The transition period, from pregnancy to lactation, implies comprehensive metabolic and endocrine changes including a systemic inflammatory reaction and oxidative stress around calving in dairy cows. The aim of the present study was a longitudinal characterization of the serum concentration of acute phase proteins (APP), i.e., haptoglobin (Hp), serum amyloid A (SAA) and acidic glycoprotein (AGP), as well as of markers for oxidative stress in another large dairy animal, i.e. water buffalo, during the transition from late pregnancy to early lactation. As indicators of oxidative status, derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (dROM), ferric reducing ability (FRAP), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) were determined in serum. Indicators for metabolic stress included nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and adiponectin. Bovine specific ELISA methods for Hp and adiponectin were adapted and validated for their application to water bg with time, whereas greater NEFA and BHB values were observed ap than pp. The time course of NEFA and of some indicators for oxidative status (dROM, OSi and AOPP) point to greater metabolic load in late pregnancy as compared with the first wk of lactation - contrary to the common situation in dairy cows. Both BHB and NEFA values remained below the thresholds applied for dairy cows to define subclinical or clinical ketosis, thus indicating that the buffaloes included in this study were not under metabolic stress. The increase in concentration of the APP around calving supports the concept that an inflammatory reaction is a physiological epiphenomenon of the onset of lactation in water buffalos that is independent of metabolic stress. We propose a fast algorithm to energise a cryogen free magnet to a highly persistent state. A decay rate as low as 0.021 ppm/h can be achieved in less than an hour after reaching the target field. The decay rate drops further to 0.0004 ppm/h in the following 48 h. This procedure can be applied at different values of target field, which makes it feasible to use a single magnet for study of various NMR lines at different fields. The mechanism of establishing a highly stable magnetic field can be understood on the basis of the magnetic properties of the superconducting wire, which were studied using a vibrating sample magnetometer. The results confirm the high quality of the superconducting wire and joints.Particulate matter (PM), which is the primary contributor to air pollution, has become a pervasive global health threat. When PM enters into a respiratory tract, the first body tissues to be directly exposed are the cells of respiratory tissues and pulmonary surfactant. Pulmonary surfactant is a pivotal component to modulate surface tension of alveoli during respiration. Many studies have proved that PM would interact with pulmonary surfactant to affect the alveolar activity, and meanwhile, pulmonary surfactant would be adsorbed to the surface of PM to change the toxic effect of PM. This review focuses on recent studies of the interactions between micro/nanoparticles (synthesized and environmental particles) and pulmonary surfactant (natural surfactant and its models), as well as the health effects caused by PM through a few significant aspects, such as surface properties of PM, including size, surface charge, hydrophobicity, shape, chemical nature, etc. Moreover, in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that PM leads to oxidative stress, inflammatory response, fibrosis, and cancerization in living bodies. By providing a comprehensive picture of PM-surfactant interaction, this review will benefit both researchers for further studies and policy-makers for setting up more appropriate regulations to reduce the adverse effects of PM on public health.

The hardening hypothesis proposes that as smoking rates decline, the remaining smokers will become hardcore and resistant to quitting. This group of highly resistant quitters will potentially require more individualistic approaches to cessation and harm reduction. The harm reduction approach (specifically e-cigarettes) has been proposed as an option to address hardened Australian smokers. We tested the hardening hypothesis by analysing the rates of hardcore smoking in the Australian smoking population between 2010 and 2016.

Data were drawn from three waves of the National Drug Strategy Household Survey (NDSHS) in 2010, 2013 and 2016. Two different definitions were used to assess hardcore smoking to arrive at an upper and lower rate. Logistic regression models assessed hardcore smoker characteristics for both definitions of hardcore smoking.

The most inclusive definition of hardcore smoking (i.e., a smoker with no plan to quit) showed a significant decline in hardcore smoking between 2010 and 2016 (5.49%-4.85%) In contrast, the prevalence of hardcore smoking using the most stringent definition (i.e., a current daily smoker of at least 15 cigarettes per day, aged 26years or over, with no intention to quit, a lifetime consumption of at least 100 cigarettes, and no quit attempt in the past 12months) did not change significantly between 2010 and 2016.

The observed trends in the prevalence of hardcore smokers (i.e., either stable or declining depending on the definition) suggest that the Australian smoking population is not hardening. These results do not support claims that remaining smokers are becoming hardcore.

