Pectus excavatum is the most common chest wall deformity and is associated to various connective tissue, cardiopulmonary, and skeletal abnormalities. Several conditions and syndromes have been associated to pectus excavatum, although the overall health implications of the pectus excavatum phenotype are unclear. Therefore, in this study we aimed to examine the health implications of the pectus excavatum phenotype by assessing all comorbidities and previous medical conditions in a cohort of patients undergoing pectus excavatum surgery.

This single-centre retrospective prevalence study included 1,046 patients undergoing minimal invasive repair of pectus excavatum from 2001 to 2012. Hospital medical charts were assessed and comorbidities and previous medical conditions were registered systematically and categorized according to the affected organ system.

In our study population of 1,046 patients, we registered 623 conditions. The median age was 17 years and the majority of patients (56%) had no previous or present conditions. Notable prevalence of asthma (8.8%), allergies (12.3%), previous hernia surgery (5.2%), and psychiatric conditions (4.9%) were found.

The majority of patients undergoing pectus excavatum surgery have no comorbidities or previous medical conditions. It seems that this patient category is comparable to the background population in this regard and our findings do not support screening this patient category for associated conditions.

Bronchiectasis is characterized by recurrent infectious exacerbations. No existing data inform preventive strategy for exacerbations beyond chronic macrolides. read more OM-85 BV, an immunostimulant, has been shown to prevent recurrent respiratory infections. We initiated this 1-year, multi-centered, double-blind, and controlled trial to investigate the PReventive effect of OM-85 BV on Bronchiectasis Exacerbations in Chinese patients (iPROBE).

Patients with bronchiectasis aged 18 to 75 years, having at least one exacerbation in the past year, were randomized to receive, in addition to any respiratory medications, two courses of 7 mg of OM-85 BV or matching placebo (one capsule orally per day for 10 days a month) for 3 consecutive months, followed by 3 months without treatment. The primary outcomes included the number of acute infectious exacerbations and the time to first exacerbation. Secondary endpoints included patient-reported respiratory outcomes. Safety measures were also assessed.

Among the 196 participants, 99 were in the OM-85 BV group and 97 in the placebo group. At week 52, the mean number of acute exacerbations per patient was equal to 0.98 and 0.75, respectively, in the two groups (P=0.14). Difference in the time to first pulmonary exacerbation was not statistically significant (P=0.11). There was no statistically significant difference in any secondary end-points. The safety profile in the two arms was good and the majority of adverse events were mild.

OM-85 BV did not demonstrate protection in decreasing pulmonary exacerbations of bronchiectasis in this trial performed in Chinese patients. It had good safety profile.

Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) generally involves endotracheal intubation under general anesthesia. However, inevitably, this may cause intubation-related complications and prolong the postoperative recovery process. Gradually, non-intubated video-assisted thoracic surgery (NIVATS) is increasingly being utilized. However, its safety and efficacy remain controversial.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published up to August 2020 were selected from the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases and included in this study according to the inclusion criteria. Two reviewers screened these RCTs and independently extracted the relevant data. After assessing the risk of bias in these RCTs, a meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.3. Pooled data were meta-analyzed using a random-effects model.

Meta-analysis data demonstrated that the mean difference (MD) in the length of hospital stay between non-intubated patients and intubated patients was -1.41 day form of intervention that can reduce the postoperative pain and complications of various systems and shorten hospital stay duration without prolonging the operation time.

NIVATS is a safe and feasible form of intervention that can reduce the postoperative pain and complications of various systems and shorten hospital stay duration without prolonging the operation time.

Few studies have focused on new-onset postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy who have undergone septal myectomy. Therefore, we investigated the incidence and prognosis effects of postoperative atrial fibrillation following septal myectomy in patients with hypertensive obstructive cardiomyopathy. Additionally, we investigated the relationship of estimated glomerular filtration rate and postoperative atrial fibrillation.

Data from 300 patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy who underwent isolated surgical septal myectomy were collected from January 2012 to March 2018.

