CONCLUSIONS This study of farmworkers identified gaps in the knowledge of TBDs, barriers of the tick bite preventive measures and information needs. These findings suggest a need for education programs to improve the knowledge of ticks and TBDs, change health beliefs and address the barriers of tick bite preventive measures. Climate is key in order to understand leptospirosis dynamics. El Niño Southern Oscillation is the main modulator of climate in Colombia. Our goal was to analyze the changes that occurred in number of cases and incidence rate of leptospirosis during La Niña and El Niño episodes in Colombia at three spatial scales in the period between 2007 and 2015. METHODOLOGY A cross-sectional retrospective study was performed. DATA ANALYSIS correlation and lagged cross correlation between time series of Oscillation Niño Index and time series of standardized number of leptospirosis cases; construction of annual cycle of leptospirosis; comparison of changes of number of cases between Neutral, periods with El Niño and Neutral periods with La Niña. RESULTS At the national level, monthly number of cases raised a 25% during La Niña and decreased of 17% during El Niño. At departmental level, increase of cases in both phases of ENSO, depending on the location in the country, was found. At the municipal level, 17 have a rise in the number of cases during La Niña months. Of those, seven presented also an increase of cases during El Niño months and eight have a significant negative correlation with ONI. CONCLUSIONS In Colombia, there exists a relationship between leptospirosis and the excess and lack of rainfall related with ENSO. The contrasting results from each spatial scale, reinforce that leptospirosis is a multidimensional disease with high complex interactions among its determinants. Our aim was to study the relationship between antibiotic consumption and carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) in three public general tertiary hospitals from 2011-2015 in the eastern, western and central regions of China. METHODOLOGY Valid data were collected quarterly, and the antibiotic consumption data were expressed as the defined daily dose (DDD) per 100 inpatient days (ID). Bacterial resistance was reported as the percentage of resistant isolates among all tested isolates. Individual trends were calculated by linear regression, while possible correlations between antibiotic consumption and CRKP were evaluated by distributed lags time series analysis. RESULTS Over the 5-year period, an overall significant increasing trend (P 0.3) of carbapenems consumption and the prevalence of CRKP was observed in all three hospitals. This correlated with the use of ceftazidime, cefoperazone/sulbactam, cefminox and meropenem at a hospital in eastern China, with the increased use of meropenem at a hospital in eentral China and with the increased use of doxycycline, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, meropenem and biapenem at a hospital in western China. CONCLUSIONS We report a high incidence of CRKP in all three hospitals and that an increase in carbapenem usage is associated with this. Further research is needed to elucidate which factors influence the increased consumption of carbapenems. BTK inhibitor This study was conducted to analyze the NTM species composition in a primary hospital and investigate the potential features of the patients with different NTM species. METHODOLOGY Mycobacterial strains were collected from the patients admitted at the hospital from January 2016 to May 2019. MPB64 assay was used to screen NTM strains and confirmed by Rv0577 amplification. The species were identified by hsp65 sequencing. The clinical records of patients with NTM were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS Among the 122 identified NTM isolates, the most common strains were Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC, n = 102, 83.6%), Mycobacterium abscessus (n = 9, 7.4%) and Mycobacterium lentiflavum (n = 5, 4.1%). The predominant species among MAC were Mycobacterium chimaera (n = 57, 46.7%), followed by Mycobacterium intracellulare (n = 25, 20.5%) and Mycobacterium colombiense (n = 17, 13.9%). A significantly lower percentage of positive acid-fast assay was observed in Mycobacterium colombiense positive patients than in those with Mycobacterium intracellulare and Mycobacterium chimaera. Mycobacterium intracellulare was more frequently isolated in patients from the infectious department than in other MAC members. CONCLUSIONS A predominant prevalence of Mycobacterium chimaera in Dongyang of Zhejiang Province was different from other regions in China, indicating that its prevalence has been likely underestimated. The heterogeneity in clinical features, caused by different MAC members, required an accurate species identification of the NTM isolated in the primary hospitals. In April 2018, one 36 cases of diarrhea outbreak occurred in a high school in Beijing after a trip to another province in Southern China. The investigation for the enteric pathogen infection was conducted to identify the cause. METHODOLOGY Eighteen stool specimens from 11 diarrheal patients and 3 close contacts were collected and tested for 16 enteric bacterial and viral pathogens using real-time PCR methods. Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST), pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were applied to C. jejuni isolates in this outbreak in order to characterize the incident. RESULTS Ten (90.9%) of 11 stool specimens from diarrheal patients were positive for Campylobacter jejuni, confirmed as the cause of outbreak. Eight C. jejuni strains were obtained and produced 2 sequence types (STs) and 3 PFGE patterns. Six of them had the same ST (ST2274) and PFGE pattern (SMA001).
