Mean blood loss of the TXA group was significantly lower than that of the non-TXA group (2.4 L and 4.5 L, respectively; p<0.001). In this study, we present our 10-year postoperative follow-up results of Sanat Swing® and NexGen® total knee implants.

A total of 189 patients (93 males, 96 females; mean age 68 years; range, 48 to 86 years) who underwent total knee replacement between January 2008 and September 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 105 patients (Group A) were implanted a cemented Sanat Swing knee prosthesis and 84 patients (Group B) were implanted a cemented NexGen knee prosthesis. Operation time, range of motion (ROM), pain level, Knee Society Score (KSS), distance of painless walking, and the ability to climb stairs were evaluated between the groups.

The mean follow-up was 10.8 (range, 9.8 to 12.3) years. No significant difference was observed in the survival of the prostheses, ROM, pain level, KSS, walking distance, and in the ability to climb stairs between the two groups at 10 years. With an experienced team, the operation time was about 4 to 5 min shorter in the Sanat Swing implantation group. In selected cases, Sanat Swing was superior to the NexGen system; however, there was no statistically significant difference. Complication rates were also low and comparable between both groups.

Based on the 10 years of follow-up evaluation, Sanat Swing total knee replacement system seems to yield comparable clinical results with the NexGen. Experiences with the operative technique and comparative evaluation, the Sanat Swing system is a safe and reliable alternative for total knee replacement, providing a user-friendly operative technique and shorter operation time.

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of a screening questionnaire to identify high-risk patients for novel coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) among those undergoing elective orthopedic surgery.

Between May 4th, 2020 and June 11th, 2020, a total of 1,021 consecutive patients (492 males, 529 females; mean age 62.3±15.1 years; range, 13 to 91 years) who were scheduled for elective orthopedic surgery were included. A screening questionnaire was applied to all patients. The patients admitted to hospital were also tested for COVID-19 infection through reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction of the nasopharyngeal swab.

Of the patients, 1,003 (98.2%) underwent elective surgery as planned. The screening questionnaire classified 30 patients as high-risk for COVID-19. A total of 18 procedures (n=18, 1.8%) were postponed due to the high risk of possible transmission of COVID-19. None of 991 low-risk patients were tested positive for COVID-19.

PIN1 binds to a subset of proteins and plays an essential role in regulating protein function post-phosphorylation control. Furthermore, the activity of PIN1 regulates the outcome of the signalling of proline-directed kinases (e.g. MAPK, CDK, or GSK3) and thus regulates cell proliferation and cell survival. For these reasons, PIN1 inhibitors are interesting since they may have therapeutic implications for cancer. Several authors have already reported that the non-structural point mutation Trp34Ala prevents PIN1 from interacting with its downstream effector proteins. In this work, we characterized PIN1 structurally, intending to explore new inhibition targets for the rational design of pharmacological activity compounds. Through a conformational diversity analysis of PIN1, we identified and characterized a highly specific druggable pocket around the residue Trp34. This pocket was used in a high-throughput docking screening of 450,000 drug-like compounds, and the top 10 were selected for re-docking studies on the previously used conformers. Finally, we evaluated the binding of each compound by thermal shift assay and found four molecules with a high affinity for PIN1 and potential inhibitory activity. Through this strategy, we achieved novel drug candidates with the ability to interfere with the phosphorylation-dependent actions of PIN1 and with potential applications in the treatment of cancer.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.This study examined the traditional gender norms and beliefs held by orphaned adolescent boys and girls, and the role of such norms and beliefs on their academic performance. Data from a NIMH-funded study known as Suubi-Maka in Uganda were analyzed. Results indicate that overall, adolescents held strong gendered norms and beliefs that favor males over females. Compared to boys, girls were more likely to report more egalitarian gender norms and beliefs that give equal consideration to both girls and boys. In addition, more egalitarian gender norms and beliefs were associated with better school grades.
