The linear discriminative analysis effect size (LEfSe) identified the cyanobacterial genus Cyanobium PCC-6307 as the main variable between summer and winter water. Sequences representing human and animal potential pathogens, as well as toxin-producing Cyanobacteria, were identified in low abundance within the Nile microbiome. Functionally predicted metabolic pathways predicted the presence of antibiotic biosynthesis, as well as aerobic xenobiotic degradation pathways in the river microbiome.Gyrodactylus spp. are common monogenean ectoparasites that may lead to significant fish mortality. To find effective anthelmintic agents with lower toxicity, a series of natural saponins were obtained and evaluated for their anthelmintic activity against Gyrodactylus kobayashii and acute toxicity to goldfish (Carassius auratus). Among all tested compounds, six compounds (1, 2, 3, 8, 10, and 13) shown higher anthelmintic activity and safety than widely used formaldehyde-based parasiticides, especially compound 1 having 100% anthelmintic efficacy against G. kobayashii at 0.3 mg/L and a therapeutic index of 16.6. Also, the three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) studies of these saponins have been performed to explore the structural features reasonable for the anthelmintic activity against G. kobayashii. These models demonstrated that the hydroxyl group at C-17 position and the sugar moieties at C-3 position, especially the hydroxyl groups of the sugar moieties, were critical to the anthelmintic activity. The QSAR studies could provide useful information for further rational design and optimization of novel saponins for the control of gyrodactylosis.Pulmonary toxoplasmosis is rare in immunocompetent patients. Herein, a Toxoplasma gondii strain isolated in Brazil from an immunocompetent patient who had severe pulmonary involvement was biologically and molecularly characterized for the first time. The TgHumIMTBr1 isolate was bioassayed in mice showing a virulent phenotype. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) genotyping using 11 markers [SAG1, SAG2 (5´3´SAG2 and alt. SAG2), SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29-2, L358, PK1, Apico and CS3] revealed a new non-archetypal genotype assigned as #312. Genotyping using ROP18/ROP5 markers exhibited the virulent combination of alleles 4 and 1. Microsatellite analysis using 15 markers (TUB2, W35, TgM-A, B18, B17, M33, IV.1, X1.1, N60, N82, AA, N61, N83, M48 and M102) revealed an atypical genotype with three unique alleles and a rare combination of alleles 246 (W35) and 203 (TgM-A) that is typical of the Amazon region. Non-archetypal genotypes with unique alleles may function in the occurrence of severe toxoplasmosis in immunocompetent patients in Brazil. Attempts to isolate or molecularly detect T. gondii for further genotyping studies would contribute to the understanding of causes related to the severity of toxoplasmosis in immunocompetent patients. In nature, parasitic infections must be addressed as complex systems involving parasite-host relationships on a temporal and spatial scale. Since the parasites cover a great biological diversity, we can expect that wildlife are exposed simultaneously to different parasites. In this sense, the objective of this work was to determine the relationships between free-living mammals and their associated hemoparasites in the Brazilian Pantanal. We used the data published during 2017 and 2018 by de Sousa et al. regarding the detection of vector-borne pathogens (VBP), namely Anaplasma, Babesia, Bartonella, Cytauxzoon, Ehrlichia, Hepatozoon, Mycoplasma, and Theileria, in nine species of free-living mammals belonging to orders Carnivora, Rodentia, and Didelphimorphia. Dihydroartemisinin cost We assume as infected an individual positive on any of parasitological, molecular, and/or serological tests. We observed a strong association between the wild felid Leopardus pardalis with Cytauxzoon, the wild canid Cerdocyon thous with Hepatozoon, the small rodent Thrichomys fosteri with Bartonella, and the procyonid Nasua nasua with Mycoplasma and Theileria. Therefore, N. nasua, C. thous, T. fosteri, and the small rodent Oecomys mamorae can be considered key species for the maintenance of selected VBP in the Pantanal region, because they showed a high number of single and coinfections. Together, our results highlighted the importance of coinfection as a common phenomenon in nature.Two-dimensional (2D) MoS2core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized using an eco-friendly surface functionalization-agent with L-glutathione and cystamine (L-GSH-MoS2-CYS) using ultrasonic frequency of 20-25 kHz. The novel modified electrode was evaluated for the electrochemical detection of doxorubicin (DOX), through cyclic and differential pulse voltammetric techniques. The electro-catalytic oxidation currents of DOX exhibited a linear relationship in the concentration ranges 0.1-78.3 and 98.3-1218 μM, with a detection limit of 31 nM. A sensitivity of 0.017μA μM-1 cm-2 was acquired at 0.48 V. The fabricated L-GSH-MoS2-CYS modified electrode showed excellent precision, selectivity, repeatability, and reproducibility during the determination of DOX levels in blood serum samples. Thus, the fabricated L-GSH-MoS2-CYS/GCE modified electrode has potential for clinical applications for optimization of chemotherapeutic drugs owing to its selectivity, ease of preparation, and long-term stability. Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the axial skeleton and typically has an early onset. Although earlier onset is associated with worse prognosis, there have been few studies of bone mineral density (BMD) in adolescent patients with axSpA.

We analysed the clinical characteristics of 43 adolescent patients with axSpA at a baseline assessment and at a follow-up 2 years later. The baseline assessment included age, disease duration, treatment agents, and clinical, radiologic, and laboratory data. BMD of the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry during both the baseline assessment and the 2-year follow-up. We performed multivariate linear regression analyses to identify factors independently associated with BMD. We analysed the associations between changes in BMD and reductions in inflammatory markers.

The average age of participants was 17.9 years and the mean disease duration was 2.2 years. Of the 43 patients, 10 (23%) had low BMD at any site (lumbar spine, femoral neck, and/or total hip).
