20% and 16.91% reduction of energy and material costs, respectively. This proposed method can provide full-view decision support for the optimal management of WWTPs and is also expected to support carbon emission control and carbon neutrality in the field of wastewater treatment. The contamination of water by pharmaceutical pollutants is a major issue these days due to excessive use of these ingredients in modern life. This study evaluated the adsorption and effectiveness of a low-cost composite prepared from heavy sugarcane ash (HSA) fused with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and functionalized with iron (Fe3+) in a dynamic system through a fixed-bed column. The solution of synthetic drugs was prepared and placed in a reservoir, using a peristaltic pump the solution is run onto the fixed bed column at a flow rate of 2 mL min-1. Saturation time and adsorption capacity were evaluated by centrifugation and extraction after a regular interval of 2 h from the adsorption column. The samples were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the data was modeled for quantification. For DIC removal, an adsorption capacity of 324.34 μg. g-1 and a saturation time of 22 h were observed, while the adsorption capacity of NAP was 956.49 μg. g-1, with a saturation time of 8 h. Thus, the PETSCA/Fe3+ adsorbent proved to be quite efficient for removing the pharmaceutical pollutants, with a longer period of operation for DIC removal. These findings suggested that a highly efficient bed column made from a less expensive waste material and could be used to remove hazardous pharmaceutical contaminants.Although co-culture of microalgae has been found as a feasible strategy to improve biomass production, their interspecies relationships are not fully understood. Here, two algae taxa, Chlorella sp. and Phormidium sp., were mono-cultured and co-cultured in three photobioreactors for 70 days with periodically harvesting to investigate how dual-species interaction influence nitrogen recovery. Results showed that the co-culture system achieved a significantly higher protein production and nitrogen removal rate than those in the individual cultures at a C/N ratio of 31 (p less then 0.05). see more Genome-Centered metagenomic analysis revealed their cooperative relationship exemplified by cross-feeding. Phormidium sp. had the ability to synthesize pseudo-cobalamin, and Chlorella sp. harbored the gene for remodeling the pseudo-cobalamin to bioavailable vitamin B12. Meanwhile, Chlorella sp. could contribute the costly amino acid and cofactors for Phormidium sp. Their symbiotic interaction facilitated extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production and nitrogen recovery. The EPS concentration in co-culture was positively related to the settling efficiency (R2 = 0.774), which plays an essential role in nitrogen recovery. This study provides new insights into microbial interactions among the photoautotrophic community and emphasizes the importance of algal interspecies interaction in algae-based wastewater treatment.Temperature is a crucial factor affecting microalgae CO2 capture and utilization. However, an in-depth understanding of how microalgae respond to temperature stress is still unclear. In particular, the regulation mechanism under opposite temperature (heat and cold) stress had not yet been reported. In this study, the physicochemical properties and transcription level of related genes of microalgae Auxenochlorella protothecoides UTEX 2341 under heat and cold stress were investigated. Heat stress (Hs) caused a drastic increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in UTEX 2341. As key elements responded to Hs, superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme increased by 150%, 70%, and 30% in activity, and nitric oxide (NO) grew by 409.6%, 212.5%, and 990.4% in content compared with the control at 48 h, 96 h, 168 h. Under cold stress (Cs), ROS increased in the early stage and decreased in the later stage. As key factors responded to Cs, proline (Pro) increased respectively by 285%, 383%, and 81% in content, and heat shock transcriptional factor HSFA1d increased respectively by 161%, 71%, and 204% in transcript level compared with the control at 48 h, 96 h, 168 h. Furthermore, the transcript level of antioxidant enzymes or antioxidant coding genes was consistent with the changing trend of enzymes activity or antioxidant content. Notably, both glutathione (GSH) and heat shock protein 97 (hsp 97) were up-regulated in response to Hs and Cs. In conclusion, GSH and hsp 97 were the core elements of UTEX 2341 in response to both Hs and Cs. SOD and NO were the key elements that responded to Hs, while proline and HSFA1d were the key elements that responded to Cs. This study provided a basis for the understanding of the response mechanism of microalgae under temperature stress and the improvement of the microalgae tolerance to temperature stress.Accumulated clinical evidence has shown that Posner-Schlossman syndrome (PSS) is most likely the result of recurrent human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection in the anterior chamber (AC). Establishing an animal model is necessary to investigate the pathogenesis of PSS. In this study, we constructed a mouse model of (PSS) by injecting murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) into the AC of BALB/c mice. Twenty-five BALB/c mice were divided into 5 groups. Smith strain MCMV expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) was passaged with mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF). Right eyes in the 4 experiment groups received AC injection of 1 μL of virus solution with concentrations of 103,104,105,106 pfu/mL respectively, and the control group received only PBS. PSS-like signs (mutton-fat keratic precipitates (KP), pupil dilation, IOP elevation and corneal edema) were recorded 0-28 days post-injection (DPI). Sections of eyeballs from another 9 mice harvested on 0,10 and 28 DPI were examined to locate KP and the fluorescence