There is little information on how POPs in eggs of different terrestrial, wetland, and aquatic birds share a large urban and rural landscape relate. We collected and analysed 64 eggs belonging to ten species of six feeding guilds, and compared organic chlorinated pesticide (OCP), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), and brominated flame retardants (BFR) residue concentrations and compositions. The eggs were collected in the Gauteng and the northern part of the Free Sate provinces of South Africa, one of the largest economic hubs in Africa. White-breasted Cormorant and African Darter eggs (at the highest trophic level as large aquatic predators) had the highest ΣOCP and ΣPCB concentrations, and Cape Sparrow and Southern Masked Weaver (granivores) eggs had the lowest concentrations, corresponding to the lowest trophic level in our collection. The highest percentage p,p'-DDT were in eggs of the terrestrial insectivore Crowned Lapwing (24%) and the scavenging African Sacred Ibis (17%), and the lowest in African Dartert POPs in different proportions and quantities in their eggs. Trophic levels and habitat explain the overall patterns, but detailed differences were found, some of which we are unable to explain. Based on POPs residues in terrestrial, wetland, and aquatic bird eggs, different POPs classes behave differently in a shared large inland industrial area, complicating deductions about POPs and associated risks based on one or few species.Medial end clavicle fractures are rare injuries and typically treated conservatively. Nonetheless, the functions and underlying mechanisms of the circular RNA circCRIM1 in osteosarcoma (OS) are still not fully understood. In this study, 47 classes of OS tissues and adjoining normal tissues were obtained from patients. Real-time PCR was employed to measure circCRIM1 expression levels in both OS tissues and cell lines. The proliferation, migration, and invasion ability in OS cell lines were measured by MTT assays, EDU assays, transwell migration experiments, and transwell invasion assays. The results demonstrated that the expression of circCRIM1 was notably decreased both in OS tissues and cell lines. Depressed circCRIM1 expression was correlated with lymph node metastasis, advanced FIGO stage, and low overall survival of OS patients. In addition, the results indicated that circCRIM1 could decrease the migration, invasion, and growth of OS cells. Further mechanistic studies indicated that circCRIM1 served as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) of miR-513, leading to decreases in the proliferation, migration, and invasion of OS cells. Taken together, our data uncovered a significant role of the circCRIM1/miR-513 pathway in the proliferation, migration, and invasion of OS cell lines and suggested that circCRIM1 may serve as a possible therapeutic target for OS treatment.

Cognitive decline is a well-documented feature of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) that can be reversible following cerebrospinal fluid tap tests (CSF-TT). The current gold standard for selecting iNPH patients for shunt surgery is measurable improvement in gait tests following CSF-TT. However, the diagnostic significance and predictive role of pre-surgical cognitive evaluations in probable iNPH patients is still controversial.

To find the neuropsychological (NPSY) tests and cognitive aspects mostly associated with shunt surgery in iNPH.

A retrospective comparison between probable iNPH patients who, after undergoing CSF-TT with gait and cognitive evaluations, ended up receiving a shunt (group 1) and probable iNPH patients who ended up with no shunt surgery (group 2). Differences in the diagnostic and predictive results of variety of NPSY tests at baseline, pre-CSF-TT, and post-CSF-TT were used for thorough statistical calculations.

Previous studies in wild canids from Brazil and Argentina demonstrated infections by species genetically related to Hepatozoon americanum. The aim of the present work was to detect the presence of Hepatozoon in road-killed foxes encountered in Uruguayan highways. Blood samples from 45 crab-eating (Cerdocyon thous) and 32 grey pampean (Lycalopex gymnocercus) foxes were analyzed by PCR for Hepatozoon 18S rRNA gene. Eight foxes (10.4%) were found to be infected with an H. americanum-like protozoan, an Hepatozoon closely related to H. americanum. Bayesian and maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analyses revealed that the sequences obtained in this study cluster with H. americanum from the United States, and with an H. americanum-like species from dog and foxes from Brazil and Argentina. In the Unites States, H. americanum causes severe disease in dogs. In addition to this, an increasing habitat overlap between dogs and foxes makes the presence of H. americanum-like protozoan in foxes acquires veterinary relevance. This work represents the first report of L. gymnocercus infected with an H. americanum-like protozoan, and of wild canids infected with Hepatozoon in Uruguay.The first etiologically confirmed cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in humans were detected in Turkey in 2002. Since then, thousands of cases have been reported from different parts of the country. Hyalomma (Hy.) marginatum is considered the main vector tick of CCHFe in Turkey, and the primary infection route for humans is known to be the tick bite. This study was carried out between January 2013 and December 2014 in Thrace, Turkey, to determine monthly prevalence and intensity of tick infestation in cattle and, ultimately, to predict the related risk of human exposure to ticks and tick-borne diseases. During the study, 1,701 cattle in 24 villages were screened for ticks; 24,012 adult ticks, 1,887 nymphs, and 766 larvae were encountered on 1,228 of these cattle. On the 1,318 cattle that routinely grazed in the daytime, Hy. marginatum was the most predominant species, with an infestation prevalence of 73.6% and an average tick intensity of 16.1 on the infested cattle. In order of prevalence (%) in the grazing cattle, Hy. marginatum was followed by Rhipicephalus (R.) bursa (32.7%), R. turanicus (%29.5), Ixodes (I.) ricinus (15.1%), Haemaphysalis (Ha.) parva (10.4%), Ha. inermis (10%), Ha. punctata (6.5%), and Dermacentor (D.) marginatus (2.3%). The obtained data were discussed in terms of the infestation characteristics of the observed tick species, the drivers that may affect these characteristics, and the features of possible relationship between Hy. marginatum infestation in the cattle and CCHF cases among humans in the area.Gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis is closely related to several metabolic diseases such as hypertension, obesity, and Alzheimer's disease. However, little is known about the causal relationship between GM dysbiosis and osteoporosis. In our work, 32 3-month-old female SD rats were randomly divided into two groups the fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) group and the control group. The supernatant of feces from senile osteoporotic rats was transplanted to the FMT group and the same amount of sterile saline was given to the control rats. After 12 and 24 weeks, all rats were sacrificed, and the serum, bone, fecal feces, and intestine tissue were collected for the subsequent analysis. The osteocalcin (OC), CTX, and P1NP of the FMT group increased significantly at 12 and 24 weeks compared with the control group (P  less then  0.05). Furthermore, the BV, BV/TV, Tb.N, and Tb.Th decreased significantly in the FMT group (P  less then  0.05). The alpha diversity (ACE, Chao) of the FMT group was higher than the control at 24 weeks (P  less then  0.05). The beta diversity was close between the FMT rats and the donor rats. In addition, GM from donor rats changed the GM composition and function of the FMT rats, which was similar to that of the donor rats at 24 weeks. The impaired intestinal structure and the decreased expression of occludin, claudin, and ZO-1 were found in FMT rats. In conclusion, GM dysbiosis by transferring the feces from senile osteoporotic rats to young rats could induce osteoporosis. Besides its role as a dNTPase, several novel cellular functions of SAMHD1 have come to light only recently, including a role as negative regulator of innate immune responses and as facilitator of DNA end resection during DNA replication and repair.
