488, p < 0.0001) in the obese group only.

Liraglutide had beneficial actions on glycemic parameters and cardiometabolic risk factors in both non-obese and obese patients with T2DM, with a greater efficacy in the latter. These findings reinforce the benefits of liraglutide for the cardiometabolic outcomes of obese patients with T2DM in the real-world setting. This has critical importance during the current pandemic, since patients with diabetes and obesity are exposed globally to the most severe forms of COVID-19, related complications, and death.

Tropical cyclones impact human health, sometimes catastrophically. Epidemiological research characterizes these health impacts and uncovers pathways between storm hazards and health, helping to mitigate the health impacts of future storms. These studies, however, require researchers to identify people and areas exposed to tropical cyclones, which is often challenging. Here we review approaches, tools, and data products that can be useful in this exposure assessment.

Epidemiological studies have used various operational measures to characterize exposure to tropical cyclones, including measures of physical hazards (e.g., wind, rain, flooding), measures related to human impacts (e.g., damage, stressors from the storm), and proxy measures of distance from the storm's central track. The choice of metric depends on the research question asked by the study, but there are numerous resources available that can help in capturing any of these metrics of exposure. Each has strengths and weaknesses that may influence de epidemiologists as they design studies to explore how tropical cyclones influence human health.

Many cancer survivors commonly face psychological health issues upon cancer diagnosis, both during and after treatment. Patient-centered communication can play an important role in improving health outcomes among cancer survivors across the cancer continuum. The current study examined the influence of patient-centered communication on self-efficacy in managing health, cognitive reappraisal, and emotional distress among cancer survivors.

The analysis was conducted on a subsample of 809 cancer survivors acquired from a nationally representative 2019 Health Information National Trends Survey 5 (Cycle 3). Multivariate regression analysis was conducted to explore the pathways through which patient-centered communication can be associated with cancer survivors' emotional distress, mediated by self-efficacy and cognitive reappraisal.

The results indicated that effective patient-centered provider communication led to higher self-efficacy in managing health, greater involvement in cognitive reappraisal, and decr not only recognize, elicit, and respond to patient's emotions, but also develop emotional regulation skills among patients, and improve their ability to cope with emotional distress.To-be-memorized information in verbal working memory (WM) can be presented sequentially, like in oral language, and simultaneously, like in written language. Few studies have addressed the importance and implications for verbal WM processing of these two presentation modes. AZ 960 cost While sequential presentation may favor discrete, temporal encoding processes, simultaneous presentation may favor spatial encoding processes. We compared immediate serial recall tasks for sequential versus simultaneous word list presentation with a specific focus on serial position curves of recall performance, transposition gradients, and the nature of serial order errors. First, we observed higher recall performance in the simultaneous compared to the sequential conditions, with a particularly large effect at end-of-list items. Moreover, results showed more transposition errors between non-adjacent items for the sequential condition, as well as more omission errors especially for start-of-list items. This observation can be explained in terms of differences in refreshing opportunities for start-of-list items during encoding between conditions. This study shows that the presentation mode of sequential material can have a significant impact on verbal WM performance, with an advantage for simultaneous encoding of sequence information.Small-scale fisheries have been associated with the subjective well-being of coastal communities through their links with culture, identity, and social cohesion. But although fish catches are usually considered the primary ecosystem service that benefits fishers, little is known about how subjective well-being is influenced by the fishing activity itself. Here, we applied the experience sampling method in two small-scale fisheries in Bangladesh to assess the effects of fishing on fishers' occurrence of positive and negative affect, two measures of subjective well-being. We found that fishing activities were not directly associated with increased momentary affect and that the frequency of positive affect actually decreased as the fishing trip progressed. Furthermore, although very low catches were associated with less positive affect, the highest frequency of positive affect was achieved with relatively small catches. Our results imply that the benefits provided by small-scale fisheries to the momentary subjective well-being of fishers are not strongly related to the actual catching of fish.Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that involves abnormal electrical signal patterns of the brain called seizures. The brain's electrical signals can be recorded using an electroencephalogram (EEG). EEG recordings can be used to monitor complex and non-stationary signals produced by the brain for detecting epilepsy seizures. Machine learning (ML) methods have been successfully applied in different domains to accurately classify the patterns based upon dataset features. However, ML methods are unable to analyze the raw EEG signals. Appropriate features must be extracted from EEG recordings for detecting epilepsy seizures using signal processing methods. This work proposes an intelligent system by integrating variational mode decomposition (VMD) and Hilbert transform (HT) method for extracting useful features from EEG signals and stacked neural network (NN) method for detecting epilepsy seizures. VMD method decomposers EEG signals into intrinsic mode functions, followed by the HT method for extracting features from EEG signals. The stacked-NN approach is applied for detecting epilepsy seizures using extracted features. The performance of the proposed system is validated using benchmark datasets for epilepsy seizure detection provided by Bonn University and, Neurology and Sleep Centre, New Delhi (NSC-ND). The performance of the proposed system is compared with other ML methods and state of the art approaches in the field. The reported results demonstrate that the proposed system can detect up to 100% accurate epilepsy seizures using NSC-ND data set and up to 99% accurate epilepsy seizures using Bonn university dataset. The comparative results also demonstrate the better performance of the proposed system over other ML methods and existing approaches for detecting epilepsy seizures. The remarkable performance of the proposed system can help neurological experts to detect epilepsy seizures accurately using EEG signals and can be embedded into the real-time diagnosis of the disease.

