Our studies have demonstrated that the regolith, when mixed with super absorbent polymer (SAP), water, and binders exposed to Martian conditions, can form a solid block and retain more than 80% of the added water, which may be of interest to screen radiation while maintaining a low weight.
A new simplified method for the detention of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is proposed using two variables (anthropometric and minimally invasive).
A study of MetS prevalence was made on a sample of 361 older people. The anthropometric variables analyzed were blood pressure, body mass index, waist circumference (WC), waist-height ratio, body fat percentage, and waist-hip ratio. A crude and adjusted binary logistic regression was performed, and receiver operating characteristic curves were obtained for determining the predictive capacity of those variables. For the new detection method, decision trees were employed using automatic detection by interaction through Chi-square.
The prevalence of the MetS was of 43.7%. The final decision trees uses WC and basal glucose (BG), whose cutoff values were for men, WC ≥ 102.5 cm and BG > 98 mg/dL (sensitivity = 67.1%, specificity = 90.3%, positive predictive value = 85%, validity index = 79.9%); and for women, WC ≥ 92.5 cm and BG ≥ 97 mg/dL (sensitivity = 65.9%, specificity = 92.7%, positive predictive value = 87.1%, validity index = 81.3%). In older women the best predictive value of MetS was a WC of 92.5 cm.
It is possible to make a simplified diagnosis of MetS in older people using the WC and basal capillary glucose, with a high diagnostic accuracy and whose use could be recommended in the resource-poor health areas. A new cutting point in older women for the WC should be valued.

Our previous results demonstrate a key role for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and MSK1 kinase in experience-related homeostatic synaptic scaling. Astroglia has been recently shown to release BDNF via a calcium-dependent mechanism. To elucidate a role for astroglia-derived BDNF in homeostatic synaptic plasticity in the aging brain, we explored the experience- and diet-related alterations of synaptic transmission and plasticity in transgenic mice with impairment of the BDNF/MSK1 pathway (MSK1 kinase dead knock-in mice, MSK1 KD) and impairment of glial exocytosis (dnSNARE mice). We found that prolonged tonic activation of astrocytes caused BDNF-dependent increase in the efficacy of excitatory synapses accompanied by enlargement of synaptic boutons. We also observed that exposure to environmental enrichment (EE) and caloric restriction (CR) enhanced the Ca2+ signalling in cortical astrocytes and strongly up-regulated the excitatory and down-regulated inhibitory synaptic currents in old wild-type mice, thus counterbalancing the impact of ageing on astroglial and synaptic signalling. The EE- and CR-induced up-scaling of excitatory synaptic transmission in neocortex was accompanied by the enhancement of long-term synaptic potentiation. Importantly, effects of EE and CR on synaptic transmission and plasticity was significantly reduced in the MSK1 KD and dnSNARE mice. Combined, our results suggest that astroglial release of BDNF is important for the homeostatic regulation of cortical synapses and beneficial effects of EE and CR on synaptic transmission and plasticity in aging brain.Vermeersiekte or "vomiting disease" is an economically important disease of ruminants following ingestion of Geigeria (G.) species in South Africa. Sheep are more susceptible, and poisoning is characterized by stiffness, regurgitation, bloat, paresis, and paralysis. Various sesquiterpene lactones have been implicated as the cause of poisoning. The in vitro cytotoxicity of two sesquiterpene lactones, namely, ivalin (purified from Geigeria aspera) and parthenolide (a commercially available sesquiterpene lactone), were compared using mouse skeletal myoblast (C2C12) and rat embryonic cardiac myocyte (H9c2) cell lines, representing the oesophageal, skeletal and cardiac muscles, which are affected in sheep. For 24, 48, and 72 h, both cell lines were exposed. A colorimetric viability assay, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), was used to assess cytotoxicity. A concentration-dependent cytotoxic response was observed in both cell lines, however, the C2C12 cells were more sensitive, with the half-maximal effective concentrations (EC50s) ranging between 2.7 and 3.3 µM. In addition, the effect that ivalin and parthenolide has on desmin, an important cytoskeletal intermediate filament in myocytes, was evaluated using the C2C12 myoblasts. Disorganization and aggregation of desmin were caused by both sesquiterpene lactones, which could clarify some of the ultrastructural lesions described in vermeersiekte.Animals have stone disease too. However, the breeding costs and body size are too high. The most-used genetic study animal for stone disease was the mouse, but it was high-cost. Calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals can also be light microscopically observed in the Malphigian tubules of Drosophila melanogaster, induced by adding EG to the food. Genetic studies of flies can be done by cross-breeding, and this has a lower cost than using mice. The fly model also has several advantages, including minimal breeding equipment, the fact that it is easier to reach larger numbers in a short time with flies, that crystals can be observed under microscopy, and that they allow genetic study.
