The factors that adversely affect the quality of nursing care and ethical sensitivity should be examined and attempts should be made to improve the working environment.Objective The study examines how wildfire smoke exposure may impact health and safety in the agricultural workplace.Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with agricultural employers and focus group discussions were held with farmworkers in three regions of California.Results Agricultural employers had varying knowledge about and experience responding to poor air quality due to wildfire smoke. Respirators or masks were not mentioned as a potential protective measure when describing their safety practices. Farmworkers reported experiencing poor air quality due to wildfire smoke, although knowledge of safety precautions varied. Farmworkers reported employer and supervisors' attitudes toward safety as having the greatest impact on the implementation of workplace safety measures.Conclusion Adapting health promotion and workplace safety strategies to meet the multiple vulnerabilities and diverse needs of farmworkers is critical to successful implementation of workplace protection and safety measures. Given limited familiarity with the topic, wildfire smoke exposure resources are needed to assist employers and supervisors in their compliance with a new wildfire smoke safety regulation in California. According to specific Brazilian legislation, since 2004 construction and demolition waste can no longer be disposed of in open dumps, municipal solid waste landfills, slopes, waterways and environmental protected areas. Construction and demolition waste should preferably be recycled, but just a small amount of it returns to the construction industry production chain in Brazil. This work aims both to present diagnoses of the construction and demolition waste management in Brazil, the European Union and the United States and to compare their results. It is concluded that Brazil presents performance indicators in relation to construction and demolition waste management well below those found for the other analysed countries. Furthermore, differences and similarities are identified and potentials for improvement in the current situation of construction and demolition waste in Brazil are discussed.The fungal pathogen Fusarium graminearum causes Fusarium head blight (FHB) on wheat, barley and other grains. FHB results in yield reductions and contaminates grain with trichothecene mycotoxins, which threaten food safety and food security. Innovative mechanisms for controlling FHB are urgently needed. We have previously shown that transgenic tobacco and citrus plants expressing a modified thionin (Mthionin) exhibited enhanced resistance toward several bacterial pathogens. The aim of this study was to investigate whether overexpression of Mthionin could be similarly efficacious against F. graminearum, and whether transgenic expression of Mthionin impacts the plant microbiome. Transgenic Arabidopsis plants expressing Mthionin were generated and confirmed. When challenged with F. graminearum, Mthionin-expressing plants showed less disease and fungal biomass in both leaves and inflorescences, compared to control plants. When infiltrated into leaves, macroconidia of F. graminearum germinated at lower rates and produced less hyphal growth in Arabidopsis leaves expressing Mthionin. Moreover, marker genes related to defense signaling pathways were expressed at significantly higher levels after F. graminearum infection in Mthionin transgenic Arabidopsis plants. However, Mthionin expression did not appreciably alter the overall microbiome associated with transgenic plants grown under controlled conditions; across leaves and roots of Mthionin-expressing and control transgenic plants, only a few bacterial and fungal taxa differed, and differences between Mthionin transformants were of similar magnitude as differences compared to control plants. In sum, our data indicate that Mthionin is a promising candidate to produce transgenic crops for reducing FHB severity and ultimately mycotoxin contamination.Objective The Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT) and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale Letter Number Sequencing subtest (LNS) are two commonly used measures of working memory. Demographic variables (age, education, ethnicity, etc.) can impact performance on these measures, underscoring the need for demographically adjusted norms. We aimed to develop normative data for the PASAT and LNS for Spanish-speaking adults living in the U.S.-Mexico border region as part of a larger normative effort.Method Participants were native Spanish-speakers from the Neuropsychological Norms for the U.S. TPCA-1 Mexico Border Region in Spanish (NP-NUMBRS) project. Two hundred and forty-nine participants completed the PASAT and 202 participants completed LNS. Ages ranged from 19 to 60 and education from 0 to 20 years.Results Older age was associated with lower scores on LNS (p less then .01) but not PASAT. Lower education was associated with lower scores on both tests (ps less then .001). Women obtained lower raw scores than men on PASAT (ps less then .003), and there were no significant main effects of gender on LNS raw scores. Raw-to-scaled score conversions were calculated, and fractional polynomial equations were developed to calculate demographically-adjusted T-scores accounting for age, education, and gender. Published norms for English-speaking non-Hispanic Whites substantially overestimated rates of impairment (defined as T-score less then 40) on both the PASAT and LNS.Conclusions The use of the population-specific normative data may improve detection of working memory dysfunction in U.S. Spanish-speaking adults and contribute to improved diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning in this population. Whether the norms generalize to U.S. Spanish-speakers from other countries remains to be determined.
