However, they'll have to improve their scoring on the perimeter in order to keep their high standards.

Speedy wideouts are among the biggest benefits of moving into the slot, since they have an easier time getting open downfield in the event that their route isn't blocked by a linebacker or cornerback. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list that benefits from more slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable target on short and intermediate routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the lowest of the list. They're better on intermediate and short routes, rather than deep areas. Jeudy is a solid choice for a sleeper this year as the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to be involved in more downfield targets. Hamler should be able to excel on intermediate and short-to middle routes, as that's what he excelled at in 2021 while playing for the Bills. Hamler could be a great replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The proportion of snaps a receiver plays in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to play deep routes. However, it's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's skill set since some receivers excel in the slot, but aren't able to play deep and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, for example leads the league in targets received per game (4.8) However, he's only 6th in the slot that receives scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets are from outside, and it's a challenge to get a first down in a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.

Some receivers are better playing inside, while others struggle on the outside. For example the Panthers gave Robby Anderson 978 snaps this season, and he ran an astounding 74% of his slot routes as opposed to only 26% on boundary routes. This is an enormous difference and shows just how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.

Additionally there is the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines up inside on most of his passing downs, and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is a master in one-on-1 coverage.

Speed receivers tend to be more effective when they line up inside. They can be targeted further down the field, and are often faced with one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper in the top five on our list.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also part of this group. Both have been able to generate pressures in the pass game and have McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles and Moore having the best tackle stop rate on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by placing him in the slot for nickel and dime packages and then shifting him to the outside when playing base defense. In addition, Moore's capability to stop big run plays has been a tremendous advantage when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are equally good. Wide receivers who have high slot grades have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the outside. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent with their targets when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options such as backfield passers and tight ends.

That's why it's interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 as he plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of the sets. In actuality the slot receiver is running a higher number of routes in the slot than most players listed on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to increase matchup benefits for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system.

Of course, he plays the X position and makes huge plays on the perimeter, too. Lamb isn't as powerful as the other players in this ranking but he's an elite wide receiver that is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player who's capable of putting up huge numbers on both types of targets. He has a very high slot receiver grade and is one of the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws but he's also an excellent contested-catch threat.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's been positioned in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps to date. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks who are aligned in the slot, making him a valuable part of his team's defense. He's struggled to stop passes from the outside and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This is the result of playing alongside poor linebackers and safeties who aren't able to match Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability.
