Combined phacoemulsification plus excimer laser trabeculostomy (phaco-ELT) is a minimally invasive surgery that effectively reduces intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with glaucoma and a concomitant diagnosis of cataract. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term treatment success as well as safety of phaco-ELT over an 8-year follow-up period.
Patients with a diagnosis of primary or secondary glaucoma or ocular hypertension and a visually significant cataract who underwent a combined phaco-ELT between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2010, were included. Data for IOP, the number of IOP-lowering medications (meds), best-corrected visual acuity, complications, and subsequent surgeries to lower IOP were collected preoperatively (baseline) and intraoperatively as well as at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 1 year, and every 6 months thereafter to 8 years postoperatively.
One hundred sixty-one eyes of 128 patients were included. After 8 years of follow-up, the long-term tr complications, which has a positive long-term effect regarding IOP and meds. Remarkably, the mean IOP-lowering effect remained stable and was reduced ≥ 20% from baseline after 3 months for the remainder of the follow-up duration, whereas the number of meds was reduced significantly for up to 4 years. Furthermore, only 25.5% of the eyes required a subsequent surgery to control IOP throughout the whole follow-up of 8 years.Missing covariates are commonly encountered when evaluating covariate effects on survival outcomes. Excluding missing data from the analysis may lead to biased parameter estimation and a misleading conclusion. The inverse probability weighting method is widely used to handle missing covariates. However, obtaining asymptotic variance in frequentist inference is complicated because it involves estimating parameters for propensity scores. In this paper, we propose a new approach based on an approximate Bayesian method without using Taylor expansion to handle missing covariates for survival data. We consider a stratified proportional hazards model so that it can be used for the non-proportional hazards structure. Two cases for missing pattern are studied a single missing pattern and multiple missing patterns. The proposed estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal, which matches the frequentist asymptotic properties. Simulation studies show that our proposed estimators are asymptotically unbiased and the credible region obtained from posterior distribution is close to the frequentist confidence interval. The algorithm is straightforward and computationally efficient. We apply the proposed method to a stem cell transplantation data set.Problematic Internet use (PIU) has a negative impact on self-esteem among adolescents, thereby making them be vulnerable to developing depressive symptoms. However, there is a lack of longitudinal studies focusing on the process. This study aimed to explore the longitudinal associations between PIU, self-esteem, and depressive symptoms. A total of 1,736 adolescents completed this longitudinal study. The baseline survey was conducted in 2019, and the follow-up surveys were performed at 1-year and 2-year later. PIU, self-esteem, and depressive symptoms were measured. A cascade model was used to examine the longitudinal associations between PIU, self-esteem, and depressive symptoms. The mean age of participants was 13.6 (1.5) years at baseline. The final results observed significant within-time associations between PIU, self-esteem, and depressive symptoms at each time point. PIU and low level of self-esteem could predict subsequent depressive symptoms among adolescents, and depressive symptoms were also associated with subsequent PIU and self-esteem. Both PIU and self-esteem show bidirectional predictions with depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents. Schools and parents should give more attention to adolescents prone to developing depressive symptoms and more social support to reduce their negative emotions. Health-related professionals should incorporate practical knowledge and skills into the education of adolescents to help them better control Internet use, attenuating the risk of future depressive symptoms.
Previous studies on patients with symptoms of spinal ligament ossification, including ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) and ligamentum flavum (OLF), have not clarified whether obesity is a cause or consequence of these diseases and were limited by selection bias. Thus, we investigated the association between obesity and the prevalence of spinal ligament ossification in randomly selected asymptomatic subjects.
Between April 2020 and March 2021, 622 asymptomatic Japanese subjects who underwent computed tomography of neck to pelvis for medical check-up purposes were included. All subjects were divided into the following three groups normal weight (body mass index [BMI] < 25kg/m
), obese I (25 ≤ BMI < 30kg/m
), and obese II (BMI ≥ 30kg/m
). The relationship between factors affecting the presence of each spinal ligament ossification was evaluated using multivariate logistic regression analysis.
The proportion of subjects with thoracic OPLL was significantly higher in the obese II group than in the other two groups (vs. normal weight, P < 0.001; vs. obese I, P < 0.001). BMI was associated with the prevalence of OLF, cervical OPLL, thoracic OPLL, and ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament (OALL). BMI was most significantly associated with the prevalence of thoracic OPLL (β, 0.28; 95% confidence interval, 0.17-0.39).

