Although the suppression of interface states is crucial to the overall device performance, our understanding on their formation and annihilation mechanism via direct characterization is still quite limited. Here, we present a thorough study on the interface states present in the electron transport layer (ETL) of blue quantum dot (QD) light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). A ZnO/ZnMgO bilayer ETL is adopted to enhance the electron injection into blue QDs. By probing the ETL band structure with photoelectron spectroscopy, we discover that substantial band bending exists at the ZnO/ZnMgO interface, elucidating the presence of a high density of interface states which hinder electron transport. By inserting a ZnO@ZMO interlayer composed of mixed ZnO and ZnMgO nanoparticles, the band bending and thus the interface states are observed to reduce significantly. We attribute this to the hybrid surface properties of ZnO@ZMO, which can annihilate the surface states of both the ZnO and ZnMgO layers. The introduction of a bridging layer has led to ∼40% enhancement in the power efficiency of blue QLEDs and noticeable performance boosts in green and red QLEDs. The findings here demonstrate a direct observation of interface states via detailed band structure studies and outline a potential pathway for eliminating these states for better performances in sandwich-structured devices.Untargeted metabolomics is an essential component of systems biology research, but it is plagued by a high proportion of detectable features not identified with a chemical structure. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) experiments produce spectra that can be searched against databases to help identify or classify these unknowns, but many features do not generate spectra of sufficient quality to enable successful annotation. Here, we explore alterations to gradient length, mass loading, and rolling precursor ion exclusion parameters for reversed phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) that improve compound identification performance for human plasma samples. A manual review of spectral matches from the HILIC data set was used to determine reasonable thresholds for search score and other metrics to enable semi-automated MS/MS data analysis. Compared to typical LC-MS/MS conditions, methods adapted for compound identification increased the total number of unique metabolites that could be matched to a spectral database from 214 to 2052. Following data alignment, 68.0% of newly identified features from the modified conditions could be detected and quantitated using a routine 20-min LC-MS run. Finally, a localized machine learning model was developed to classify the remaining unknowns and select a subset that shared spectral characteristics with successfully identified features. A total of 576 and 749 unidentified features in the HILIC and RPLC data sets were classified by the model as high-priority unknowns or higher-importance targets for follow-up analysis. Overall, our study presents a simple strategy to more deeply annotate untargeted metabolomics data for a modest additional investment of time and sample.A visible-light-driven multistep tandem reaction between vinyl azides and alkyl bromides has been developed leading to the formation of tetralone skeletons under mild conditions, which can be easily scaled up to the gram scale. Eight patients were managed from January 2008 to December 2018 at The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan with mean age of 36.13 ± 14.48 years. All patients had penetrating injuries, from gunshot in 5 (62.5%), bomb blast in 2 (25%), and stab wound in 1 (12.5%) case. Six (75%) patients presented in haemodynamically stable condition. The mean time between the injury and patient presentation was 28 ± 8.39 hours. The injuries were approached via supraclavicular incision in 3 (37.5%) patients, infraclavicular incisions in 2 (25%) patients and median sternotomy in 2 (25%) patients. Three (37.5%) patients had false aneurysm, while 5 (62.5%) had transected artery. Primary repair was performed in 2 (25%) cases, while 6 (75%) patients were treated with interposition graft with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). All patients have salvaged limbs with good functional outcomes. Key Words Subclavian artery, Penetrating injury, Vascular trauma, Vascular repair.An observational cohort study was performed at Neonatal Intensive Care Units of two military hospitals to see the effects of citicoline in neonates diagnosed to have moderate to severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Twenty newborns fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected for the study and were given injection citicoline via the IV route. The outcomes in the immediate newborn period, including neurological features and mortality, were studied. MCC950 Only one baby, who was given injection citicoline, died during the study period and 19 babies were discharged and sent home after establishment of oral feeds. Citicoline was found promising in treatment of newborns with moderate to severe birth asphyxia. We aimed to emphasise that some forms of TB are associated with misleading clinical and radiological manifestations. We present a retrospective study of clinical and pathological results of 10 cases