This paper investigated whether a single Hormonal Growth Promotant (HGP) adjustment in the Meat Standards Australia (MSA) beef grading model adequately predicted consumer eating quality of beef from cattle treated with different HGP formulations. This paper used consumer sensory data from two experiments. In experiment one, a total of 300 steers were allocated to three treatments; control (CON-100-F), 100 day oestradiol only HGP (OES-100-F), or a combination of trenbolone acetate and oestradiol HGP (TBA+OES-100-F) and finished in a feedlot for 73 days. In experiment two, a total of 200 steers were allocated either control or 400 day oestradiol only HGP treatments and finished on pasture for 389 days. Steers were slaughtered by finishing regime and carcass traits recorded. The anterior and posterior portions of the m. longissimus lumborum (LL-A and LL-P, respectively) and m. gluteus medius (GM) were collected and aged for five or 35 days. Grilled meat samples were scored for tenderness, juiciness, liking of flon was observed in the CON-100-F and TBA+OES-100-F treatment samples, which may be due to factors such as genetic variation and/or production environment. Minimal bias was observed when residual MQ4 was regressed against predicted MQ4 for the range of feeding regimes, muscles, ageing periods and treatment groups. This study showed that a single HGP adjustment in the MSA beef grading model, combined with the indirect effects of the different HGP formulations on carcass traits, provided a reasonable prediction of meat eating quality for different HGP formulations.Taking into account functional traits in the breeding practice should lead to a longer productive life of cows. However, despite the increased contribution of these traits in bull selection indices, their daughters are frequently culled as early as the 2nd or 3rd lactation. The problem is whether and to what extent the genetic potential of animals is realized in the production practice. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the associations between the breeding value (BV) of bulls and their daughters for cow longevity and culling reasons in the Holstein-Friesian cattle population in Poland. Data for 532 062 cows culled in 2012, 2015, and 2018 were analyzed. A majority of 5 045 cow sires originated from Poland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the United States. The highest variation in the contribution of culling reasons was for the cows culled at the age of 2-4 years. The contribution of the culling reasons, analyzed in relation to the cow culling age, remained similar and the only excepFriesian cows aged at least 9 years at culling to be long-living animals. This is primarily evidenced by the rapid increase in the culling due to old age in relation to younger cows. Nowadays the above age limit can be suggested as a criterion of longevity for Holstein-Friesian cows but the criterion should be updated to the relation genotype-environment-economy that tends to change over time.Calcium (Ca) and non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) are fundamental minerals for bone formation and growth, and optimizing their level is required in broiler production. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect and interaction of dietary Ca and NPP on growth performance, tibial characteristics and biochemical variables for slow-growing yellow-feathered broilers during 1-28 d (the starter phase). Seven hundred and twenty hatchling female broilers were randomly divided into nine groups, which received three levels of Ca (0.80%, 0.90%, 1.00%) each with three levels of NPP (0.40%, 0.45%, 0.50%). The results showed (1) Dietary Ca level influenced (P 0.05) growth performance of broilers. (2) Dietary Ca affected (P less then 0.05) tibial length. Compared with birds provided with 0.80% Ca, the length of tibia was decreased (P less then 0.05) in birds received 1.00% Ca. Interactions between dietary Ca and NPP were observed (P less then 0.05) on ash content, breaking strength and bone density of tibia. These three characteristics were better when birds received 0.90% Ca and 0.40% NPP or 1.00% Ca and 0.45% NPP. (3) Dietary Ca significantly affected (P less then 0.05) the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in serum with decreased activity in birds fed 0.80% or 0.90% Ca. The dietary NPP influenced (P less then 0.05) the contents of Ca in serum. Serum Ca was increased when birds were provided 0.40% NPP compared with other levels (P less then 0.05). Again, there was interaction between Ca and NPP in diet on the contents of phosphorus (P) in serum (P less then 0.05). In conclusion, interactions occurred between dietary Ca and NPP level on tibial breaking strength, density, ash content, and the content of P in the serum of young yellow-feathered broilers. Furthermore, dietary Ca affected ADFI, FG and serum ALP activity, and dietary NPP also affected the P content in serum. Considering all indicators, 0.90% Ca and 0.40% NPP are optimal for slow-growing yellow-feathered broilers during 1-28 d of age.The expected increase in boar (pig entire male) production while societal concerns for castration increase requires good estimations of their nutrient requirements. Cell Cycle inhibitor In this work, a meta-analytical approach was used to overcome the inconsistent results between studies that compared lysine requirements of boars and gilts. For this meta-analysis, data from 14 different studies analysing the effect of increasing dietary lysine on growth performance of finishing pigs, 70-100 kg average body weight, were extracted from 11 publications. Those studies represented 128 different treatments (53 for boars and 75 for gilts). Diets were reformulated based on NRC (2012) ingredient values to calculate standardized ileal digestible lysine to net energy ratio (SID LysNE) and daily SID Lys intake using average daily feed intake (ADFI). As expected, no evidence for differences in ADFI (P = 0.303) was observed between boars and gilts. However, boars grew faster (P  less then  0.001) and had higher gain to feed (GF; P  less then  g boars and gilts. Maximum boars' productive performance when dietary lysine was not limiting was 116% of gilts, and at those levels the amount of SID Lys intake required per kg gain was similar between both sexes. Thus, because ADFI and Lys efficiency of gain was similar, the requirement differences were driven by the increased growth rate and gain to feed ratio between boars and gilts. In conclusion, the present study confirmed a greater productive response of boars compared to gilts when increasing dietary lysine.
