A great amount of iron ore tailings from the collapse of the Fundão dam in Southeast Brazil was deposited in an extensive agricultural area. The presence of this material creates insecurity for the resumption of agricultural activities, especially the cultivation of vegetables, which can accumulate metals at potentially toxic levels. In this study, two vegetables consumed in the affected area, arugula and radish, were cultivated in tailings and in soil. Productivity, photosynthetic pigment content, photosynthetic performance, metal accumulation, and the possible risk to food safety were analyzed. The productivity of both vegetables, arugula and radish, did not differ between cultivation in tailings and in soil. There were no differences in pigment content nor substantial differences in the photosynthetic parameters of plants grown in the two substrates. Plants grown in tailings had higher Fe, Mn, and Na contents than those grown in soil, reflecting the higher levels of these elements in the former. There were no visual signs of metal toxicity for plants grown in the tailings. The levels of metals potentially ingested through estimated consumption of arugula and radish grown in the tailings were below the maximum allowable limits for human consumption. In addition, calculated risk indices suggest a low potential for harm to the health of consumers of cultivated vegetables in the tailings. The results presented here suggest that agricultural cultivation in the tailings is viable and contribute to the resumption of vegetable cultivation in the region affected by the tailings released with the collapse of the Fundão dam.A first-morning urine test for screening urinary protein is important for distinguishing whether asymptomatic proteinuria, which is a common finding in school-aged children, is caused due to kidney disease or not. We report the case of a 12-year-old Japanese girl who was referred to our pediatric department for asymptomatic proteinuria detected during a school urinary screening. Proteinuria was found only on the first-morning urinalysis and not on the routine urinalysis. The patient had been diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and treated with a nighttime brace. As excess protein was not detected on urinalysis of the first-morning urine sample that was collected after a night without the brace, proteinuria due to the brace treatment for scoliosis was diagnosed. The present case revealed that brace treatment can cause proteinuria. Even if a first-morning urine is positive for protein, an unexpected cause can trigger asymptomatic proteinuria in a growing child. As genetic inheritance is an inevitable risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease (CHD), it is critical to identify the polymorphisms of CHD risk. This study explored whether the NPAS4 polymorphisms are related to the CHD risk in the Chinese Han population. Five SNPs in NPAS4 were genotyped using Agena Mass ARRAY from 499 CHD and 500 controls. RT-PCR detected the NPAS4 expression levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 50 CHD and 50 controls. χ2 test compared the distributions of gender, allele and genotypes frequencies between cases and controls. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). MDR analyzed the SNP-SNP interactions on risk of CHD. U test compared the differences in gene expression between different groups. The results showed that rs4466842 was correlated with an increased CHD risk in overall, males and age ≤ 60; rs117186164 and rs12785321 were significantly related to an increased CHD risk in male and age ≤ 60, respectively; haplotype Ars117186164Crs4466842 was significantly correlated with an increased CHD risk. SNP-SNP interactions results showed that the best model was the four-locus model was the combination of rs117770654, rs117957381, rs12785321, and rs4466842 (CVC = 10/10, Testing Sensitivity = 0.647). The expression levels of NPAS4 in the case group (0.365 ± 0.139) were significantly lower than that in the control group (0.782 ± 0.224) (P less then 0.001). The results revealed that SNPs in NPAS4 may play an important role in the occurrence and development of CHD.The effectiveness of a Geographical Information Systems cost-distance tool for detecting landscape permeability in relation to the movement of pests in olive landscapes was established. The simplification of agricultural systems is linked to an increased incidence of pests on crops. Therefore, it is important to understand the impact of different land uses surrounding olive groves on pests. In this work, we analysed the effect of the structure of the olive landscape on the movement of two main olive pests-the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera Tephritidae) and the olive moth, Prays oleae (Bernard) (Lepidopetera Praydidae). We applied linear mixed effects models to analyse the relationship between pest abundance and cost-distance, using different hypotheses to evaluate those land uses that are favourable or unfavourable for the movement of these pests. The results show that this methodology is effective in detecting possible unfavourable land uses with a barrier effect, such as woodland and artificial land uses, and favourable land uses with a corridor effect such as olive groves. Whether other land uses, such as scrubland or riverbanks, act as a barrier or corridor depends on the pest and its life cycle stage. The effect that different land uses have in maintaining low levels of pest populations and ensuring the long-term sustainability of these agricultural systems are discussed. The implications of landscape permeability for the physical structure of the landscape and the dispersal of organisms, and the potential of that landscape to impact the continuous flow of natural processes are also addressed. This