The effects of genotype, parity, flock and year on milk production, physical and chemical compositions were almost all significant (between p less then 0.05 and p less then 0.001). The F1, F2 and G1 generations produced 24 and 44% higher (p less then 0.001) lactation milk yield (LMY), 12 and 35% (p less then 0.001) fat yield and 19 and 35% (p less then 0.001) protein yield than Hair goat. Positive heterosis was found in milk production and contents both Alpine × Hair F1 (AHF1) and Saanen × Hair F1 (SHF1) generations. The heterotic effect of the LMY was significant in the SHF1 generation (p less then 0.05), but not in the AHF1 generation. The highest correlation was found between LMY and udder circumference and then udder volume (p less then 0.001; r = from 0.34 to 0.75). The coefficient of determination of the obtained equation for the estimation of the LMY in the Hair and cross-bred goats ranged from 0.48 to 0.71. These results showed that as the level of cross-breeding increased in this semi-intensive system, better quality dairy products can be obtained from goats, and udder measurements can be a helpful tool in estimating milk yield, thus reducing the pressure on the ecosystem. Thus, it was concluded that with better modelling of environmental variations, milk production characteristics of local goats can be increased much faster by cross-breeding, especially at the F1 and G1 generation cross-breed levels.Herein, bio-based alginates (Alg) containing metallic beads (Ce and Cu) were synthesized via an alginate cross-linking method, and their properties were studied using experimental techniques combined with theoretical simulations. Materials were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, to determine the cross-linking structural features, thermal stability, and surface morphology of alginates. Besides, density functional theory (DFT) methods were employed to calculate global reactivity parameters such as HOMO-LUMO gap energies (ΔEH-L), electronegativity (χ), hardness (η), and electrophilic and nucleophilic indicators, using both gas and aqueous media for the study of the complexation process. Among other features, characterization of the thermal properties showed that Alg@Ce and Alg@Cu alginate beads behave differently as a function of the temperature. This behavior was also predicted by the conformation energy differences between Alg@Ce and Alg@Cu, which were found out theoretically and explained with the combined study of the vibrational modes between the carboxylate group with either Ce or Cu. Overall, the reactivity of the Alg@Ce alginate bead was higher than that of the Alg@Cu counterpart, results could be used as a cornerstone to employed the materials here studied in a wide range of applications.Molecular transport and cell circulation between tissues and organs through blood and lymphatic vessels are essential for physiological homeostasis in vertebrates. Despite the report of its association with vessel formation in solid tumors, the biological effects of Copper (Cu) accumulation on angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis during embryogenesis are still unknown. In this study, we unveiled that intersegmental blood circulation was partially blocked in Cu2+-stressed zebrafish embryos and cell migration and tube formation were impaired in Cu2+-stressed mammalian HUVECs. Specifically, Cu2+-stressed embryos showed down-regulation in the expression of amotl2 and its downstream pERK1/2-foxm1-MMP2/9 regulatory axis, and knockdown/knockout of foxm1 in zebrafish embryos phenocopied angiogenesis defects, while FOXM1 knockdown HUVECs phenocopied cell migration and tube formation defects, indicating that excessive Cu2+-induced angiogenesis defects and blocked cell migration via down-regulating amotl2-pERK1/2-foxm1-MMP2/9 regulatory axis in both embryos and mammalian cells. Additionally, thoracic duct was revealed to be partially absent in Cu2+-stressed zebrafish embryos. Specifically, Cu2+-stressed embryos showed down-regulation in the expression of ccbe1 (a gene with pivotal function in lymphangiogenesis) due to the hypermethylation of the E2F7/8 binding sites on ccbe1 promoter to reduce their binding enrichment on the promoter, contributing to the potential mechanisms for down-regulation of ccbe1 and the formation of lymphangiogenesis defects in Cu2+-stressed embryos and mammalian cells. These integrated data demonstrate that Cu2+ stress impairs angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis via down-regulation of pERK1/2-foxm1-MMP2/9 axis and epigenetic regulation of E2F7/8 transcriptional activity on ccbe1 expression, respectively.Mechanisms underlying the SARS-CoV-2-triggered hyperacute thrombo-inflammatory response that causes multi-organ damage in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are poorly understood. Several lines of evidence implicate overactivation of complement. To delineate the involvement of complement in COVID-19, we prospectively studied 25 ICU-hospitalized patients for up to 21 days. Complement biomarkers in patient sera and healthy controls were quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Correlations with respiratory function and mortality were analyzed. Activation of complement via the classical/lectin pathways was variably increased. Strikingly, all patients had increased activation of the alternative pathway (AP) with elevated levels of activation fragments, Ba and Bb. This was associated with a reduction of the AP negative regulator, factor (F) H.
