The comprehensive model framework is built on a Matlab/Simulink® platform. Life Cycle Energy Assessment (LCEA) is used to generate the embodied energy use variables which are input to the simulation-optimisation model. The model is sufficiently flexible to accommodate water supply systems of variable spatial scales and analyse water and energy use at variable time scales. The application of the modelling framework on the Aurora urban development estate, Australia, shows that the model produces essential information about the water supply and energy use intensity according to specified criteria.

A considerable proportion of individuals in late life experience dual sensory impairment (DSI), which can be defined as the combined presence of hearing and visual problems. However, there is little knowledge regarding the psychosocial correlates of DSI. Consequently, our objective of this study was to identify the link between DSI and psychosocial factors in middle-aged and older adults.

Data were used from the sixth wave of the nationally representative German Ageing Survey. Individuals were classified as dual sensory impaired when both visual and hearing impairments existed. As psychosocial correlates, we included life satisfaction, positive affect, negative affect, depressive symptoms, loneliness, social isolation, self-esteem and autonomy. Outcome measures were quantified using widely established scales. In our analytical sample, there were 5138 observations.

Bivariate analysis showed that, compared to individuals with no sensory impairment, individuals with DSI had markedly worse psychosocial factors (in terms of life satisfaction, positive affect, negative affect, depressive symptoms, loneliness, social isolation, self-esteem and autonomy). Adjusting for various covariates, regression analysis showed that individuals with DSI consistently experienced worse psychosocial factors compared to individuals with no sensory impairment.

Our current study stressed the cross-sectional association between DSI and worse psychosocial factors. Longitudinal studies are needed to confirm our findings.

To measure the size of the bioeconomy in European Union (EU) countries, it is necessary to create appropriate indicators that allow it to be monitored with reference to its current state, growth rate and sector description. In many countries, including Poland, there is no complete information or data collection system to monitor bioeconomy development directly, e.g. in the Polish Central Statistical Office. In response to these needs, several groups of indicators related to the circular economy, sustainable development and Europe 2020 were created by the European Commission (EC) in the Eurostat database. These indicators can help monitoring of bioeconomy development in EU countries. The present study discusses factors for bioeconomy development through an analysis of their social, economic and environmental aspects, as well as showing the value of the selected indicators in the EU and Poland. In addition, a separate section is dedicated to public perception of bioeconomy and to legislation regarding genetically modified organisms (GMOs). To date, many research studies have been reported on the public acceptance of bioeconomy issues in the EU, including renewable resources, biofuels, GMOs, bio-based products, food security and climate change. Vardenafil molecular weight The awareness and perception of society on the bioeconomy, bio-based products and processes, and the sustainable use of resources can contribute to environmental sustainability, but intensified efforts are required to increase public acceptance.Sesquiterpenes belong to the largest group of plant secondary metabolites, which consist of three isoprene building units. These compounds are widely distributed in various angiosperms, a few gymnosperms and bryophytes. Sesquiterpenes and their allied derivatives are bio-synthesized in various plant parts including leaves, fruits and roots. These plant-based metabolites are predominantly identified in the Asteraceae family, wherein up to 5000 complexes have been documented to date. Sesquiterpenes and their derivatives are characteristically associated with plant defence mechanisms owing to their antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral activities. Over the last two decades, these compounds have been reportedly demonstrated health promoting perspectives against a wide range of metabolic syndromes i.e. hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular complications, neural disorders, diabetes, and cancer. The high potential of sesquiterpenes and their derivatives against various cancers like breast, colon, bladder, pancreatic, prostate, cervical, brain, liver, blood, ovarium, bone, endometrial, oral, lung, eye, stomach and kidney are the object of this review. Predominantly, it recapitulates the literature elucidating sesquiterpenes and their derivatives while highlighting the mechanistic approaches associated with their potent anticancer activities such as modulating nuclear factor kappa (NF-kB) activity, inhibitory action against lipid peroxidation and retarding the production of reactive oxygen & nitrogen species (ROS&RNS).Cathepsins are lysosomal acid hydrolases that make crucial contributions to tumor progression through a variety of signaling mechanisms, including autophagy, cell survival, chemotherapeutic resistance, and metastasis. Herein, we report that cathepsin C (CTSC) silencing upregulates the anticancer potential of curcumin in colorectal cancer cells (CRCs) both in vitro and in athymic mice xenografts. Curcumin treatment enhances CTSC level in CRCs; however, CTSC silencing with subsequent curcumin treatment (sequential treatment) induces ER stress and autophagic dysregulation accompanied by lysosomal permeabilization and ROS generation. This lysosomal permeabilization triggered the cytosolic CTSB mediated BID-dependent mitochondrial membrane permeabilization and thereby caspase-dependent apoptosis. This phenotype can be rescued by CTSB inhibition and NAC, which further supported the involvement of ROS and CTSB in apoptosis following sequential treatment. Indeed, the sequential CTSC silencing and curcumin treatment also significantly curtailed tumor volume as well as ameliorated cytosolic cyt c and tBID protein levels in tumor tissues compared to those in control and individual treatments of CTSC targeting and on curcumin treatment in nude mice xenografts.