We have designed a reinforced drug-loaded vascular graft composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) and polydioxanone (PDO) via a combination of electrospinning/3D printing approaches. To evaluate its potential for clinical application, we compared the in vivo blood compatibility and performance of PCL/PDO + 10%DY grafts doped with an antithrombotic drug (dipyridamole) with a commercial expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) graft in a porcine model.

A total of 10 pigs (weight 25-35kg) were used in this study. We made a new 5-mm graft with PCL/PDO composite nanofiber via the electrospinning technique. We simultaneously implanted a commercially available e-PTFE graft (n = 5) and our PCL/PDO + 10%DY graft (n = 5) into the carotid arteries of the pigs. No anticoagulant/antiplatelet agent was administered during the follow-up period, and ultrasonography was performed weekly to confirm the patency of the two grafts in vivo. Four weeks later, we explanted and compared the performance of the two grafts by histologica substitute for vascular reconstruction and bypass surgeries. Long-term observations will be necessary to determine the anti-thrombotic and remodeling potential of this device.

The PCL/PDO + 10%DY graft was well tolerated, and no adverse tissue reaction was observed in porcine carotid models during the short-term follow-up. Colonization of the graft by host endothelial and smooth muscle cells coupled with substantial extracellular matrix production marked the regenerative capability. Thus, this material may be an ideal substitute for vascular reconstruction and bypass surgeries. Long-term observations will be necessary to determine the anti-thrombotic and remodeling potential of this device.

To improve knowledge of the tricuspid valve and right atrioventricular junction (RAVJ) coupling, four-dimensional (4D) imaging is mandatory (3D + time). Based on multiphase cardiac-volume computed tomography (CT) and innovative 4D analysis, we proposed to assess dynamical features of tricuspid annulus (TA) in relation to the right ventricle (RV) and right atrial (RA) functions.

Cardiac-volume CT data sets through time were obtained in 30 healthy patients (Male 57%, mean age 57 ± 11 years). Using an in-house software, 3D semi-automated delineation of 18 points around TA perimeter were defined through 10 cardiac phases within RR interval and used to calculate TA features such as 3D/2D areas, perimeters, 360°-diameters and vertical deformation. RV and RA inner contours were also delineated. Bi-dimensional parameters were compared with multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) measurements.

TA was elliptical in horizontal projection with a maximal eccentricity index (EcI

) of 0.58 ± 0.12; and saddle-shaped in vertical projection with a horn nearby the antero-septal commissure. This feature remained throughout the cardiac cycle, but TA was more planar and less circular in late diastole (TA-height 4.53 ± 1.06 mm, EcI

= 0.61 ± 0.14) when TA 3D area and perimeter reached a maximum of 7.05 ± 1.23 and 7.48 ± 0.93cm/m

, respectively. Correlations between minimal and maximal TA 3D areas and TA Projected 2D areas were excellent (r = 0.993 and r = 0.995, p < 0.001). TA 2D area measurements by MPR overestimated the projected values by 22 to 24%. Correlation between RV concentric strain and TA maximal diameter shortening was r = 0.452 (p = 0.01).

Treatment of mixed astigmatism with laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is complex as the correction requires flattening the cornea in one meridian while steepening the cornea in the other meridian. The bitoric technique has become the most popular approach and has been tested across a variety of platforms. This study is the first to evaluate the results of mixed astigmatism treatment using the Allegretto WaveLight

EX500.

This study was a single-center, retrospective, noncomparative analysis of 400 eyes that underwent LASIK to correct for mixed astigmatism utilizing the EX500 excimer laser. Data on uncorrected distance visual acuity, corrected distance visual acuity, and spherical equivalent was analyzed at consecutive intervals (1, 3, 6, 9, and 12months). Refractive measurements were used to perform a vector analysis.

Three and 12months postoperatively, 71% and 74% of eyes had an uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) of 20/20 or better and 99% and 100% of eyes had a UDVA of 20/40 or better, respectively.
