The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of LSO and ADIM on postural control during two balance tasks and determine their reliability. Methods Twenty participants (50% men) randomly performed three experimental conditions 1) without lumbar stabilization, 2) with LSO), and 3) with ADIM. Each experimental condition was tested in two postural tasks semi-tandem and one-legged stance on a force platform for 30 seconds, while the Center of pressure postural (COP) parameters were computed. Results The two methods of lumbar stabilization were comparable and did not significantly reduce the COP values across time, even though a few individuals presented a change in their COP data above the levels of measurement errors. The reliability of these measurements was generally acceptable and sometimes excellent ( ≥ 0.90 and ≤10% error measurement). Conclusions Both LSO and isolated contraction of the transversus abdominis muscle by ADIM do not change postural control in one-legged stance and in semi-tandem tasks. Results indicated that the C19P-SE has adequate reliability (α = .93) along with factorial, discriminant, and convergent validity. The nanocomposite is synthesized by dispersing silicon nanoparticles in a thermally printable resin, which not only achieves a high refractive index for high-efficiency metalenses but also printing compatibility for inexpensive manufacturing of metalenses. The synthesized nanocomposite exhibits high refractive index >2.2 in the near-infrared regime, and only 10% uniform volume shrinkage after thermal annealing, so the nanocomposite is appropriate for elaborate nanofabrication compared to commercial high-index printable materials. We carried out a wide revision of the anatomy of secondary xylem in spermatophytes and reconstructed the evolution of the different anatomical markers in a time-calibrated phylogeny. By embodying a functionally and evolutionarily significant concept in growth rings we reveal a new panorama for their frequency and show how common they are in diverse lineages of tropical plants. In this context, the principal anatomical markers of growth rings are identified in the evolutionary history of plants and their association with climate-related ecological characteristics. We discuss the function of these anatomical markers, especially for thick-walled and/or radially flattened latewood fibres, fibre zone and dilated rays. Despite the high evolutionary lability of the anatomical markers evidenced by our analyses, they appear to represent deep homologies.The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a rapid transition from in-person office visits to virtual visits in the Down syndrome specialty program at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH DSP). We describe the clinic transition to virtual visits in April 2020 and reflect on our six-month experience in virtual visits. Clinic metrics were tracked. Electronic survey responses were collected from caregivers attending virtual visits. Input from the MGH DSP team was collected. From April to September 2020, we maintained patient volume (45 visits per month) and overall satisfaction score (6.7 out of 7) following a sudden, unanticipated transition to virtual visits. Survey of 17 caregivers attending virtual visits found that most were equipped with technology, had access to a private location, and most were able to access visit without any limitations. Caregivers appreciated the convenience of virtual visits but sometimes missed the personal connection of an in-person visit. Overall, though, virtual visits were frequently viewed as no different than office visits. Team members identified benefits and challenges of virtual visits, as well as lessons learned from this transition. The results showed that after 11 hours of exposure, workers engaged in scavenging, waste sorting, and site monitoring were at risk of respiratory and GI infection in the magnitude of 10-1 . Using this platform, the current study examined the impact of diversifying a cereal/pulse-based SNP-meal with guava on iron status and cognitive development among 24-48 months old children. A three-arm, nonblinded, cluster-randomized controlled trial (CTRI/2014/09/004983) included 399 beneficiaries from 28 preschools in 16 villages in Telangana state, India. The villages were randomly assigned to receive 25 g of guava (guava group (GG)), banana (banana group (BG)), or cucumber (cucumber group (CG)) along with a SNP meal for 140 days. Nutrient biomarkers (iron status, plasma vitamin C, vitamin B12 , and folate), cognitive development, anthropometric indicators (WAZ, HAZ, and WHZ), and morbidity were assessed at baseline and endline. A linear mixed model and a generalized estimating equation were applied to compare changes in outcomes across the groups. All outcome variables were comparable across groups at baseline. The iron to vitamin C molar ratio improved in the GG from 11.4 to 112 but remained unaltered in control groups. Higher hemoglobin (P = 0.002), serum ferritin (SF; P less then 0.001), vitamin C (P = 0.047), and lower soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR; P less then 0.001) causing decreased prevalence of iron deficiency (ID) (P = 0.003) were observed in the GG compared with BG and CG. Prevalence of acute respiratory infection (ARI) was lower in the GG (P = 0.035) versus controls. No impact was observed on cognitive development or growth. Thus, diversifying a cereal/pulse-based meal with guava increased meal vitamin C content, thereby reducing ID and ARI-related morbidity. By ionizing droplets of superfluid helium with low energy electrons (up to 25 eV), it was possible to produce droplets containing up to five negative charges, which remain intact on the timescale of the experiment. Two case studies, one of an infant with cardiac beriberi and the other of a nonalcoholic adult presenting with peripheral neuropathy, cardiomyopathy, and metabolic acidosis and responding to thiamine supplementation, are described in detail. We share our experience with these clinical entities over the past two decades, including recent research and lessons learned, and suggest ways forward to identify at-risk populations in Northeast India, improve early diagnosis and treatment, and promote preventive public health strategies.
