Biomass utilization is facing great challenge mainly due to the low profit margin of biomass products. Bio-energy plants using gasification and liquefaction technologies are barely surviving, while biomass to activated carbon (AC) route has been demonstrated economically successful. In this work, spent mushroom substrate was used to produce AC and fuel gas with two different processes using internal flue gas and external air as activation agents, respectively. Experimental work was conducted to produce input data for Aspen Plus simulation including processing temperature, flue gas composition, AC yield, etc. read more Techno-economic analysis was performed, which reveals a great economic potential of integrating AC production in biomass processing. Air activation has obvious advantage in economic benefits, while the risk of precise temperature control and operation stability needs to be carefully evaluated in large-scale production. Flue gas activation is more reliable and it also generates less CO2 that is beneficial for the long-term operation.A comparison between microwave and ultrasound irradiations in the agave pretreatment using dilute sulfuric acid as catalyst was assessed for the first time. Pretreatments were performed using a Taguchi Orthogonal Array L9 (34) to improve the hemicellulose removal and the agave digestibility. The results showed that under optimal conditions, the hemicellulose removal was superior in the pretreatment assisted with microwave (77.5%) compared to ultrasound (28.2%). Enzymatic hydrolysis yield of agave pretreated with microwave (MWOC) was 2-fold higher than agave pretreated with ultrasound (USOC). The relatively mild conditions of pretreatment with MWOC allowed to obtain a hydrolyzed free of inhibitors with a high glucose concentration (47.7 g/L) at low solids loading (10% w/v). However, these conditions did not have a significant effect over the agave pretreated with ultrasound. The pretreatment assisted with MWOC allowed to reduce time and temperature of the process compared to pretreatment with conventional heating.Aberrant emotion processing is a core characteristic of panic disorder (PD). Findings concerning the underlying neural pathways remain inconsistent. We applied functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in the context of a task based on the circumplex model of affect. This model links affective states to two underlying neurophysiological systems arousal and valence. Twenty-two healthy participants and 20 participants with PD rated arousal and valence in response to affective faces during fMRI. In healthy controls, we found that arousal modulated the hemodynamic response in the parahippocampus, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and the cuneus during face perception. Valence and extreme ratings of valence modulated the hemodynamic response in temporal, parietal, somatosensory, premotor and cerebellar regions. Comparing healthy controls to participants with PD, we found that healthy controls showed a stronger modulation of the hemodynamic response during face perception associated with extreme ratings of valence in the parahippocampus and the supplementary motor area. This suggests parahippocampal dysfunction in the processing of highly valenced affective faces in PD, which may underlie aberrant contextualization of strong affective stimuli. Our findings need to be interpreted with care as they were adjusted for multiple comparisons using a liberal correction procedure.Alcohol induces neuroinflammation but its role in cognitive impairment and impulsivity in alcohol use disorder (AUD) has been poorly investigated. We used proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure brain glutamate (Glu) levels and diffusion-weighted imaging to measure functional anisotropy (FA) in the thalamus and ventral anterior cingulate cortex (vACC) in 15 recently detoxified patients with AUD and 14 matched controls. Compared to controls, AUD patients showed higher Glu levels (p = 0.04) and lower FA in the thalamus (p = 0.04) but not in the vACC. In AUD, thalamic Glu levels (r = 0.62, p = 0.019) and FA (r=-0.55, p = 0.034) were associated with severity of drinking (drinks/week). Compared to controls, AUD patients showed higher scores on Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scale for impulsivity (p = 0.03), which correlated with glutamate levels in the thalamus (r = 0.58, p = 0.03) and vACC (r = 0.55, p = 0.036). In a second cohort of AUD patients (n = 32), Glu in dorsal ACC (dACC) also correlated with Barrett Impulsiveness Scale total score (r = 0.43, p = 0.014). We interpret the elevated thalamic Glu levels and the parallel reduction in FA in AUD-which correlated with drinking severity-as possible evidence of neurotoxicity from neuroinflammation. The association of Glu with impulsivity suggests that neurotoxic effects of chronic alcohol exposure in the thalamus and dACC may contribute to impulsivity.

The paucity of effective treatment in neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) encouraged us to investigate the therapeutic value of artesunate (ART) promised by its inhibitory effect against various tumors and broad safety profile.

We evaluated the impact of ART on three NET cell lines, BON-1, QGP-1 and NCI-H727 on cellular and molecular levels.

Our results showed that ART induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress through phosphorylation of eIF2α, which further gave rise to autophagy in all three NET cell lines. Specifically, apoptosis and ferroptosis were also observed in BON-1 cells, which made BON-1 cell line more vulnerable upon ART treatment. The different sensitivities presented on the three cell lines also associated with a differential regulation of p21 on the long run. Co-treatment with p21 inhibitor UC2288 showed an additive effect on QGP-1 and NCI-H727 cell lines indicating p21 upregulation in these two cell lines might confer resistance towards ART treatment.

It is possible to include ART in the treatment of NETs in the future.

To investigate neurophysiologic and neuroimaging characteristics of patients with late onset unexplained epilepsy (LOUE).

We performed a retrospective chart review of elderly patients with ICD9 diagnosis codes consistent with epilepsy/seizures. Inclusion criteria included unprovoked seizures, and absence of cortical lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). read more Electroencephalograms (EEGs) findings were also analyzed. MRI images were scored for degree of white matter hyperintensities (Fazekas Scale) and mesial temporal atrophy (MTA). Vascular risk factors, and Framingham Heart Study general cardiovascular disease (FHS-CVD) risk scores were compared to controls from the Harvard Aging Brain study (HABS).

We identified 224 LOUE patients and 8% were drug resistant. Epileptiform abnormalities were captured on EEG in 35%. The location was temporal with left sided predominance in 49%. Fazekas scale consisted of 25% beginning of confluent lesions, and 10% large confluent lesions. MTA scores consisted of 21% moderate-severe hippocampal atrophy.
