The PCBs were not, however, associated with longer-term breast cancer-specific mortality. For all-cause mortality, one-ln unit increases in PCB118, PCB146, PCB153, PCB182, PCB187, and total PCBs were associated with 20-37% increases in 20-year all-cause mortality rates among women who survived at least 5 years. CONCLUSION PCBs may increase the risk of short-term breast cancer-specific mortality and long-term all-cause mortality among women with breast cancer. Embryonic neural stem cells (NSCs), comprising neuroepithelial and radial glial cells, are indispensable precursors of neurons and glia in the mammalian developing brain. Since the process of neurogenesis occurs in a hypoxic environment, the question arises of how NSCs deal with low oxygen tension and whether it affects their stemness. Genes from the hypoxia-inducible factors (HIF) family are well known factors governing cellular response to hypoxic conditions. In this study, we have discovered that the endogenous stabilization of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (Hif1α) during neural induction is critical for the normal development of the NSCs pool by preventing its premature depletion and differentiation. The knock-out of the Hif1α gene in mESC-derived neurospheres led to a decrease in self-renewal of NSCs, paralleled by an increase in neuronal differentiation. Similarly, neuroepithelial cells differentiated in hypoxia exhibited accelerated neurogenesis soon after Hif1α knock-down. In both models, the loss of Hif1α was accompanied by an immediate drop in neural repressor Hes1 levels while changes in Notch signaling were not observed. We found that active Hif1α/Arnt1 transcription complex bound to the evolutionarily conserved site in Hes1 gene promoter in both neuroepithelial cells and neural tissue of E8.5 - 9.5 embryos. Taken together, these results emphasize the novel role of Hif1α in the regulation of early NSCs population through the activation of neural repressor Hes1, independently of Notch signaling. In strawberry, sucrose is the major form of carbohydrate translocated from the leaves to the fruits and plays an important role in fruit ripening. As a conserved energy sensor, sucrose nonfermenting-1 (SNF1)-related kinase 1 (SnRK1) plays an important role in plant carbon metabolism. However, evidence that SnRK1 regulates sucrose accumulation in fruits is lacking. In this study, we transiently expressed FaSnRK1α in strawberry fruits and found that overexpression (OE) of the FaSnRK1α gene significantly increased the sucrose content, whereas repression of FaSnRK1α by RNA interference (RNAi) decreased the sucrose content. Further analysis revealed that FaSnRK1α increased the expression of FaSUS1 and FaSUS3 as well as the activity of sucrose synthase (SUS; EC 2.4.1.13) and that FaSPS1 expression and sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS; EC 2.4.1.14) activity were strongly downregulated, which decreased the accumulation of sucrose. However, the expression of FaSPS3, which is reported to contribute to sucrose accumulation, was induced by FaSnRK1α, and FaNI expression and invertase (INV; EC 3.2.1.26) activity were upregulated by FaSnRK1α. In addition, FaSnRK1α positively upregulated the expression of the sucrose transporter (SUT) genes FaSUT1 and FaSUT5 and interacted with FaSUS1, FaSPS1 and FaSPS3 proteins but not with FaSUS3, FaNI, FaSUT1 or FaSUT5 proteins. Overall, FaSnRK1α systematically regulates the expression of the genes and activities of key enzymes involved in the sucrose metabolic pathway and promotes the long-distance transport of sucrose, thereby increasing sucrose accumulation and ultimately promoting fruit ripening. VX970 INTRODUCTION Primary cardiac angiosarcoma is rare, and its prognosis remains poor. Complete surgical resection is the first choice among the available treatments, to ensure prolonged patient survival. PRESENTATION OF CASE We report the case of a 72-year-old man with right atrial angiosarcoma who presented with bloody pericardial effusion due to tumor hemorrhaging. Emergency surgery was performed. The right atrial free wall and vena cava were reconstructed with pedicled autologous pericardium. The patient died 12 months later because of multiple organ failure due to metastasis. Autopsy showed a maintained right atrial chamber and only mild calcification. DISCUSSION Pedicled autologous pericardium may have contributed to preserving cardiac function that could withstand chemotherapy and radiotherapy. CONCLUSION Pedicled autologous pericardium was found to be useful for reconstructing the cardiac chamber after removal of a cardiac tumor. INTRODUCTION A parameatal urethral cyst is a rare finding in an otherwise well child. They can present as either congenital malformations or as a finding later in life, and may occur either unilaterally or bilaterally on the glans penis. Though they are benign, possible complications include impaired urinary stream flow, dysuria, or hindered cosmesis. PRESENTATION OF CASE We report a spontaneous resolution of large congenital parameatal cyst in an otherwise healthy neonate whose mother had a recent history of urinary tract infection. A spontaneous resolution of the cyst was reported at the age of one month. DISCUSSION A small parameatal cysts have shown spontaneous resolution approximately 25% of the time. Treatment options should not include aspiration or marsupialization as many cases have shown recurrence. The role of antenatal infection in development of parameatal cyst not yet been determined. CONCLUSION A large parameatal cyst could resolve spontaneously, routine observation recommended for majority of cases. INTRODUCTION With the rising burden of obesity, bariatric surgery is becoming more common as a treatment option. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is considered safe and effective and is a popular procedure in Australia. However there are recognised complications to be aware of such as band erosion which can lead to infection and abscess formation. PRESENTATION OF CASE A 59-year-old caucasian female presented with fevers, rigors and feeling generally unwell. She was previously fit and well with her only past medical history being LAGB 14 years prior. Clinically the patient was in septic shock and required intensive care admission for inotropic support. On investigations the CRP was 227 and abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a splenic abscess. Follow up upper gastrointestinal endoscopy diagnosed an eroded gastric band in the stomach. The patient proceeded to laparoscopy, a gastrotomy was performed and the band was removed. The splenic abscess was concurrently drained and the patient treated with an extended course of intravenous and oral antibiotics.
