For synthesis, findings from strongly and moderately rated studies were given more weight and those from the low-quality studies were used to support the synthesized themes. RESULTS Three themes emerged a) applying learned ethical values vs. accepting unethical practices, b) desiring to provide ethical care but lacking autonomous decision making, and c) Silence vs. whistleblowing patient care neglects. CONCLUSIONS Nursing students feel torn between the conflicts of whether to provide ethical care or accept unethical practices, stay silent about patient care neglect or confront and report it, provide ethical and quality care or adapt to the culture due to lack of autonomous decision making. Such conflicts can be detrimental to students' professional learning and mental health. Therefore, educators and nursing institutions should develop programs to support students and help them develop ethical competence and courage to confront such dilemmas. BACKGROUND Education literature worldwide is replete with studies evaluating the effectiveness of Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) in admissions to medicine but less then 1% of published studies have been conducted in selection to nursing and midwifery programmes. OBJECTIVES To examine the predictive validity of MMIs using end of programme clinical and academic performance indicators of pre-registration adult, child, and mental health nursing and midwifery students. DESIGN AND SETTING A cross-sectional cohort study at one university in the United Kingdom. PARTICIPANTS A non-probability consecutive sampling strategy whereby all applicants to the September 2015 pre-registration adult, child, mental health nursing and midwifery programmes were invited to participate. Of the 354 students who commenced year one, 225 (64%) completed their three-year programme and agreed to take part (adult 120, child 32, mental health nursing 30 and midwifery 43). METHODS All applicants were interviewed using MMIs with six and sevetions. Mentorship of junior radiologists in nonacademic settings can ease their transition into nonacademic practice, foster comradery, increase radiologist retention, and support career growth. Strategies to implement and sustain effective mentorship in nonacademic radiology practice settings are described. SUMMARY Strategies to implement and sustain mentorship in nonacademic radiology practice settings are described. Branchial cleft cysts are the most common lesions in the lateral neck with ectopic thyroid tissue found only rarely within these cysts. Over the years, multiple cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma arising from these ectopic thyroid tissues have been described in the literature with these cases sharing a normal thyroid gland on surgical and histological evaluation. Recently, however, there are three cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma in a branchial cleft cyst reported to be the result of metastasis from a thyroid primary. We present a 49-year-old female with a rare case of papillary thyroid carcinoma metastasis to a branchial cleft cyst with imaging characteristics that may prospectively suggest metastatic involvement. The green microalgae Closterium ehrenbergii is an ideal organism for ecotoxicology assessments; however, its toxicogenomics has been insufficiently examined. Here, we identified three iron/manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD) genes (designated as CeFeSOD1, CeFeSOD2, and CeMnSOD) from C. ehrenbergii and examined their expressional patterns for four metals (iron, manganese, copper, and nickel). These genes encoded 362, 224, and 245 amino acids, respectively; signal-peptide analysis showed that they were differentially located in chloroplasts, cytosol, or mitochondria. Real-time PCRs revealed differential expression patterns according to metal and doses. Interestingly, CeSODs displayed no noticeable changes to treatment with their corresponding cofactor metals, iron or manganese, even at high doses. However, they were obviously up-regulated under toxic metal (copper and nickel) exposure, exhibiting approximately 10.8- and 4.4-fold increases, respectively. Copper (0.2 mg/L) dramatically stimulated intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, increased SOD activity, and reduced photosynthetic efficiency in C. ehrenbergii. These results suggest that CeFeSODs and CeMnSOD might be involved in protecting cells against damage and oxidative stress caused by non-cofactor metals, such as copper and nickel. These genes were sensitively responsive at levels well below the EC50, showing that they can be used as molecular biomarkers to assess the toxicity of specific metal contaminants. This work reports on simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal treating real domestic wastewater with low carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio by aerobic granular sludge (AGS). Operations at high sludge retention time (SRT = 61 ± 24 days) resulted in low biomass yield per chemical oxygen demand removed (CODrem) (0.21 ± 0.01 gCODx/gCODrem), lower COD demand for denitrification as well as high effluent quality in terms of total suspended solids (TSS) (22 ± 7 mgTSS/L). The average ratio between the biodegradable soluble COD stored anaerobically as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and the N removed was 3.1 ± 0.6 gCODsto/gNrem, suggesting that nitrification/denitrification occurred partly via the nitrite pathway. Results revealed that stable AGS process with high C/N/P removal efficiency of 84/71/96% can be obtained besides a low organic loading rate (0.43 ± 0.11 g COD/L/d) and influent C/N ratio (3.8 ± 1.6 g/g), resulting in a high effluent quality characterized by 25 ± 6 mg sCOD/L, 0.09 ± 0.07 mgPO4-P/L, 9 ± 2 mgTIN/L (10 ± 2 mgTN/L) and 22 ± 7 mgTSS/L. A fast, fit-for-purpose, high-throughput method was developed and validated for the analysis of 302 targeted contaminants in catfish muscle. Targeted contaminants included pesticides and metabolites with US regulatory levels, plus other lipophilic pesticides and environmental contaminants PAHs, PCBs, PBDEs and other flame retardants. The sample preparation was based on QuEChERS extraction. Barasertib price The extract was split and analyzed by UHPLC-MS/MS for 128 analytes after filtering and by low pressure (LP) GC-MS/MS for 219 analytes after an automated robotic micro-SPE cleanup. The method was validated at four spiking levels (5, 10, 20 and 40 ng/g) with 10 replicates per level, and satisfactory recoveries (70-120%) and RSDs (≤20%) were achieved for 80% of the analytes. The method was further validated with NIST SRMs 1946 and 1947 and applied for the analysis of 22 market fish samples. Six pesticides and one PAH were found in the market fish samples, all below US regulatory levels. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
