While research on female elephant sociality and communication is prevalent, until recently male elephants have been considered far less social than females. By analyzing the acoustic parameters of social rumbles recorded over 1.5 years from wild, mature, male African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) we expand current knowledge about the information encoded within these vocalizations and their potential to facilitate individual recognition. Ventricular tachycardia (VT) is a major cause of sudden cardiac death (SCD). Clinical investigations can sometimes fail to identify the underlying cause of VT and the event is classified as idiopathic (iVT). VT contributes significantly to the morbidity and mortality in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Since mutations in arrhythmia-associated genes frequently determine arrhythmia susceptibility screening for disease-predisposing variants could improve VT diagnostics and prevent SCD in patients.

Ninety-two patients diagnosed with coronary heart disease (CHD), DCM, or iVT were included in our study. We evaluated genetic profiles and variants in known cardiac risk genes by targeted next generation sequencing (NGS) using a newly designed custom panel of 96 genes. We hypothesized that shared morphological and phenotypical features among these subgroups may have an overlapping molecular base. We investigated factors related to survival of juvenile bighorn sheep in reestablished populations in the northern Basin and Range ecosystem, managed as the formerly-recognized California subspecies (hereafter, "California lineage"). We investigated whether survival probability of 4-month juveniles would vary by (1) presence of M. ovipneumoniae-infected or exposed individuals in populations, (2) population genetic diversity,f juvenile survival. Survival varied temporally but was not strongly influenced by population genetic diversity or nutrition, although genetic diversity within most study area populations was very low. We conclude that the presence of M. ovipneumoniae can cause extremely low juvenile survival probability in translocated bighorn populations of the California lineage, but found little influence that genetic diversity or nutrition affect juvenile survival. Yet, after the PCR+ adult female in one population died, subsequent observations found 11 of 14 ( 79%) collared adult females had surviving juveniles at 4-months, suggesting that targeted removals of infected adults should be evaluated as a management strategy.
