This paper reports on the re-engineering of standard five-strand tundish designs into a five-strand asymmetric tundish, which resulted in a non-uniform rate and bias for each strand. We sought to improve the casting conditions by optimizing the liquid steel flow-field in the tundish. Both a water modelling experiment and a numerical simulation were performed to analyze the flow-field according to various diversion hole diameters and injection angles. The results showed that the average residence time decreased as the diameter of the diversion holes increased. As the injection angle was increased, the average residence time initially decreased and then increased. The liquid steel from the ladle shroud rapidly extended to the #2 and #3 strands in the original tundish, which reduced the likelihood of inclusion collision and coalescence.Experiences of homelessness, although widely varied, are characterized by extensive time in public spaces, often outdoors. #link# However, there has been little empirical research about the ways in which environmental factors affect individuals experiencing homelessness (IEHs). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to use an environmental justice approach to understand how cardiopulmonary health of IEHs is affected by episodic poor air quality in Salt Lake County. It was hypothesized that people who had experienced unsheltered homelessness and those who had been experiencing homelessness for longer periods of time would report greater health difficulties from poor air quality exposure. Through a combination of in-person semistructured interviews with IEHs (n = 138) and access to corresponding state-based service provider databases, researchers examined both overall descriptives of and relationships between types (sheltered and unsheltered) and duration (chronic and nonchronic) of homelessness. More than 61% of IEHs reported physical reactions to air pollution, 37% reported air pollution-related emotional stress, and more than 89% had sought medical attention for a condition related to air pollution. Findings indicate that while IEHs report a number of health effects related to poor air quality, there were no significant differences between individuals based on either sheltered status or duration of their experiences of homelessness. This study provides an initial empirical inquiry to understand how environmental disamenities negatively influence IEHs, as well as noting that sheltered status and duration of homelessness are less impactful than originally hypothesized.This cross-sectional study determined whether various factors, such as parental behavior, attitude, and knowledge and sibling and peer behaviors, were associated with smoking and drinking among early adolescents in the Republic of Vanuatu. For this purpose, logistic regression analysis was used to determine the relative importance of the factors as well as the influences of the parents/guardians, siblings, and peers. The participants consisted of 157 seventh- and eighth-grade adolescents (mean age = 13.3 years; 52.2% girls), including their parents/guardians, from three public schools in Vanuatu. According to the results, the proportions of smokers and drinkers among the adolescents were 12.7% each, while the majority of the parents/guardians disapproved of underage smoking and drinking. link2 In addition, peer influences (i.e., regularly smoking and/or drinking and offering tobacco and/or alcohol) was significantly associated with ever smoking and drinking, whereas parental and sibling influences did not have a significant impact on ever smoking and drinking. In sum, being given tobacco or alcohol from peers had the strongest association with ever smoking and drinking among the adolescents in this study. Thus, future school-based intervention programs should focus on enhancing early adolescents' life skills, including the ability to resist offers of tobacco and/or alcohol from their peers.In addition to the well-known diterpenoid steviol glycosides, Stevia rebaudiana (Stevia) produces many labdane-type diterpenoids and a wide range of mono- and sesquiterpenoids. However, biosynthesis of mono- and sesquiterpenoids in Stevia remains unknown. Here we analyzed the extracts of Stevia leaves, flowers, stems, and roots by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry and putatively identified a total of 69 volatile organic compounds, most of which were terpenoids with considerably varied quantities among the four tissues of Stevia. Using Stevia transcriptomes, we identified and functionally characterized five terpene synthases (TPSs) that produced major mono- and sesquiterpenoids in Stevia. Transcript levels of these Stevia TPSs and levels of corresponding terpenoids correlated well in Stevia tissues. Particularly, the root-specific SrTPS4 and SrTPS5 catalyzed the formation of γ-curcumene/zingiberene/β-sesquiphellandrene and α-longipinene/β-himachalene/himachalol as multifunctional sesqui-TPSs, respectively. Most of the SrTPSs were highly responsive to various environmental stresses in a tissue-specific manner. Consequently, the availability of glucose can impact on T cell function. The glucose concentrations used in conventional culture media and common metabolic assays are often artificially high, representing hyperglycaemic levels rarely present in vivo. We show here that reducing glucose concentration to physiological levels in culture differentially impacted on virus-specific compared to generically activated human CD8 T cell responses. In virus-specific T cells, limiting glucose availability significantly reduced the frequency of effector-cytokine producing T cells, but promoted the upregulation of CD69 and CD103 associated with an increased capacity for tissue retention. In contrast the functionality of generically activated T cells was largely unaffected and these showed reduced differentiation towards a residency phenotype. Furthermore, T cells being cultured at physiological glucose concentrations were more susceptible to viral infection. This setting resulted in significantly improved lentiviral transduction rates of primary cells. We compared the completion rate, sensitivity and diagnostic yield for polyp detection from CCE and CTC following IC. A systematic literature search resulted in twenty-six studies. Extracted data included inter alia, complete/incomplete investigations and polyp findings. Pooled estimates of completion rates of CCE and CTC and complete colonic view rates (CCE reaching the most proximal point of IC) of CCE were calculated. Per patient diagnostic yields of CCE and CTC were calculated stratified by polyp sizes. CCE completion rate and complete colonic view rate were 76% (CI 95% 68-84%) and 90% (CI 95% 83-95%). CTC completion rate was 98% (CI 95% 96-100%). Diagnostic yields of CTC and CCE were 10% (CI 95% 7-15%) and 37% (CI 95% 30-43%) for any size, 13% (CI 95% 9-18%) and 21% (CI 95% 12-32%) for >5-mm and 4% (CI 95% 2-7%) and 9% (CI 95% 3-17%) for >9-mm polyps. No study performed a reference standard follow-up after CCE/CTC in individuals without findings, rendering sensitivity calculations unfeasible. The increased diagnostic yield of CCE could outweigh its slightly lower complete colonic view rate compared to the superior CTC completion rate. Hence, CCE following IC appears feasible for an introduction to clinical practice. Therefore, randomized studies investigating CCE and/or CTC following incomplete colonoscopy with a golden standard reference for the entire population enabling estimates for sensitivity and specificity are needed.Osteoclastogenesis required for bone remodeling is also a key pathologic mechanism of inflammatory osteolysis being controlled by paracrine factors released from dying cells. The secretome of irradiated, dying peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) has a major impact on the differentiation of myeloid cells into dendritic cells, and macrophage polarization. The impact on osteoclastogenesis, however, has not been reported. For this aim, we used murine bone marrow macrophages exposed to RANKL and M-CSF to initiate osteoclastogenesis, with and without the secretome obtained from γ-irradiated PBMCs. We reported that the secretome significantly enhanced in vitro osteoclastogenesis as determined by means of histochemical staining of the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), as well as the expression of the respective target genes, including TRAP and cathepsin K. Considering that TGF-β enhanced osteoclastogenesis, we confirmed the TGF-β activity in the secretome with a bioassay that was based on the increased expression of IL11 in fibroblasts.
