It is a great challenge to accurately estimate chemical activity of hydrophobic organic contaminants in field soils. Ex-situ and in-situ determinations were developed for this purpose based on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) passive sampling and non-equilibrium correction by release of performance reference compounds (PRCs) previously spiked to the samplers. This work investigated kinetic processes of target contaminants' uptake into and PRCs' release from the sampler in an ex-situ soil suspension incubated for 100 days. A close agreement of kinetic parameters for pyrene's (target) uptake into and deuterated pyrene's (PRC) release from LDPE indicated their similar exchange kinetics. Three kinetic models were developed to correct uptake of target compounds in non-equilibrium conditions via release processes of PRCs. The second-order kinetic model was recommended for ex-situ measurements. The PRC-based non-equilibrium corrections were further applied to in-situ static passive sampling from several weeks to months in a PAH-contaminated field site. Two-weeks' deployments were sufficient for quantifying lighter PAHs (logKOA 9.0), even if over four months. Concentration estimates from the in-situ and ex-situ passive samplings were comparable in order of magnitude with traditional estimation from equilibrium partitioning models considering both organic and black carbon fractions.Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the most health-relevant air pollutants. Herein, we conducted meta-analysis and experimental validation to evaluate PAHs in our surroundings and carcinogenic risks. We summarized the occurrence of PAHs in outdoors and indoors from 131 studies with 6,766 samples collected in different countries in 1989-2019. The global weighted-median concentration in outdoor air, indoor air and dust of ΣPAHs were 142 ng/m3, 369 ng/m3 and 10,201 ng/g; respectively. ΣPAHs have decreased in indoor air but remained steady in outdoor air and indoor dust. selleck compound More carcinogenic PAHs in indoor/outdoor air was observed in Asia, while in dust was North America. Monte-Carlo simulation further showed indoor sources for children's exposure from dust and air can exceed outdoor. To further validate the health effect of PAHs from indoors, 15 more recent indoor dust samples were collected to examine their mutagenicity. The results showed that ΣPAHs were found to be significantly correlated with mutagenicity potency in the dust sample metabolically activated with liver S9 subcellular fraction and likely accounted for 0.42-0.50 of the mutagenic activity. Our findings indicated that PAHs are still likely to have carcinogenic activity in indoor environments and exposure risk of children to indoor dust should be emphasized.Precipitation of arsenic as As2S3 produces little waste sludge, has the potential for low chemical consumption and for selective metal(loid) removal. In this study, arsenic removal from acidic (pH 2), metallurgical wastewater was tested in industrially relevant conditions. Sulfides added at a SAs molar ratio of 2.5 and 5 resulted in removal of 99% and 84% of As(III) and As(V). Precipitation of As2S3 from the As(III) and industrial wastewater containing 17% As(V) was nearly instantaneous. For the synthetic As(V) solution, reduction to As(III) was the rate limiting step. At a SAs ratio of 20 and an observed removal rate (k2 = 4.8 (mol L-1) h-1), two hours were required to remove of 93% of arsenic from a 1 g As L-1 solution. In the case of As(V) in industrial samples this time lag was not observed, showing that components in the industrial wastewater affected the removal and reduction of arsenate. Speciation also affected flocculation and coagulation characteristics of As2S3 particles As(V) reduction resulted in poor coagulation and flocculation. Selective precipitation of arsenic was possible, but depended on speciation, SAs ratio and other metals present. The work aimed to synthesize three heterojunction photocatalysts (Eg = 2.65-2.78 eV) via in-situ encapsulation of 5% zinc doped titanium oxynitride (Zn0.05TiOxNy) catalyst into MOF-5 and bulk (BCN)/sulfur-doped (SCN) g-C3N4 supports using a microwave method. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized and utilized to purify textile industrial wastewater from the organic dye (e.g., methylene blue, MB) and microbial (e.g., E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans) contaminants under dark, visible, and solar lights. The output data confirmed the higher activity of Zn0.05TiOxNy@SCN and Zn0.05TiOxNy@MOF-5 for photo-induced microbial growth inactivation (> 90%) under visible light, with photo-biocidal efficiency of 0.91-1.69 mCFU/Einstein. Such a phenomenon is ascribed to the synergism between the high antimicrobial capacity of supports and photoactivity of Zn0.05TiOxNy. Also, Zn0.05TiOxNy@SCN exhibited far superiority to mineralize MB dye (Kphoto of 2.73 × 10-2 min-1) under direct sunlight due to its high photonic (ζ% of 4.4-8.3%)/quantum (QE of 0.56-0.54%) efficiencies for the generation of hydroxyl and superoxide (-•O2/•OH) oxidative species. As a practical case study, all heterojunction photocatalysts also demonstrated high-performance stability (5 cycles) for real textile wastewater treatment under sunlight (efficiency = 76.1-84.6%).Messenger RNA (mRNA) represents a promising next-generation approach for both treatment and vaccination. Lipid based particles are one of the most investigated delivery systems for mRNA formulations. Here we explore how the complexing lipid affects uptake and translation of lipoplex-delivered RNA in resident cells in human skin explants and, we explore a more modular delivery system that utilizes mRNA added to pre-formed nanoparticles prior to dosing. We prepared formulations of lipoplexes with ionizable, cationic or zwitterionic lipids, externally complexed these with mRNA, and observed which cells internalized and/or expressed the mRNA over 72 h after intradermal injections into primary, human, skin explants. Using a flow cytometry panel to assess cellular phenotypes, mRNA uptake and mRNA expression, we found that, unlike other cell types, adipocytes expressed mRNA efficiently at 4 and 24 h after mRNA-lipoplex injection and contributed the greatest proportion of total RNA-encoded protein expression, despite being the lowest frequency cell type.
