Recent studies have shown subtle structural differences between Eag1 and HERG channels with profound functional impact. Thus, although both targets' structure is likely too similar to identify leads that exclusively bind to one of the channels, the structural information combined with the new knowledge of the functional relevance of particular residues or areas suggests the possibility of selective targeting of Eag1 in cancer therapies. The central nervous system (CNS) is particularly sensitive to EMF stimuli. Studies have explored the direct effect of different EMFs on the electrical properties of neurons in the last two decades, particularly focusing on the role of voltage-gated ion channels (VGCs). This work aims to systematically review published evidence in the last two decades detailing the effects of EMFs on neuronal ion channels as per the PRISM guidelines. Following a predetermined exclusion and inclusion criteria, 22 papers were included after searches on three online databases. Changes in calcium homeostasis, attributable to the voltage-gated calcium channels, were found to be the most commonly reported result of EMF exposure. EMF effects on the neuronal landscape appear to be diverse and greatly dependent on parameters, such as the field's frequency, exposure time, and intrinsic properties of the irradiated tissue, such as the expression of VGCs. Here, we systematically clarify how neuronal ion channels are particularly affected and differentially modulated by EMFs at multiple levels, such as gating dynamics, ion conductance, concentration in the membrane, and gene and protein expression. Ion channels represent a major transducer for EMF-related effects on the CNS.While decades of research have investigated and technically improved brain-computer interface (BCI)-controlled applications, relatively little is known about the psychological aspects of brain-computer interfacing. In 35 healthy students, we investigated whether extrinsic motivation manipulated via monetary reward and emotional state manipulated via video and music would influence behavioral and psychophysiological measures of performance with a sensorimotor rhythm (SMR)-based BCI. We found increased task-related brain activity in extrinsically motivated (rewarded) as compared with nonmotivated participants but no clear effect of emotional state manipulation. Our experiment investigated the short-term effect of motivation and emotion manipulation in a group of young healthy subjects, and thus, the significance for patients in the locked-in state, who may be in need of a BCI, remains to be investigated.Clinical studies in preterm neonates are rarely performed due to ethical concerns and difficulties associated with trials and recruitment. Consequently, dose selection in this population is primarily empirical. Scaling neonatal doses from adult doses does not account for developmental changes and may not accurately predict drug kinetics. This is especially important for gentamicin, a narrow therapeutic index aminoglycoside antibiotic. While gentamicin's bactericidal effect is associated with its peak plasma concentration, keeping trough concentrations below 1 µg/mL prevents toxicity and also helps to counteract adaptive resistance in bacteria such as Escherichia coli. In this study, physiologically based pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PBPK-PD) modeling was used to support and/or guide dosing decisions and to predict the antibacterial effect in preterm neonates. A gentamicin PBPK model was successfully verified in healthy adults and preterm neonates across all gestational ages. Clinical data from a neonatal intensive care unit at NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island was used to identify dosing regimens associated with increased incidence of elevated gentamicin trough concentrations in different preterm patient cohorts. Model predictions demonstrated that a higher dose with an extended-dosing interval (every 36 hours) in neonates with a postmenstrual age of 30 to 34 weeks and ≥35 weeks, with postnatal age 8 to 28 days and 0 to 7 days, respectively, were more likely to have a trough less then 1 µg/mL when compared with once-daily (every 24 hours) dosing. Facial functional restoration is one of the main goals in face transplantation. We report the oromyofacial function outcomes of two bimaxillary face transplantation (FT) patients in Helsinki.

Outcome Study.

Two male patients, aged 34 and 59, had severe functional facial disabilities following self-inflicted gunshot injuries sustained to their mid and lower faces several years earlier. Both underwent tooth-bearing maxillomandibular face transplantation in 2016 and 2018. We collected data regarding speech, swallowing, sensory recovery, motor recovery, and olfaction prior to transplantation. Patient charts were reviewed from the follow-up period of 4 and 2 years, respectively.

Speech intelligibility, acceptability, and articulation continued to improve during follow-up for both patients. Voice quality and resonance were mainly normal at last follow-up. Swallowing improved once lip occlusion was regained, with only minor aspiration evident on videofluorography. Both patients had significant improvement in facial mimic muscle function after FT. The first patient who only had buccal sensory nerves connected has only recovered protective facial sensation, whereas our second patient with buccal, infraorbital, and alveolar nerves connected has almost complete facial two-point discrimination.

Both patients have regained satisfactory facial sensory and motor function. Sensory recovery seems to be faster and more precise if multiple sensory nerve coaptations are performed. Swallowing and speech have continued to improve over time although not reaching the level of the normal population. We demonstrate how speech-corrective surgery can safely be performed in a FT patient and can improve speech recovery.
