Scabies (caused by

var.

) and pediculosis (caused by

) are infectious diseases common in educational institutions and long-term care centres. The aim of the study was to assess the scale of the phenomenon in confinement conditions favouring the spread of these parasitoses.

Data on the prevalence of scabies (2001-2015) and pediculosis (2008-2015) in Polish prisoners were provided by the Central Board of Prison Service. The information for the period between 2010 and 2015 in the Lublin Province was obtained from the District Inspectorate of the Prison Service in Lublin. Correlations between the prevalence of scabies and pediculosis and the number of prisoners were analysed, as well as correlations between the number of passes granted to prisoners and the prevalence of scabies and pediculosis in incarcerated individuals.

The prevalence of scabies and pediculosis in Polish prisoners has been estimated at 2.3% and 1.9%, respectively.

Pediculosis and scabies are still current issues in Polish prisons. Convicts returning from passes and new prisoners should be carefully examined and monitored for the presence of

Onions are an excellent dietary source of polyphenols and nutrients. However, onions phytonutrient compositions vary with cultivars and growing locations. Therefore, the present study involved the evaluation of polyphenol, nutritional composition (proteins, nitrogen, and minerals), sugars, pyruvate, antioxidant, and α-amylase inhibition activities of red onion cultivars, sweet Italian, and honeysuckle grown in California and Texas, respectively. The total flavonoid for honeysuckle and sweet Italian was 449 and 345 μg/g FW, respectively. The total anthocyanin for honeysuckle onion was 103 μg/g FW, while for sweet Italian onion was 86 μg/g FW. Cyanidin-3-(6"-malonoylglucoside) and cyanidin-3-(6"-malonoyl-laminaribioside) were the major components in both the cultivars. The pungency of red onions in honeysuckle ranged between 4.9 and 7.9 μmoL/mL, whereas in sweet Italian onion ranged from 8.3 to 10 μmoL/mL. The principal component analysis was applied to determine the most important variables that separate the cultivars of red onion. Overall results indicated that total flavonoids, total phenolic content, total anthocyanins, protein, and calories for honeysuckle onions were higher than the sweet Italian onions. These results could provide information about high quality and adding value to functional food due to the phytochemicals and nutritional composition of red onions.Excoriation disorder is a psychocutaneous disorder characterized by repetitive skin-picking and associated with significant morbidity. read more Currently, epidemiological data in patients with excoriation disorder are lacking so we sought to characterize common patient demographics and comorbidities. We conducted a retrospective case-control study comparing 250 patients with excoriation disorder with 250 age-, race- and sex-matched controls identified between 2007 and 2019 at a single tertiary care center. We found that the majority of excoriation disorder patients were female (76%), Caucasian (82%) and unmarried (62%), with a mean age of 49 years. Compared to the matched controls, patients with excoriation disorder had increased odds of several psychiatric illnesses, including obsessive compulsive disorder (odds ratio (OR) 28.48, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.68, 481.75), substance use disorder (OR 24.33, 95% CI 5.81, 101.77), post-traumatic stress disorder (OR 8.23, 95% CI 2.24, 129.40), depression (OR 8.19, 95% CI 4.86, 13.80), bipolar disorder (OR 7.55, 95% CI 2.22, 25.65), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (OR 5.63, 95% CI 1.62, 19.57), and anxiety (OR 5.01, 95% CI 2.92, 8.62). Only a minority (42%) of patients were given psychiatry referrals and of those referred, a majority (64%) did not follow-up with psychiatry. The outcomes were also generally unfavorable as only 21% of patients experienced a resolution or improvement in their symptoms. This highlights the need for a multidisciplinary approach to manage patients with excoriation disorder, involving both dermatologists and psychiatrists. The function of BRCA1/2 proteins is essential for maintaining genomic integrity in all cell types. However, why women who carry deleterious germline mutations in BRCA face an extremely high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers specifically has remained an enigma. We propose that breast-specific epigenetic modifications, which regulate tissue differentiation, could team up with BRCA deficiency and affect tissue susceptibility to cancer. In earlier work, we compared genome-wide methylation profiles of various normal epithelial tissues and identified breast-specific methylated gene promoter regions. Here, we focused on deltaNp73, the truncated isoform of p73, which possesses antiapoptotic and pro-oncogenic functions. We showed that the promoter of deltaNp73 is unmethylated in normal human breast epithelium and methylated in various other normal epithelial tissues and cell types. Accordingly, deltaNp73 was markedly induced by DNA damage in human mammary epithelial cells (HMECs) but not in other epithelial cell types. Moreover, the induction of deltaNp73 protected HMECs from DNA damage-induced cell death, and this effect was more substantial in HMECs from BRCA1 mutation carriers. Notably, when BRCA1 was knocked down in MCF10A, a non-malignant breast epithelial cell line, both deltaNp73 induction and its protective effect from cell death were augmented upon DNA damage. Interestingly, deltaNp73 induction also resulted in inhibition of BRCA1 and BRCA2 expression following DNA damage. In conclusion, breast-specific induction of deltaNp73 promotes survival of BRCA1-deficient mammary epithelial cells upon DNA damage. This might result in the accumulation of genomic alterations and allow the outgrowth of breast cancers. These findings indicate deltaNp73 as a potential modifier of breast cancer susceptibility in BRCA1 mutation carriers and may stimulate novel strategies of prevention and treatment for these high-risk women.