with a preliminary presumptive diagnosis of thoracic malignancy. All patients were found to have TB without evidence of malignancy and were successfully treated with standard antibiotherapy after completion of diagnostic procedures. TB should be considered as a noteworthy differential diagnosis in patients living in TB-endemic countries, and biopsy plays a vital role in correctly diagnosing TB. Key Words Mass, Neoplasm, Pulmonary, Tuberculosis.Nasal septal defects may present with no clinical symptoms to dryness, nasal obstruction, pain, mucosal injury, crusting, epistaxis, rhinorrhea, nasal twang in speech, hyposmia, and breathing difficulties. Prosthetic rehabilitation of these defects may lead to improvement in these conditions. This case report describes the construction of a custom-made two-piece, magnet-retained nasal prosthesis fabricated in heat-cured acrylic resin. Intra-nasal and extra-nasal alginate impressions were splinted with soft plaster. Sequential model pouring was done for convenient access to the complicated intra-nasal anatomy. Two individual nasal stent waxups, containing two magnets with opposing poles facing each other, were well adapted to their respective medial nasal walls and anterior retentive rounded tips. Waxups were processed in heat-cured acrylic resin and delivered after finishing and polishing. Patient's symptoms were relieved, while maintaining the nasal patency. Such inexpensive method with a tissue-friendly material may prove beneficial for rehabilitation of larger nasal septal defects. Morphologically, these closely resemble the actual actinomycotic granules. Actinomyces are infectious organisms that require treatment; whereas, PAMRAGs do not require a specific treatment since they are not infectious. Here, we describe a previously unreported case of these granules in the hand. A 56-year woman was admitted with soft mass on the dorsal aspect of her right hand. Peroperatively, lesion was detected in the extensor digitorum communis. Histopathological examination revealed an appearance that resembled actinomyces. Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining was not positive for actinomyces. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining showed radially arranged refractile granules with thick, irregular club-like eosinophilic character without a central core. Thus, actinomycosis was ruled out and a diagnosis of PAMRAGs was made. Differentiating PAMRAGs from actual actinomycotic infections is crucial for the treatment. Pathologists should be familiar with the presence and appearance of PAMRAGs to avoid misdiagnosis of actinomycosis and prevent unnecessary antibiotic use. These are very rare in adults, especially in a non-valvular location. Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) typically presents with multiple bilateral renal cysts, resulting in chronic kidney disease. Whilst many of the extra-renal manifestations of ADPKD are well-documented, associated cardiac masses are extremely rare and cardiac blood cyst has not been reported in a patient with APKD to date. We present a 57-year man with a history of ADPKD and end-stage renal disease with a 2-cm-diameter right ventricular blood cyst, which was detected on multimodality imaging. Key words Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, Cardiac blood cyst, Extra-renal manifestations.Adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) are adrenal masses discovered as incidental finding, often on imaging studies, unrelated to adrenal disorders. Sometimes, they are discovered as part of work-up for adrenal pathology. AIs are mostly nonfunctional (hormonally silent), but can also be functional (hormonally active). The differential diagnosis includes many primary, metastatic, benign and malignant conditions. The current case is a young male, who went to a peripheral health facility with complaints of dysuria and burning micturition. His laboratory and radiological investigations suggested a urinary tract infection with an incidental finding of adrenal mass. After referral, his detailed work-up was done at Endocrine Clinic of Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Rawalpindi, which revealed history of episodic headaches and palpitations with paroxysmal spikes of high blood pressure up to 200/120 mmHg. Adrenalectomy was performed by laparoscopic surgery. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma with PASS score of 5/20. This is one of the rare cases of adrenal incidentaloma, often an autopsy finding. link3 Pheochromocytoma needs to be investigated in all cases of AIs. Key Words Adrenal incidentaloma, Pheochromocytoma, Urinary tract infection.Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) with respiratory distress type 1 (SMARD1) is an exceptionally rare type of SMA. It results from disintegration of alpha motor neurons of the spinal cord. Clinically, children affected with this disorder present between the age of six weeks to six months with respiratory distress and hypotonia. Most of the children die before the age of 13 months. Here, we report a new variant in a female infant with SMARD1 having a novel IGHMBP2 gene mutation. Despite supportive treatment, she died at the age of 5 months in hospital. To the best of our knowledge, the variant has not been described in the literature so far.
