Literature shows that mental healthcare workers in Ghana face incessant fear of patient violence that compromise safe care delivery. However, the nature, scale, perceived causes, and consequences of these assaults and how they shape risk perceptions have received limited empirical attention, hence the need for this study. The study employed sequential explanatory mixed methods where questionnaire administration preceded and informed the design of an interview guide used for in-depth interviews with health workers in referral psychiatric hospitals. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regressions were used to analyze the quantitative data. Qualitative data were transcribed and analyzed thematically. Findings showed that physical and non-physical violent assaults and risk perceptions of the hospitals were statistically and significantly associated with females (P less then 0.01), nurses (P less then 0.01), other clinical cadre (P less then 0.01), and those with low job tenure (P less then 0.05). About 57% and 71% of the sample reported experiencing physical and non-physical assaults, respectively. Major and minor injuries and psychosocial problems were frequent sequelae following physical violent assaults. As a result, 80% of the participants perceived the hospitals environment to be unsafe to provide care. Among the multiple complex pathophysiological mechanisms underlying COVID-19 pneumonia, immunothrombosis has been shown to play a key role. One of the most dangerous consequences of the prothrombotic imbalance is the increased incidence of micro- and macrothrombotic phenomena, especially deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).

We investigated the correlation between radiological and clinical-biochemical characteristics in a cohort of hospitalised COVID-19 patients.

PE was confirmed in 14/61 (23%) patients, five (35.7%) had DVT. The radiographic findings, quantified by Qanadli score calculated on CT angiography, correlated with the clinical score and biochemical markers. The ratio between the right and left ventricle diameter measured at CT angiography correlated with the length of hospital stay.

We aimed to evaluate the utility of plain X-ray radiograph (PXR) findings in suggesting a diagnosis of acute leukemia in children presenting with bone pain in the emergency department (ED) of a children's hospital.

Using our radiology reporting system and registered data for childhood acute leukemia, we collected data regarding patients who underwent musculoskeletal PXR examinations in the ED because of bone pain in their extremities from March 1, 2002 to June 30, 2015. We retrospectively reviewed their PXR findings and clinical information from the electronic medical records.

A total of 1331 patients underwent PXR examinations and 12 among them had suspected acute leukemia from PXR findings. From the registered data, we found 12 acute leukemia patients who underwent emergency extremity PXR. Ten patients were finally confirmed to have acute leukemia by bone marrow examinations. The most common finding was lucent metaphyseal bands demonstrated in seven cases, whereas six patients did not show any abnormalities in their peripheral blood cell counts. Sensitivity and specificity values of PXR for acute leukemia diagnosis were 90.0% and 99.8%, respectively. Positive predictive value and negative predictive values were 75.0% and 99.9%.

PXR is a useful diagnostic tool to detect possible acute leukemia in patients presenting with bone pain earlier than abnormalities of their peripheral blood cell counts. Previous work showed that Bacillus subtilis dormant spore killing and germination by dodecylamine take place by different mechanisms. This new work aimed to optimize killing of B. subtilis and other Firmicutes spores and to determine the mechanism of the killing.

Spores of seven Firmicute species were killed rapidly by dodecylamine under optimal conditions and more slowly by decylamine or tetradecylamine. Glutathione order The killed spores were not recovered by additions to recovery media, and some of the killed spores subsequently germinated, all indicating that dodecylamine-killed spores truly are dead. Spores of two species treated with dodecylamine were more sensitive to killing by a subsequent heat treatment, and spore killing of at least one species was faster with chemically decoated spores. The cores of dodecylamine-killed spores were stained by the nucleic acid stain propidium iodide, and dodecylamine-killed wild-type and germination-deficient spores released their stores of phosphate-containing small molecules.

This work indicates that dodecylamine is likely a universal sporicide for Firmicute species, and it kills spores by damaging their inner membrane, with attendant loss of this membrane as a permeability barrier.
