Multinational flight attendants have brought many positive results; conversely, discrimination has led to negative phenomena such as racism. Nevertheless, research focusing on global airline racism in tourism studies is unprecedented. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a modern racism scale rating the discrimination perceived by Asian female flight attendants on global airlines. It was developed following Churchill's eight steps (1979). This study derived measurement items through a literature review, in-depth interviews, first and second expert surveys, and a preliminary survey. These items were developed on a scale through a validity and reliability assessment and were finally confirmed as six dimensions and 24 measurement items. Lastly, research implications were discussed.Vulvar varicosities in nonpregnant females, either isolated or as a part of the pelvic congestion syndrome, are rare. We present a case of an adolescent girl with morbid obesity with bilateral bluish protrusions on the labia minora, as an incidental finding, that coincided with her excessive weight gain. The adolescent underwent thorough clinical examination, doppler ultrasound, contrast venography and varicography, and magnetic resonance angiography to rule out alternative diagnoses. Imaging results confirmed the presence of large venous lakes. selleck chemical Venous drainage to the internal iliac vein and connections with the long saphenous vein were delineated. Incompetence, dilatation, or reflux of ovarian or internal iliac veins, or their main tributaries, were not noted. Since the adolescent was asymptomatic and other pathologies, such as vascular malformations or hemangiomas were excluded, she was managed conservatively with counseling about lifestyle modification and weight reduction. This is only the third reported case of vulvar venous varicosities in adolescents. Female sex, along with obesity, are known risk factors for varicose vein formation; however, the pathogenesis is not fully understood. Additional research is needed to elucidate the role of excess adipose tissue in the pathophysiology of vulvar varicose veins and to optimize diagnostic workup and management in adolescence. The use of cisplatin is severely limited by its toxic side-effects, which has spurred chemists to employ different strategies in the development of new metal-based anticancer agents. Here, three novel dehydroabietyl piperazine dithiocarbamate ruthenium (II) polypyridyl complexes (6a-6c) were synthesized as antitumor agents. Compounds 6a and 6c exhibited better in vitro antiproliferative activity against seven tumor cell lines than cisplatin, they displayed no evident resistance in the cisplatin-resistant cell line A549/DPP. Importantly, 6a effectively inhibited tumor growth in the T-24 xenograft mouse model in comparison with cisplatin. Gel electrophoresis assay indicated that DNA was the potential targets of 6a and 6c, and the upregulation of p-H2AX confirmed this result. Cell cycle arrest studies demonstrated that 6a and 6c arrested the cell cycle at G1 phase, accompanied by the upregulation of the expression levels of the antioncogene p27 and the down-regulation of the expression levels of cyclin E. In addition, 6a and 6c caused the apoptosis of tumor cells along with the upregulation of the expression of Bax, caspase-9, cytochrome c, intracellular Ca2+ release, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and the downregulation of Bcl-2. These mechanistic study results suggested that 6a and 6c exerted their antitumor activity by inducing DNA damage, and consequently causing G1 stage arrest and the induction of apoptosis.Retroviruses belong to an important and diverse family of RNA viruses capable of causing neoplastic disease in their hosts. Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) is a gammaretrovirus that infects domestic and wild cats, causing immunodeficiency, cytopenia and neoplasia in progressively infected cats. The outcome of FeLV infection is influenced by the host immune response; progressively infected cats demonstrate weaker immune responses compared to regressively infected cats. In this study, humoral immune responses were examined in 180 samples collected from 123 domestic cats that had been naturally exposed to FeLV, using a novel ELISA to measure antibodies recognizing the FeLV surface unit (SU) glycoprotein in plasma samples. A correlation was demonstrated between the strength of the humoral immune response to the SU protein and the outcome of exposure. Cats with regressive infection demonstrated higher antibody responses to the SU protein compared to cats belonging to other outcome groups, and samples from cats with regressive infection contained virus neutralising antibodies. These results demonstrate that an ELISA that assesses the humoral response to FeLV SU complements the use of viral diagnostic tests to define the outcome of exposure to FeLV. Together these tests could allow the rapid identification of regressively infected cats that are unlikely to develop FeLV-related disease.Anesthesiology is a medical specialty that provides perioperative care for patients undergoing medical interventions requiring sedation or critical monitoring including surgery, imaging, and other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures [...].Influenza poses a serious health threat and creates an economic burden for people around the world. The accurate diagnosis of influenza is critical to the timely clinical treatment of patients and the control of outbreaks to protect public health. Commercially available rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDTs) that are operated by visual readout are widely used in clinics to screen influenza infections, but RIDTs suffer from imperfect analytical sensitivity, especially when the virus concentration in the sample is low. Fortunately, the sensitivity can be simply improved through an add-on signal amplification step, i.e., thermal contrast amplification (TCA). To demonstrate the advantage of TCA for influenza diagnosis, we conducted a prospective cohort study on 345 clinical specimens collected for influenza A and B testing during the 2017-2018 influenza season. All samples were tested using the Quidel QuickVue Influenza A + B test, followed by a TCA readout, and then confirmatory polymerase chain reaction testing.
