In addition, a model food-system experiment showed that 1-octen-3-ol at 98 μL/L exhibited an efficacy of 100% after 7 days of fumigation and completely eliminated T. castaneum offspring. Although a higher concentration of 1-octen-3-ol was needed to achieve an efficacy equal to that of the positive control, dichlorvos (DDVP), 1-octen-3-ol promoted the seedling growth of wheat seeds, suggesting that the concentration used was not only acceptable but also beneficial for wheat seeds. Overall, 1-octen-3-ol seems to be a promising candidate for use as a fumigant and repellent against T. castaneum as well as a seed protectant. The surge in solid waste (SW) has become major issues in the fields of public health and ecological environment fuelled by the rapid development of social economy. The fate of nitrogen contained in SW (SWN) varies with different treatment methods, which will affect the environment to varying degrees. It is of great practical and guiding significance to comprehensively evaluate the sources, fate and its cascading effects of SWN. Here, a systematic SWN flow evaluation of the generation, treatment and emissions in China from 2008 to 2017 was established. During this period, the SWN flow and the N pollution emissions from SW treatment increased by 19.7% and 27.6% respectively, with the domestic garbage being the largest contributor. This shows that it is particularly important to reinforce the classified of domestic garbage and resource recycling in China. Landfill was the main treatment, accounting for 51.8% of the total SWN. Landfill and incineration were the main sources of pollution N emissions, while compost treatment has the lowest contribution rate. It highlights the urgency of changing the waste treatment methods in China. Sabutoclax About 92.3% of the N pollution emissions was lost to the atmosphere and 7.7% to the groundwater. NH3 and NOx were the main pollutants to the atmosphere. Special attention is paid to the reduction and control of NH3 in landfill, dumping and compost processes, while NOx in incineration. This study provides scientific basis for management and disposal of SW, so as to reduce its impact on the ecological environment and develop more sustainable policies for China and other developing countries.Modern agricultural practices are often based on the use of mixtures of specific herbicides to achieve efficient crop protection. The major drawbacks of commercial herbicidal formulations include the necessity to incorporate toxic surfactants and high volatility of active substances. Transformation of herbicides into herbicidal ionic liquids (HILs) seems to be a promising alternative which allows to almost completely reduce volatility due to ionic interactions. In the scope of this research, we transformed (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy)acetic acid (MCPA) into a quaternary ester (esterquat) with the use of derivatives of 2-dimethylaminoethanol. The obtained esterquats were later coupled with (±)-2-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)propionic acid (MCPP) in the form of an anion. The combination of MCPA and MCPA is commonly applied in the UK, EU countries and also in the USA to increase the spectrum of targeted weed species. In the framework of this study, novel HILs with an esterquat moiety incorporating a long alkyl chain (C8, C9, C10, C11, C12, C14) were prepared and characterized in terms of basic physicochemical properties (solubility and volatility) as well as biodegradability. Their phytotoxicity was assessed towards cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) as a model weed and maize (Zea mays) as a crop plant. The presence of the esterquat cation contributed to satisfactory solubility in water and other low polar solvents, which eliminates the need to add exogenous adjuvants. Further experiments indicated that the tested HILs stimulated the germination stage of maize and maintained high herbicidal activity towards cornflower. No significant differences in terms of properties were observed in case of HILs which included alkyl substituents with an odd number of carbon atoms. Future studies should be focused on structural modifications in order to improve the biodegradability as well as field studies for evaluation of commercial applications.Accidental spills are pervasive pollution in aquatic ecosystems. Resorting to chemical dispersant is one of the most implemented strategies in response to oil spills, but it results in an increase in the bio-availability of oil compounds known to disturb fish neurosensory capacities and hence fish habitat use. While it has become well established that acute oil exposure can cause a range of physiological defects, sub-lethal consequences on animal behaviour have only received recent attention. Here we investigated the effect of an exposure to a 62 h- dispersant treated oil on the exploration tendency (exploratory activity, and avoidance of unfamiliar open areas) of juvenile European sea bass. Three different concentrations of chemically dispersed oil were tested, low and medium conditions bracketing the range of likely situations that fish encounter following an oil spill, the high dose representing a more severe condition. Fish recovery capacities were also evaluated during 2 weeks post-exposure. Our results suggest a dose-response relationship; the low dose (0.048 ± 0.007 g L-1 of total petroleum hydrocarbons ([TPH])) had no effect on sea bass behavioural response to a novel environment while medium (0.243 ± 0.012 g L-1 [TPH]) and high (0.902 ± 0.031 g L-1 [TPH]) doses altered fish exploratory activity and their typical avoidance of unfamiliar open areas. Our experiment also suggest signs of recovery capacities in the first 10 days following oil exposure even if fish might need more time to fully recover from observed alterations. We discuss the possibility that observed alterations may result from a neurosensory or physiological known defects of oil exposure, causing anaesthetic-like sedative behaviours. Altogether, this study shows that juvenile sea bass exposed to oil spill exhibit transient behavioural impairments that may have major population-level consequences given the high mortality experienced by juveniles.
