Significantly, this study provides insight into the design of new generation AGAs to circumvent the emergence of drug-resistant pathogens.

The invasive mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis, has caused serious damage to cotton crops throughout the world. Aenasius bambawalei is a dominant endoparasitoid of P. solenopsis. Exploration of behaviorally active semiochemicals may promote the efficacy of parasitoids used in biological control. Reverse chemical ecology, based on the physiological function of odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), provides an effective approach to screen behaviorally active compounds to target insect pests. Determination of the binding mechanisms and specificity towards different odorants in A. bambawalei may facilitate the development of more-efficient biological control strategies.

We characterized the expression profile and analyzed the binding affinity of OBP28 in A. bambawalei. AbamOBP28 showed high expression in the wings and antennae of both male and female A. bambawalei. A fluorescence competitive binding assay indicated that AbamOBP28 displayed strong binding affinity to most candidate ligands. Circular dichroism spectr identified protein provides a potential target for efficient enemy utilization and pest control, and the overall results may help develop protocols for more effective screening of behaviorally active semiochemicals. Here, we systematically explored the evolution of boron cluster on Ag(111) surface, BN @Ag(111) (N=1∼36), to understand the nucleation of 2D boron sheet on metal surface. Our calculation showed that, with the size increasing, the structures of most stable BN clusters undergo an evolution from compact triangular lattice, such as double-chains or triple-chains, to the ones with mixed triangular-hexagonal lattices. The first single-HH appears at N=12 and the first double-HH appears at N=27. The stability of large BN clusters with mixed structures is derived from the charge transfer between triangular lattice and the HHs, as well as between the substrates and the BN clusters. Our results provide a deep understanding on the formation of small boron clusters in the initial nucleation stage of borophene growth.Priming, an inducible stress defence strategy that prepares an organism for an impending stress event, is common in microbes and has been studied mostly in isolated organisms or populations. How the benefits of priming change in the microbial community context and, vice versa, whether priming influences competition between organisms, remain largely unknown. In this study, we grew different isolates of soil fungi that experienced heat stress in isolation and pairwise competition experiments and assessed colony extension rate as a measure of fitness under priming and non-priming conditions. Based on this data, we developed a cellular automaton model simulating the growth of the ascomycete Chaetomium angustispirale competing against other fungi and systematically varied fungal response traits to explain similarities and differences observed in the experimental data. We showed that competition changes the priming benefit compared with isolated growth and that it can even be reversed depending on the competitor's traits such as growth rate, primeability and stress susceptibility. With this study, we transfer insights on priming from studies in isolation to competition between species. This is an important step towards understanding the role of inducible defences in microbial community assembly and composition. To assess the toxicity of residual marbofloxacin from animal-derived food, the interaction characteristics of marbofloxacin to bovine/human serum albumins (BSA/HSA) were explored using spectroscopic methods combined with molecular modelling. According to fluorescence spectra and time-resolved fluorescence spectra measurements, quenching of BSA/HSA fluorescence induced by marbofloxacin was characterized as static quenching. A 11 ground-state complex of marbofloxacin to BSA/HSA was formed with binding constant (Ka ) 1.66 × 104 /9.74 × 103 M-1 at 291 K. The location of marbofloxacin binding at site I within BSA/HSA was clarified by site marker competitive experiments. Molecular modelling demonstrated that the binding region for marbofloxacin to BSA and HSA were at site I with the lowest binding free energies of -22.86 and -21.60 kJ mol-1 , respectively. Hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces were dominantly involved in the spontaneous binding. Nonradiation energy transferred from BSA and HSA to marbofloxacin, due to the close distance (r0 ) between marbofloxacin and Trp residues of BSA (4.28 nm) and HSA (3.34 nm). As explained by circular dichroism (CD) spectra, an increased BSA/HSA α-helix structure was observed after binding to marbofloxacin. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra suggested that conformation of the two proteins was altered by marbofloxacin.

Tenvermectin A is a new avermectin derivative that has good insecticidal and acaricidal effects. In order to study the resistance of Plutella xylostella to tenvermectin A, a sensitive strain (SS) and a laboratory-selected tenvermectin A-resistant strain (RS, 33.57-fold) were used to evaluate cross-resistance and fitness costs as well as to determine the resistance mechanism.

There was no cross-resistance with common pesticides except for moderate cross-resistance with cypermethrin (resistance ratio = 10.26-fold) observed in RS. The activities of metabolic enzymes were measured, and the results showed that mixed function oxidase (MFO) and carboxylate esterase (CarE) in RS increased significantly by 2.92- and 2.86-fold, respectively, compared with SS. In addition, there was no obvious difference in glutathione-S-transferase (GST), which indicated that enhanced MFO and CarE activities may be the main mechanisms of detoxification. In the four typical resistance-related genes, expression of GluCl (4.86-fold), ABCC2 (3.
