Experiment I compared preference of sexually experienced males between odors of castrated males injected with a GnRH antagonist (Cast+Ant), castrated males injected with saline (Cast), and gonadally intact males (Sham). These olfactory preference tests revealed that probe males significantly preferred Cast over Sham and Cast+Ant odors but had no preference between Sham and Cast+Ant odors. Experiment II used hypophysectomy (HPx) to remove the gonadotropin source in place of pharmacologically antagonizing GnRH. Similarly, the probe males preferred Cast (high both GnRH and gonadotropins) over HPx (high GnRH but no gonadotropin) odors, but also preferred HPx than Sham (low both GnRH and gonadotropins) odors. We then examined the effects of exogenous gonadotropins, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG), to reveal which gonadotropins critically affect on the attractiveness of HPx males. The olfactory preference tests revealed that injecting eCG, but not hCG, significantly increased the probe males` preference compared to HPx male odor, suggesting that the attractiveness is augmented via follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) receptor rather than luteinizing hormone receptor. We hypothesized that olfaction may untangle the mixed evidence on the relationship between sex hormones and empathy-related measures (cognitive and affective) in humans. To test this, we examined 60 healthy participants in three sex-hormone-status groups free-cycling women tested in cycle phases with higher 17-β estradiol and progesterone, oral-contraceptive users (low estradiol and progesterone), and men. We assessed empathy-related measures, facial mimicry (from zygomaticus and corrugator muscle activity), and odor discrimination ability. In the empathy-related measures and facial mimicry, we did not find overall group effects or meaningful associations with salivary levels of estradiol, progesterone, or testosterone. Free-cycling women only outperformed men in the recognition of emotions from pictures of the eye region, but sex hormones were unrelated to emotion recognition performance. Oral contraceptive users showed higher scores in the affective empathy-related measure when viewing negative emotions, with no relation to hormone levels. Free-cycling women exhibited the strongest facial mimicry (viewing female, but not male protagonists), positively associated with progesterone. Finally, the groups differed in odor discrimination, with free-cycling women outperforming men. However, odor discrimination ability and empathy-related performance were not correlated. Our results support a role of sex hormones in odor perception and in empathy-related measures, to a certain extent. However, no common underlying mechanism was found.Firefighter uniforms protect firefighters from exposure to potentially harmful chemicals including a range of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). Contaminated uniforms can become a secondary source of firefighters' exposure to these chemicals. There is inconsistency on the removal efficiency of SVOCs during the cleaning, laundering and field decontamination of firefighting uniforms. Therefore, this study aims to assess how effective decontamination and laundering processes are in reducing firefighter uniforms as a vector for transport and exposure to SVOCs. Firefighters who had attended a controlled house fire and simulated container burns had their uniforms sampled pre- and post-laundering. Clean station wear was laundered with contaminated uniforms and after a load of contaminated uniforms to assess inter and intra load contamination. Surface wipes were collected from uniforms across 12 fire stations, after they had returned from a laundering provider. Concentrations of 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), six organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) and seven polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured in the collected samples.