Carotenoids can serve as marker substances for the antioxidant status of the epidermis in vivo. The carotenoid concentration of 2 homemade green smoothies and a commercial green smoothie, all containing fruits and vegetables, was assessed by resonance Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, a pilot study was conducted to investigate changes of the cutaneous carotenoid concentration of 20 healthy volunteers under the daily intake of either a homemade smoothie or the commercial smoothie in vivo using reflectance spectroscopy. We hypothesized that higher carotenoid concentrations in the homemade smoothies compared to those of the commercial one would lead to a faster increase of the cutaneous carotenoid concentration in healthy volunteers. The measurements of the homemade smoothies showed notably higher initial carotenoid concentrations (7.6 ±0.8)*10-4arbitrary units (a.u.) (smoothie A) and (10.4 ± 0.6)*10-4 a.u. Microtubule Associat inhibitor (smoothie B) compared to the commercial smoothie (5.8 ± 0.2)*10-4 a.u. Nevertheless, the commercial smoothie showed a higher stability of carotenoids over 24 hours. 8 weeks after daily consumption of the homemade smoothies, volunteers showed an insignificant increase of cutaneous carotenoids from (4.5 ± 0.1)*10-4 a.u. at baseline to (4.8 ± 0.3)*10-4 a.u. (means ± standard error of the mean). The volunteers consuming the commercial smoothie showed an insignificant increase of cutaneous carotenoids from (4.3 ± 0.2)*10-4 a.u. to (4.7 ± 0.2)*10-4 a.u. after 8 weeks. The observed increase of cutaneous carotenoid concentrations could be classified as a strong tendency. Fresh homemade smoothies can exhibit a higher carotenoid concentration compared to commercial smoothies but need to be consumed immediately after preparation.

The effect of smoking on adrenal cancer is poorly understood. A clear association of adrenal adenoma and adrenocortical carcinoma with smoking among the United States population is observed. This association points to the possibility of environmental carcinogenic and/or lifestyle factors contributing to adrenal cancer formation. Our results support the association of tobacco use with adrenal adenomas and adrenal cortical carcinoma.

Smoking has been suggested as a risk factor for adrenal cortical carcinoma (ACC), but this hypothesis has only been inferred from a single study using all types of adrenal cancers including pheochromocytoma, neuroblastoma, as well as ACC. Given the high rate of tobacco use in West Virginia, we hypothesized that smoking might contribute to increased prevalence of ACC.

De-identified institutional review board-exempted records were analyzed in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program from 2001-2016 and in patients from the United States nationwide, multicenCC.

To our knowledge, this is the first United States population-based study supporting smoking as a risk factor for adrenal carcinogenesis and ACC.

Schwannomas are rare, slow-growing, usually benign tumors that originate from myelin-producing Schwann cells. Adrenal schwannomas are an exceptionally rare subset of these tumors, with few cases reported in the literature.

We present the case of a 44-year old female patient being evaluated for chronic abdominal pain at the outpatient clinic. Clinical and laboratory workup was unremarkable. An abdominal CT scan was performed, revealing a left suprarenal solid mass (5 × 6 cm). Surgical resection of the adrenal gland was performed, given the patient's symptoms, the size of the tumor, and its malignant potential. The patient completed the postoperative period satisfactorily, and her symptoms improved. Histopathological findings were compatible with a benign adrenal schwannoma.

Schwannomas generally appear in the head, neck and extremities, with the vestibulocochlear nerve being the most frequently involved site. Retroperitoneal schwannomas account for 1-5% of retroperitoneal masses and comprise only 1-3% of all schwannomas. Their incidence increases with age, from 4% in the general population, reaching 7% in patients over 70 years of age.

Adrenal incidentalomas represent a diagnostic challenge. Because of the malignant potential of large (> 4 cm) adrenal masses and the lack of characteristic findings using conventional imaging techniques and laboratory diagnostic tools, surgical excision with histopathology and immunohistochemistry analysis are required for definitive diagnosis and optimal management.

The results found that total psychological resilience score, and resilience subscales such as emotion control and goal focus mean scores of the firstborn child was significantly lower compared to the only child (Ps less then 0.05). The total psychological resilience scores of both male and female in firstborn children was significantly lower, when compared respectively to only children (Ps less then 0.01). Emotional warmth and understanding in both parents was positively correlated to total psychological resilience (Ps less then 0.01) in the only child. Severe punishment by the father and rejection/denial by the mother were factors negatively correlated to total psychological resilience score in the only child (Ps less then 0.01). Severe punishment and rejection/denial by the father and severe punishment by the mother was negatively correlated to total psychological resilience score in the firstborn child (Ps less then 0.
