The methylketone and methyloxycarbonyl selenoesters were the more effective antibacterials compared to cyano selenoesters. The methyloxycarbonyl selenoesters (Se-E2 and Se-E3) showed significant biofilm and efflux pump inhibition, and a methyloxycarbonyl selenoester (Se-E1) exerted strong QS inhibiting effect. Based on results selenoesters could be promising compounds to overcome bacterial MDR.3d transition metals-catalyzed C-H bond functionalizations represent nowadays an important tool in organic synthesis, appearing as the most promising alternative to cross-coupling reactions. Among 3d transition metals, iron found widespread application due to its availability and benign nature, and it was established as an efficient catalyst in organic synthesis. In this context, the use of ortho-orientating directing groups (DGs) turned out to be necessary for promoting selective iron-catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions. Very recently, triazoles DGs were demonstrated to be more than an excellent alternative to the commonly employed 8-aminoquinoline (AQ) DG, as a result of their modular synthesis as well as the mild reaction conditions applied for their removal. In addition, their tunable geometry and electronics allowed for new unprecedented reactivities in iron-catalyzed C-H activation methodologies that will be summarized within this review.Dark chocolate samples were previously classified into four sensory categories. The classification was modelled based on volatile compounds analyzed by direct introduction mass spectrometry of the chocolates' headspace. The purpose of the study was to identify the most discriminant odor-active compounds that should characterize the four sensory categories. To address the problem, a gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) study was conducted by 12 assessors using a comparative detection frequency analysis (cDFA) approach on 12 exemplary samples. Thiazovivin A nasal impact frequency (NIF) difference threshold combined with a statistical approach (Khi² test on k proportions) revealed 38 discriminative key odorants able to differentiate the samples and to characterize the sensory categories. A heatmap emphasized the 19 most discriminant key odorants, among which heterocyclic molecules (furanones, pyranones, lactones, one pyrrole, and one pyrazine) played a prominent role with secondary alcohols, acids, and esters. The initial sensory classes were retrieved using the discriminant key volatiles in a correspondence analysis (CA) and a hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). Among the 38 discriminant key odorants, although previously identified in cocoa products, 21 were formally described for the first time as key aroma compounds of dark chocolate. Moreover, 13 key odorants were described for the first time in a cocoa product.Unhealthy diet is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Therefore, this umbrella review aims to comprehensively review the effects of dietary factors, including dietary patterns, food groups, and nutrients on CVD risks. Medline and Scopus databases were searched through March 2020. Systematic reviews with meta-analyses (SRMA) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or observational studies measuring the effects of dietary factors on CVD risks were eligible. Fifty-four SRMAs, including 35 SRMAs of observational studies, 10 SRMAs of RCTs, and 9 SRMAs of combined RCT and observational studies, were included for review. Findings from the SRMAs of RCTs suggest the significant benefit of Mediterranean and high-quality diets for lowering CVD risk, with pooled risk ratios (RRs) ranging from 0.55 (95%CI 0.39-0.76) to 0.64 (95%CI 0.53-0.79) and 0.70 (95%CI 0.57-0.87), respectively. For food nutrients, two SRMAs of RCTs found that high intake of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) significantly reduced CVD risks, with pooled RRs ranging from 0.89 (95%CI 0.82, 0.98) to 0.90 (95%CI 0.85-0.96), while evidence of efficacy of n-6 PUFA and combined n-3 and n-6 PUFA were inconsistent. Moreover, results from the SRMAs of RCTs did not find a significant benefit of a low-salt diet and low total fat intake for CVD prevention. For food groups, results from the SRMAs of cohort studies suggest that high intakes of legumes, nuts, and chocolate, as well as a vegetarian diet significantly reduced the risk of coronary heart disease, with pooled RRs of 0.90 (95%CI 0.84-0.97), 0.68 (95%CI 0.59-0.78), 0.90 (95%CI 0.82-0.97), and 0.71 (95%CI 0.57-0.87), respectively. Healthy dietary patterns had a significant benefit for CVD prevention. With the substitutional and synergistic interactions between different food groups and nutrients, dietary recommendations for CVD prevention should be focused more on healthy dietary patterns than single food groups or nutrients.Carbohydrate-active enzymes are responsible for both the biosynthesis and breakdown of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates [...].The synergistic anticancer effect of gemcitabine (GEM) and resveratrol (RSVL) has been noted in certain cancer types. However, whether the same phenomenon would occur in lung cancer is unclear. Here, we uncovered the molecular mechanism by which RSVL enhances the anticancer effect of GEM against lung cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. We established human lung adenocarcinoma HCC827 xenografts in nude mice and treated them with GEM and RSVL to detect their synergistic effect in vivo. Tumor tissue sections from nude mice were subjected to hematoxylin and eosin staining for blood vessel morphological observation, and immunohistochemistry was conducted to detect CD31-positive staining blood vessels. We also established the HCC827-human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) co-culture model to observe the tubule network formation. Human angiogenesis antibody array was used to screen the angiogenesis-related proteins in RSVL-treated HCC827. RSVL suppressed the expression of endoglin (ENG) and increased tumor microvessel growth and blood perfusion into tumor. Co-treatment of RSVL and GEM led to more tumor growth suppression than treatment of GEM alone. Mechanistically, using the HCC827-HUVEC co-culture model, we showed that RSVL-suppressed ENG expression was accompanied with augmented levels of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2 and increased tubule network formation, which may explain why RSVL promoted tumor microvessel growth in vivo. RSVL promoted tumor microvessel growth via ENG and ERK and enhanced the anticancer efficacy of GEM. Our results suggest that intake of RSVL may be beneficial during lung cancer chemotherapy.