paper establishes the global attractivity of a positive constant equilibrium of a nonlocal and time-delayed diffusive malaria model in a homogeneous case. The same problem was achieved in a recent paper (Lou and Zhao in J Math Biol 62543-568, 2011) by using the fluctuation method, but with a sufficient condition that the disease will become stable requires a sufficiently large basic reproduction number [Formula see text]. The present study is devoted to remove the sufficient condition by utilizing an appropriate Lyapunov functional and shows that the disease will become stable when [Formula see text] is exactly greater than one, which remarkably improves the known results in Lou and Zhao (2011).The cessation of ovarian function is associated with an increase in abdominal adipose tissue, dyslipidemia, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which may contribute to the augmented cardiovascular risk observed in postmenopausal women. After ovarian function stops, circulating triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations increase, whereas high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) and lipoprotein (Lp(a)) remain essentially unchanged. Similarly, the rates of NAFLD, possibly including the advanced forms of the disease (e.g., hepatic fibrosis), increase in postmenopausal compared with premenopausal women. These effects make menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) an attractive way to restore them. Estrogen per os decreases LDL-C and Lp(a) and increases HDL-C and triglyceride concentrations. The transdermal administration of estrogen has a more neutral effect on triglycerides, albeit a less beneficial effect on LDL-C, HDL-C, and Lp(a). Co-administration of a progestagen diminishes the effect of estrogen on LDL-C, HDL-C, and Lp(a), which, however, remains beneficial. Importantly, the effect may vary with different progestagens, being lesser with natural progesterone and dydrogesterone. Regarding the effect of MHT on NAFLD, though experimental data are currently favorable, clinical evidence is to date limited and controversial. Therefore, there is a need for specifically designed clinical trials, ideally with paired liver biopsies, to demonstrate the effect of different MHT schemes on NAFLD, which is of considerable importance, given that NAFLD is more prevalent after the cessation of ovarian function.
To present the ethical issues, moral arguments, and reasons found in the ethical literature on organoid models.
In this systematic review of reasons in ethical literature, we selected sources based on predefined criteria (1) The publication mentions moral reasons or arguments directly relating to the creation and/or use of organoid models in biomedical research; (2) These moral reasons and arguments are significantly addressed, not as mere passing mentions, or comprise a large portion of the body of work; (3) The publication is peer-reviewed and published in an academic article, book, national-level report, working paper, or Ph.D. thesis; (4) The publications collected are in English.
Each article was read in-depth for identifiable moral reasons, arguments, and concerns. These were then inductively classified and synthesized to create broader categories of reasons, and eventually an overarching conceptual scheme was created.
A total of twenty-three sources were included and analyzed out of an initial 266 collected sources. Five themes of ethical issues and arguments were found Animal Experimentation; Clinical Applications and Experiments; Commercialization and Consent; Organoid Ontology and Moral Status; and Research Ethics and Research Integrity. These themes are then further broken down into sub-themes and topics. Given the extensive nature of the topics found, we will focus on describing the topics that comprised of more in-depth reasons and arguments rather than few, passing mentions or concerns.
The ethics of organoids requires further deliberation in multiple areas, as much of the discussions are not presented as in-depth arguments. Such sentiments are also echoed throughout the organoid ethics literature.

The results are thoroughly tested using generated images, and we offer valuable criteria for image acquisition settings to optimize accuracy. We demonstrate that the most important parameter is the number of cells in the field of view, and we show that accurate measurements can already be made on volume only containing [Formula see text] cells. The resolution in z is also not so important, and a reduced number of in-depth images, of order of one per cell, already provides a measure of the mean cell size with less than 5% error. The technique thus appears to be a very promising tool for very fast live local volume cell measurement in 3D tissues in vivo while strongly limiting photobleaching and phototoxicity issues. In the current study, predictions of a theoretical account to the explanation of the Quiet Eye (QE) were investigated. To this end, by manipulating the learning environment, participants (n = 52) learned an underhand throwing task which required to explore task-solution spaces of low vs. high density over a 4-week training phase (640 training trials). buy MK-5108 Although throwing performance was improved, surprisingly, in posttest and retention test shorter QE durations were found. It is speculated that on a short-time learning scale this effect might be explained by more efficient information processing. Moreover, a trend was observed which suggests that-in line with the inhibition hypothesis-when exploring high-density task-solution spaces longer QE durations are required. However, the rather small effect sizes necessitate further research, which will allow to manipulate the response-effect mappings more directly as, for example, in virtual environments.
