Dental healthcare students at the Peninsula Dental School, University of Plymouth, UK undertake community engagement projects as a core part of their undergraduate curriculum. Students work with their peers to develop a student-led, evidence-based project working with target groups in the local community to address oral health needs. The aim of the programme is to further the students' understanding of health inequalities and the health needs of different groups in the community, while developing skills that will help them deliver holistic dental care as part of their future professional practice. This report highlights our model of education delivery in collaboration with the community, the student-learning outcomes and discusses some of the benefits of this approach including examples of projects that have benefitted the community. We highlight the further work needed to evaluate the longer-term impacts on students of undertaking social accountability programmes. This paper draws on anthropological research exploring women's changing sexuality within an urban context of Tanzania. The women involved were participating in an HIV prevention trial and worked in bars, restaurants, hotels and nightclubs, or sold local beer or food in Mwanza city. In ethnographic fieldwork and interviews and group discussions with women, narratives about sexuality focused on gendered and moral discourses of sexuality, the commodification of sexuality, and emotions and intimacy in relationships. This paper discusses how women's sexual subjectivies are shaped by a city where social, structural and economic changes over an era of neoliberalism and AIDS has created both disciplinary and liberalising spaces in which gendered and moral discourses of sexuality have emerged.
Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and intraperitoneal chemotherapy are effective in the treatment of ovarian peritoneal carcinomatosis (OPC). Colon resection is often required to achieve maximal cytoreduction during CRS. The success of complete mesocolic excision (CME) and total mesorectal excision (TME) in the surgical treatment of primary colorectal tumors is well-known. Our study aimed to investigate the factors affecting mesocolic lymph node metastasis (MLNM) and the contribution of CME/TME techniques to maximal cytoreduction in patients diagnosed with ovarian peritoneal carcinomatosis (OPC) with colon metastasis.
Between 2004-2020, 30 patients who underwent colorectal resection with CME/TME techniques due to OPC-related colon metastasis were retrospectively analyzed.
The median age of patients was 61 (33-86). Six (20%) patients underwent total colectomy, 7 (23%) subtotal colectomy, 6 (20%) right hemicolectomy, 4 (13%) left hemicolectomy, and 7 (23%) rectosigmoid resection. Histopathological diagnosis wasts with PALNM, the frequency of MLNM increases. We believe that if colon resection is to be performed in OPC, a colectomy should be performed by CME/TME principles to achieve maximal cytoreduction.A new series of quinoline derivatives has been designed and synthesized as probable protease inhibitors (PIs) against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. In silico studies using DS v20.1.0.19295 software have shown that these compounds behaved as PIs while interacting at the allosteric site of target Mpro enzyme (6LU7). The designed compounds have shown promising docking results, which revealed that all compounds formed hydrogen bonds with His41, His164, Glu166, Tyr54, Asp187, and showed π-interaction with His41, the highly conserved amino acids in the target protein. Toxicity Prediction by Komputer Assisted Technology results confirmed that the compounds were found to be less toxic than the reference drug. Further, molecular dynamics simulations were performed on compound 5 and remdesivir with protease enzyme. Analysis of conformational stability, residue flexibility, compactness, hydrogen bonding, solvent accessible surface area (SASA), and binding free energy revealed comparable stability of ped quinoline derivatives.Molecular dynamics studies indicated the formation of stable ligand-Mpro complexes. There is a growing need for healthcare professionals to discuss fertility preservation options with trans and non-binary people before commencing medical transition as part of informed consent-based models of care. In this article, we adapt the Five-A framework of healthcare access to examine fertility preservation information and services. To do so, we present an analysis of data from Counting Ourselves, the first comprehensive national survey in Aotearoa New Zealand of trans and non-binary people's health and the first study exploring their access to cryopreservation information and services. Autophagy inhibitor order Among 419 participants who had received gender-affirming hormones or surgery, 33.7% received information about options for fertility preservation and 15.8% accessed fertility preservation services. Findings from the study indicate the need for greater understanding of trans and non-binary people's desire for genetically related children, and what type of information and form of delivery would be most helpful to ensure equitable outcomes in relation to decision-making around fertility and future family-building.
Depression and problem drinking are comorbid in emerging adulthood, yet the processes that link them are not well understood. Research has argued that shame has a unique influence on the experience of problematic drinking, but this has rarely been assessed at the state level. Using ecological momentary assessments (EMAs), we assessed whether shame, and not guilt, mediated the association between baseline depression and alcohol use and problems.
One hundred and eighty-four emerging adults (
= 19.27) completed a 12-day EMA study. Multilevel models were used to test hypotheses.
In a model with alcohol use as the outcome, there were no significant associations between shame or guilt and alcohol use at the within- or between-subjects level. In a model with alcohol problems as the outcome, guilt was positively associated with alcohol problems but only at the daily level. At the between-subjects level and after controlling for guilt, there was a significant association between depression, shame, and alcohol problems; average levels of shame mediated the association between depression and alcohol problems.