The overall incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation during hospitalization was 22.67% (68 of 300 patients). Patients with postoperative atrial fibrillation were older (P<0.001), had lower preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (P<0.001), and a larger preoperative left atrial diameter (P=0.038) compared to patients without. The preoperative estimated gloected the early recovery and the long-term prognoses of patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy who underwent septal myectomy.

The preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate was a moderate predictor of postoperative atrial fibrillation after septal myectomy. Postoperative atrial fibrillation affected the early recovery and the long-term prognoses of patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy who underwent septal myectomy.

Primary spontaneous pneumothorax is managed initially with observation and chest tube placement, followed by surgical intervention in select cases. With little currently published evidence, the role of surgical pleurodesis or pleurectomy to reduce primary spontaneous pneumothorax recurrence is unclear. This study compares the recurrence rates of primary spontaneous pneumothorax following bullectomy alone versus bullectomy with pleurodesis or pleurectomy.

A retrospective review was performed at a quaternary hospital for all patients undergoing surgery for primary spontaneous pneumothorax between June 2006 and December 2018. Patient demographics, disease severity, operative technique, and time between initial surgery and recurrence were recorded. Standard statistical techniques were used for univariable and multivariable analyses.

Of 222 total included patients, 28 required a second surgery 4 (1.8%) for prolonged air leak and 24 (10.8%) for recurrent pneumothorax. The median time from first to second surgctomy and pleurodesis demonstrated a 0% recurrence rate for the treatment of primary spontaneous pneumothorax in this study. Statistical significance was not achieved in univariable or multivariable analyses comparing recurrence rates for the surgical approaches. A multi-center randomized controlled trial with longer follow-up than previously performed is needed to confirm these preliminary findings and optimize surgical management of primary spontaneous pneumothorax.

We aimed to comprehensively analyze all the literature related to aortic dissection (AD) in the past decade using Web Scrapping technology from PubMed, revealing the research dynamics in this field.

Data were retrieved and downloaded from PubMed with search strategy as "(aortic dissection [Title/Abstract]) AND (2010[EDAT] 2020[EDAT])". Information on the PMID, journal name, title, number of citations, publication year, authors, affiliations, abstract, study type, and keywords of the research was recorded.

A total of 7,470 publications were identified. Most of the articles were published in

; Japan was the country with the largest publications number; the USA was far ahead of other countries regarding the highly cited studies; Yale University and Baylor College of Medicine took the first place for publishing most of the highly cited articles; the most frequently cited article is the 2014 ESC Guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of aortic diseases; most of the clinical trials were published on

; John A. Elefteriades ranked first by cumulative publication numbers; Christoph A. Nienaber took the lead by both cumulative citations and impact factors; Dianna M. Milewicz was the only female researcher on all the three ranking lists; the most common keywords in aortic dissection were Treatment Outcome and Retrospective Studies.

This study provides interesting insights into the AD scientific landscape in recent 10 years and generates some objective evidence for comprehensive understanding and evaluation of this field. This investigation may ultimately inform managers, researchers and policymakers.

Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) occurs more frequently in young, tall men, with approximately 10,000 times video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) annually in Japan is undergoing for surgical treatment. The underlying mechanisms remain unclear, but several reports have suggested correlation with weather conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between onset of PSP and changes in weather.

We retrospectively analyzed data from 112 patients who underwent VATS for PSP in Iwate, Japan from 1 January 2010 to 14 June 2020. Of the 3,818 days in this study period, the day on which the patient became aware of symptoms was classified as the PSP onset day (n=112), and all others were classified as PSP non-onset day (n=3,706). Meteorological data were collected from airbase station using an online source for the same place and same time. Logistic regression modeling was used to obtain predicted risks for the onset of PSP with respect to weather conditions.

Among the meteorological parameters, significant differences were mainly found at 2 days before onset for increasing average temperature [odds ratio (OR) 1.
