence factors in its pathogenesis have begun to elucidate how this bacterium interacts with immune cells and its interesting mechanisms for multi-antibiotic resistance. Taking advantage of the availability of the A. baumannii AB5075 transposon mutant library, we investigated the impact of the A. baumannii Clp genes, which encode for a chaperone-protease responsible for the degradation of misfolded proteins, on bacterial virulence in a model of pneumonia using C57BL/6 mice and survival within J774.16 macrophage-like cells. Clp-protease A. baumannii mutants exhibit decreased virulence in rodents, high phagocytic cell-mediated killing and reduced biofilm formation. Capsular staining showed evidence of encapsulation in A. baumannii AB5075 and Clp-mutant strains. Surprisingly, clpA and clpS mutants displayed irregular cell morphology, which may be important in the biofilm structural deficiencies observed in these strains. Interestingly, clpA showed apical-like growth, proliferation normally observed in filamentous fungi. These findings provide new information regarding A. baumannii pathogenesis and may be important for the development of therapies intended at reducing morbidity and mortality associated with this remarkable pathogen.Assuming that atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with left atrial remodeling and dysfunction, we hypothesize that left atrial and left atrial appendage ejection fractions (LAEF and LAAEF) are useful and may be more sensitive outcome predictors of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). Fifty patients who underwent PVI at our institution with available pre-interventional cardiac computed tomography (CT) for procedure planning were included in this retrospective study. The patients were separated into two groups by recurrence and non-recurrence of AF and subgroups of paroxysmal and persistent AF. Semiautomatic volumetric analysis of the left atrium was used to calculate morphological and functional parameters and optimal cut-offs were calculated using the Youden index. LAEF (accuracy 94%, sensitivity 67%) and LAAEF (accuracy 90%, sensitivity 67%) were significantly reduced in patients with AF recurrence (16% vs. 36%, p = 0.00002; 16% vs. 42%, p = 0.000002), and in the subgroup analysis, the functional parameters were independent from AF type (paroxysmal and persistent). With a cut-off of less then 23% for both LAEF and LAAEF (area under the curve (AUC) 0.94, 95%CI 0.84-0.99 and AUC 0.96, 95%CI 0.86-0.99, respectively), AF recurrence occurred in 77.8%, within a mean follow-up period of 229 days. In conclusion, left atrial function on prior cardiac CT offers useful parameters for predicting AF recurrence after PVI.Knowledge on compliance with governmental recommendations in combating the spread of COVID-19 in different groups is important to target efforts. This study investigated the adherence to the governmental implemented COVID-19 measures and its predictors in Danish university students, a not-at-risk group for COVID-19 mortality and normally characterized by many social contacts. As part of the COVID-19 International Student Wellbeing Study, a survey on socio-demographic situation, study information, living arrangements, lifestyle behaviors, stress, questions about COVID-19 infection and knowledge and concern about COVID-19 infection was sent via email to relevant university students in Denmark in May, 2020 (n = 2.945). Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was employed. Our results showed that around 60% of the students were not concerned about COVID-19, while 68% reported that they followed governmental measures.
