A male infant presented with large hemangioma of the right parotid gland diagnosed at the age of 3 months. Starting at the age of 4 months, he was treated with oral propranolol for 10 months, which led to a marked reduction in tumor size and strawberry hemangioma. Our case shows that propranolol is effective and safe in treating large parotid infantile hemangioma.Nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn (NSJ) is a benign congenital hamartoma composed of follicular, adnexal appendages and epidermal hyperplasia. Various secondary neoplasms, mostly adnexal in origin, can arise within nevus sebaceous. We report the case of a 16-year-old female who had NSJ associated with trichilemmoma, which was successfully treated with cryotherapy. We found cryotherapy to be an effective, satisfactory therapy, with acceptable cosmetic results, especially for patients who have visible lesions that can be easily followed.

Biologics have been used increasingly for the treatment of severe asthma. However, established guidelines for the selection, switching, or discontinuation of biologics do not exist. We aimed to identify the clinical characteristics of patients with asthma who required switching biologics and the factors associated with switching biologics.

This was a retrospective study of 42 patients with severe asthma treated with biologics at the Hokkaido University Hospital between 23

June 2016 and 30

April 2021, when two biologics were available in Japan. We compared the characteristics of subjects who continued and switched biologics. The time to switch the biologics was assessed by type 2 inflammatory biomarkers, pulmonary function indices, and the presence of comorbidities, including the Japanese Epidemiological Survey of Refractory Eosinophilic Chronic Rhinosinusitis (JESREC) score and aspirin exacerbated respiratory diseases (AERD), using the Kaplan-Meier method and a multivariate Cox proportional hazards model.

Eight and five patients were treated by mepolizumab and benralizumab at baseline, respectively among the 31% (13/42) who switched the biologics. Subjects who required switching biologics were characterized by high blood eosinophil counts, younger age, JESREC scores of 11 points or higher, and AERD. The time taken to switch biologics was significantly shorter in the subgroups with high JESREC scores (≥11) or AERD, compared with their counterparts with low JESREC scores or without AERD (both, P < 0.05). JESREC scores of ≥11, but not the presence of AERD, were associated with time to switch biologics.

Asthma is a common chronic disease presenting with airway symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness and attacks of breathlessness. Underdiagnosis of asthma is common and correlates to negative outcomes such as a lower quality of life and reduced work capacity.

This study aims to identify factors for not being diagnosed with asthma if presenting with asthma symptoms.

A questionnaire was sent to 45,000 subjects (age 16-74 years) in Sweden. Subjects who reported both wheeze and breathlessness and wheeze when not having a cold were defined as having asthma-related symptoms. Data on demographics, educational level, smoking, physical activity, comorbidities, symptoms and asthma were collected. Logistic regression was used to identify risk factors for not being diagnosed with asthma.

Of the 25,391 who responded to the survey, 6.2% reported asthma-related symptoms. Of these, 946 had been diagnosed with asthma previously, while 632 had not. Independent risk factors for not being diagnosed with asthma were higher age (OR (95% CI) (2.17 (1.39-3.40))), male sex (1.46 (1.17-1.81)), current smoking (2.92 (2.22-3.84)), low level of education (1.43 (1.01-2.01)), low physical activity (1.36 (1.06-1.74)), and hypertension (1.50 (1.06-2.12)).

To describe the genetic landscape and clinical characteristics of Chinese patients diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and to determine which high-risk genetic characteristics suggest a likelihood of lymph node metastasis (LNM) and lateral lymph node metastasis (LLNM).

Data from previously untreated patients with PTC collected between May 2018 and December 2020 from 14 hospitals in China were analyzed retrospectively. High-risk pathologic characteristics were defined as T3/T4, N(+), and N1b(+) stages. All patients were tested for 57 genes by second-generation sequencing. The

However, diffusive samplers possess sensitivity limitations when sampling low concentrations and for short durations. To reduce these limitations, our research team has been developing a novel method of sample recovery called photothermal desorption (PTD), which uses high energy visible light pulses to desorb analytes from sampling media. Newly designed passive samplers that will use PTD will be equipped with windscreens in a similar design with the 3M OVM. In a preliminary design effort, the present work sought to find a suitable, windscreen for future use in a PTD-compatible diffusive sampler prototype that would be similar to those found in commercially available diffusive samplers. To do so, 2 stainless steel windscreens (wire diameters 0.015″ and 0.0055″ respectively) were compared to a standard windscreen by exposing modified (ie, steel mesh installed) and non-modified 3M OVM samplers to 3 analytes. To mimic in-field conditions, each sampler was exposed to analyte concentrations at their short-term and personal exposure limits (STELs and PELs). From these comparisons, it was determined that the 0.0055″ mesh was most similar to the standard windscreen in contributing to sample collection based on the uptake and concentration determinations for each analyte and concentration.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) emissions from a plastic coating industrial source in southern New Hampshire (NH) have contaminated at least 65 square miles of drinking water. Prior research indicates that high levels of PFAS are associated with a variety of adverse health outcomes, including an increased risk of cancer. Reports indicate that mean blood serum levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), one type of PFAS, in residents of the exposed community are more than 2 times greater than the mean blood serum level in the US. Merrimack public water supply customers also have higher average blood levels of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) than the time-matched US average. A 2018 report concludes that the incidence rate of cancer in Merrimack does not exceed the incidence rate of cancer in NH in general. However, prior reporting on the risk of cancer in Merrimack is compared only to a state-wide metric influenced by the Merrimack cancer incidence.

The main objective of this study was to assess the effects of coffee wastewater discharged to river water quality using physicochemical parameters and macro-invertebrate indices. This study was conducted from November to the end of December 2019. Ten wastewater and river water samples were taken from coffee the processing plant and river. The macro-invertebrate samples were collected by kick sampling technique using a standard hand net. Shannon and Simpson diversity indices were examined at 3 sampling stations.
