During microalga cultivation, to efficiently manipulate, control, and optimize the productivity of a specific compound for a specific application, real-time monitoring of these three cell components is essential. In this study, a method using measurement of electrical capacitance was developed to simultaneously determine the lipid, protein, and carbohydrate content of microalga cells without the requirement for any pre-processing steps. The marine microalga Nannochloropsis oculata was cultivated under nitrogen starvation conditions to induce lipid accumulation over a period of 22 days. The correlation between the electrical capacitance of the microalga culture and the intracellular biomolecule content (determined by standard techniques) was investigated, enabling subsequent deduction of microalga intracellular content from electrical capacitance of the culture. The accuracy and precision of the technique were proven by validating an independent sample. The main advantage of the proposed technique is its capability of quantifying microalga composition within a few minutes, significantly faster than currently available conventional techniques.Background Whole blood donors are at risk of becoming iron deficient. To monitor iron stores, Sanquin implemented a new deferral policy based on ferritin levels, in addition to the traditional hemoglobin measurements. Methods Ferritin levels are determined in every fifth donation, as well as in all first-time donors. Donors with ferritin levels less then 15 ng/mL (WHO threshold) are deferred for 12 months; those ≥15 and ≤30 ng/mL for 6 months. The first results were analyzed and are presented here. Results The results show that 25% of women (N = 20151, 95% CI 24%-25%) and 1.6% of men (N = 10391, 95% CI 1.4%-1.8%) have ferritin levels ≤30 ng/mL at their first blood center visit. For repeat (non-first-time) donors, these proportions are higher 53% of women (N = 28329, 95% CI 52%-54%) and 42% of men (N = 31089, 95% CI 41%-43%). After a 6-month deferral, in 88% of returning women (N = 3059, 95% CI 87%-89%) and 99% of returning men (N = 3736, 95% CI 98%-99%) ferritin levels were ≥15 ng/mL. After a 12-month deferral, in 74% of returning women (N = 486, 95% CI 70%-78%) and 95% of returning men (N = 479, 95% CI 94%-97%) ferritin levels increased to ≥15 ng/mL. To evaluate the current effects of antibiotic resistance on Helicobacter pylori eradication efficacy, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods Literature searches were conducted in the following databases PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Statistical analysis was performed using STATA version 12.0 (StataCorp LP, College Station, TX, USA). Results A total of 120 studies, including 28 707 patients, were assessed. Only first-line therapy was considered. The pooled RR of eradication rate in patients with Helicobacter pylori strains sensitive versus resistant to clarithromycin was 0.682 (95% CI 0.636-0.731). The pooled RR of eradication rate in patients with Helicobacter pylori strains sensitive versus resistant to metronidazole was 0.843 (95% CI 0.810-0.877). The pooled RR of eradication rate in patients with Helicobacter pylori strains sensitive versus resistant to levofloxacin was 0.794 (95% CI 0.669-0.941). The pooled RR of eradication rate in patients with Helicobacter pylori strains sensitive versus resistant to dual clarithromycin and metronidazole was 0.674 (95% CI 0.590-0.770). Conclusion Antibiotic resistance causes a decrease in the eradication rate of H pylori today. Quadruple concomitant therapy may overcome the declining H pylori eradication rate caused by metronidazole-only resistance.A dielectric biconical antenna (DiBiCA) for radiating subnanosecond pulses to treat subcutaneous tissue was designed, constructed, and tested. It is composed of a conical wave launcher and truncated conical emitter. In between, there is a short cylinder that provides a space for a ring terminating resistor. The material of the antenna has a dielectric constant of 28, so its size is small (length 7 cm and aperture diameter 2.2 cm). It was housed in an oil container to withstand high voltages and avoid surface flashover. The radiated electric field, measured in water, increased as the input voltage increased up to 30 kV but leveled off for higher voltages up to 50 kV, presumably because of losses in the antenna dielectric. The maximum field was 1.5 kV/cm for a depth of 5 mm and 1.0 kV/cm for a depth of 20 mm. Methods A retrospective review of pathology reports of 430 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma who were treated from 1992 to 2014 in Tayside, Scotland, was carried out. The expression of nerve growth factor and tyrosine kinase A was assessed with immunohistochemistry in 132 tissue sections of oral squamous cell carcinoma. Results Perineural invasion was identified in 17.4% of oral squamous cell carcinomas. link3 High expression of nerve growth factor and tyrosine kinase A was seen in 84% and 92% of oral squamous cell carcinoma, respectively. Tumours with PNI expressed nerve growth factor and tyrosine kinase A with a greater frequency than tumours without PNI. PNI and high expression of nerve growth factor were significantly associated with pain. PNI was significantly associated with stage IV tumours and poor disease-specific survival. Conclusions A higher level of expression of nerve growth factor and tyrosine kinase A may predict PNI and therefore may be considered as biological markers for PNI in oral squamous cell carcinoma. PNI and nerve growth factor overexpression may contribute to the pain generation in oral cancer patients. PNI and nerve growth factor expression can predict the aggressiveness and prognosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma patients.Peptoids belong to a class of sequence-controlled polymers comprising of N-alkylglycine. This study focuses on using tandem mass spectrometry techniques to characterize the fragmentation patterns of a set of singly and doubly protonated peptoids consisting of one basic residue placed at different positions. The singly protonated peptoids fragment by producing predominately high-abundant C-terminal ions called Y-ions and low-abundant N-terminal ions called B-ions. Computational studies suggest that the proton affinity (PA) of the C-terminal fragments is generally higher than that of the N-terminal fragments, and the PA of the former increases as the fragments are elongated. The B-ions are likely formed upon dissociating the proton-activated amide bonds via an oxazolone structure, and the Y-ions are produced subsequently by abstracting a proton from the newly formed B-ions, which is energetically favored. The doubly protonated peptoids prefer to fragment closest to either the N- or the C-terminus and produce corresponding B/Y-ion pairs.
