We assessed associations of 92 dietary factors with lung cancer risk in 327 790 participants in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Cox regression yielded adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) per SD higher intake/day of each food/nutrient. Correction for multiple comparisons was performed using the false discovery rate and identified associations were evaluated in the Netherlands Cohort Study (NLCS). In EPIC, 2420 incident lung cancer cases were identified during a median of 15 years of follow-up. Higher intakes of fibre (HR per 1 SD higher intake/day = 0.91, 95% CI 0.87-0.96), fruit (HR = 0.91, 95% CI 0.86-0.96) and vitamin C (HR = 0.91, 95% CI 0.86-0.96) were associated with a lower risk of lung cancer, whereas offal (HR = 1.08, 95% CI 1.03-1.14), retinol (HR = 1.06, 95% CI 1.03-1.10) and beer/cider (HR = 1.04, 95% CI 1.02-1.07) intakes were positively associated with lung cancer risk. Associations did not differ by sex and there was less evidence for associations among never smokers. This prospective, observational cohort study was conducted in 9 level I trauma centers between August 2020 and October 2021 and included adult trauma patients with abdominal SBS.

Inclusion in the study required abdominal CT as part of the initial trauma evaluation and before any surgical intervention, if performed. Irritable bowel syndrome patients report reduced disease-specific quality of life (IBSQOL). Factors of potential relevance for QOL include gastrointestinal (GI), psychological, and somatic symptoms, demographics, and GI motor and sensory abnormalities.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the relative importance of these factors on the different IBSQOL dimensions.

We included irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients who completed validated questionnaires to assess QOL, stool form and frequency, GI symptom severity, psychological distress, GI-specific anxiety, sense of coherence, and overall somatic symptom severity. Patients also underwent tests for oroanal transit time and rectal sensitivity. The nine dimensions of IBSQOL and their average (overall IBSQOL) were used as outcome variables, and factors associated with these were assessed using general linear models.

A retrospective observational cohort was used and identified from Optum's De-identified Clinformatics® Data Mart Database years 2012-2015. Three groups of women were derived based on BrCa and CIPN status BrCa+/CIPN+ (n = 244), BrCa+/CIPN- (n = 8870), and BrCa-/CIPN- (n = 1,125,711). The ratio of the prevalence ratios (RPR) determined if the change in risk of depression and anxiety from the 12-month preindex period to postindex period I (0-6months) and II (7-12 months) was different for BrCa+/CIPN+ compared to BrCa+/CIPN- and BrCa-/CIPN-.

The adjusted RPR for depression was significantly elevated for BrCa+/CIPN+ compared to BrCa+/CIPN- and BrCa-/CIPN- for postindex periods I (RPR = 1.35 [1.10,1.65] and 1.33 [1.08,1.63], respectively) and II (RPR = 1.53 [1.21,1.94] and 1.50 [1.17,1.93], respectively). Nitroxoline, a broad-spectrum biofilm-eradicating agent, was used to probe biofilm viability. Transcript profiling (RNA-seq) showed that 452 of 2594 genes (17.4%) in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) biofilms were differentially expressed after a 2 h treatment of nitroxoline. WoPPER analysis and time-course validation (RT-qPCR) revealed that gene clusters involved in iron acquisition (sbn, isd, MW2101, MW0695, fhu, and feo) were rapidly up-regulated following nitroxoline treatment, which is indicative of iron starvation in MRSA biofilms. In addition, genes related to oligopeptide transporters and riboflavin biosynthesis were found to be up-regulated, while genes related to carotenoid biosynthesis and nitrate assimilation were down-regulated. RT-qPCR experiments revealed that iron uptake transcripts were also up-regulated in established Staphylococcus epidermidis and Acinetobacter baumannii biofilms following nitroxoline treatment.