sig This might account for the recurrent and self-limited nature of PSS.Although many more eyes of children with retinoblastoma are salvaged now compared to just 10 years ago, the control of vitreous seeding remains a challenge. The introduction of intravitreal injection of melphalan has enabled more eyes to be salvaged safely but with definite retinal toxicity. Intensive treatment with high-dose intravitreal topotecan may be a strategy to control tumor burden because of its cell cycle-dependent cytotoxicity and the proven safety in humans. Therefore, we evaluated the ocular and systemic safety of repeated high-dose intravitreal injections of topotecan in rabbits. Systemic and ocular toxicity was assessed in non-tumor-bearing rabbits after four weekly injections of three doses of topotecan (10 μg, 25 μg, and 50 μg) or vehicle alone. Animals were evaluated weekly for general and ophthalmic clinical status. One week after the last injection, vitreous and plasma samples were collected for drug quantification and the enucleated eyes were subjected to histological assessment. Weight, hair loss, or changes in hematologic values were absent during the study period across all animal groups. Eyes injected with all topotecan doses or vehicle showed no signs of anterior segment inflammation, clinical or histologic evidence of damage to the retina, and ERG parameters remained unaltered throughout the study. Vitreous and plasma topotecan lactone concentrations were undetectable. Four weekly intravitreal injections of topotecan up to 50 μg in the animal model or a 100 μg human equivalent dose were not toxic for the rabbit eye. High doses of topotecan may show promising translation to the clinic for the management of difficult-to-treat retinoblastoma vitreous seeds.High myopia has been continually increasing globally until now and often results in visual impairment. Scleral extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling is considered a common factor contributing to progression of myopia. However, the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in regulating scleral ECM organization is not well understood. We aimed to explore the effect and regulatory mechanism of hsa-miR-142-3p on collagen I in human scleral fibroblasts in high myopia. First, next-generation sequencing was conducted to identify 37 miRNAs differentially expressed in the aqueous humor of high myopia samples and control samples. Furthermore, hsa-miR-142-3p in the aqueous humor was found to positively relate to the ocular axial length. Besides, the results of immunofluorescence and Western blot assay indicated that hsa-miR-142-3p overexpression decreased collagen I expression in the human fetal scleral fibroblasts (HFSFs); while hsa-miR-142-3p downregulation increased collagen I. Moreover, hsa-miR-142-3p targets TGFβ-1 gene expression. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and Western blot analysis showed that miRNA 142-3p reduced TGFβ-1 expression while an inhibitor had an opposite effect. Therefore, there is an inverse relationship between changes in miR-142-3p expression levels and those of collagen1a1 in human scleral fibroblasts. Such a dependence suggests that miR-142-3p may be a target to improve therapeutic management of this condition. The vast majority of patients with corneal blindness cannot recover their vision due to the serious shortage of donor cornea. However, the technology to construct a feasible corneal substitute is a promising treatment method for corneal blindness. In this paper, methacrylated gelatin (GelMA)-methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HAMA) double network (GHDN) hydrogels were prepared by modifying gelatin and hyaluronic acid with methacrylate anhydride (MA). GHDN hydrogel was compared with GelMA single network and HAMA single network hydrogels through characterization experiments of mechanical properties, optical properties, hydrophilicity and in-situ degradation in vitro. At the same time, the biocompatibility of hydrogel was tested by inoculating rabbit corneal epithelial cells (CEpCs) epidermal cells on hydrogels using CCK-8 test, live/dead staining, immunofluorescence staining and qRT-PCR. It was found that the GHDN hydrogel has optical transparency in the visible region, and its mechanical properties are better than those of GelMA and HAMA hydrogels, and its hydrophilicity is similar to that of normal human corneas. The results of in vitro hydrogel culture of CEpCs showed that the proliferation of CEpCs on GHDN hydrogel was two times higher than that of HAMA hydrogel, and the expression of specific marker Cytokeratin 3 (CK3) and Cytokeratin 12 (CK12) could be better maintained on GHDN hydrogel. All the experimental results proved that GHDN hydrogel has good physical properties and biocompatibility and is a potential candidate for corneal tissue engineering scaffolds.Water is of central importance for reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. With predictions of dire global water scarcity, attention is turning to resources that are considered to be unconventional, and hence called Unconventional Water Resources (UWRs). These are considered as supplementary water resources that need specialized processes to be used as water supply. The literature encompasses a vast number of studies on various UWRs and their usefulness in certain environmental and/or socio-economic contexts. However, a recent, all-encompassing article that brings the collective knowledge on UWRs together is missing. Considering the increasing importance of UWRs in the global push for water security, the current study intends to offer a nuanced understanding of the existing research on UWRs by summarizing the key concepts in the literature. The number of articles published on UWRs have increased significantly over time, particularly in the past ten years. And while most publications were authored from researchers based in the USA or China, other countries such as India, Iran, Australia, and Spain have also featured prominently.
