Mean neighborhood greenspace was 38% (SD = 28%). Greater proportion of greenspace in the neighborhood five years before MRI was borderline associated with lower ventricle grade (estimate -0.30; 95% confidence interval -0.61, 0.00). We observed no associations between greenspace and the other MRI outcome measures and no evidence of effect modification by APOE genotype and sex.

This study suggests a possible association between greater greenspace and less ventricular enlargement, a measure reflecting global brain atrophy. If confirmed in other longitudinal cohort studies, interventions and policies to improve community greenspaces may help to maintain brain health in older age.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether the choice of means by persons who die by suicide is associated with a prior psychiatric diagnosis.

In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed suicide surveillance data from 18 states reporting to the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) between 2003 and 2014. NVDRS compiled data from multiple sources (e.g., coroner's reports, police reports, death certificates) on every violent death within reporting jurisdictions, including information on indicated psychiatric disorders and suicide means. We assessed whether the selected suicide means were associated with diagnoses using multinomial logistic regression.

Adjusted models suggested that, compared to decedents using firearms, those using poisoning were more likely to have each psychiatric disorder examined, including bipolar disorder (aOR 2.17 [95% CI 2.03-2.32]), schizophrenia (aOR 1.81 [1.61-2.04]), depression (aOR 1.64 [1.58-1.70]), anxiety disorder (aOR 1.46 [1.35-1.57]), and PTSD (aOR 1.41 [1.22-1.64]). A far greater proportion of individuals who died from less common means (other than firearms, suffocation, or poisoning) had schizophrenia (aOR 4.52 [4.00-5.11]).

Many existing and proposed means restriction interventions have focused on firearms. Additional focus on access to potential agents of poisoning (e.g., the type and quantity of medication administered to patients) among individuals with psychiatric diagnoses may be warranted.

Civilians in Tavush Province are regularly affected by ceasefire violations along the armed border with recent escalations further threatening the population's safety. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, concerns regarding the mental health of border village residents in Armenia are prevalent. link2 We present context-related factors of psychiatric illness, the prevalence of mental health disorders, and the state of mental health services in Armenia. link3 We recommend directing greater attention towards the mental health status of civilians residing in conflict zones during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Domestic violence (DV) by husbands or in-laws is a recognized problem in many countries and is associated with a wide range of adverse mental health outcomes. However, detailed knowledge on the relationship between DV experience and postpartum depression (PPD) is essential to design appropriate interventions. Therefore, this study assesses the relationship between maternal experience of DV perpetrated by husbands or in-laws and PPD in Bangladesh.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted from October to December 2019 among 497 mothers within the first 6months postpartum who attended a health center in Rajshahi City Corporation, Bangladesh. Multivariable logistic regressions were performed to identify the associations after controlling for potential confounders.

The prevalence of PPD in this sample was 34% within the first 6months after birth; 58.6% of mothers reported having experienced any form of DV in their lifetime. Maternal experience of any form of DV (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR] = 1.87; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.19-2.93) was associated with PPD, as were experiences of any physical DV (AOR = 2.25; 95% CI = 1.40-3.59), emotional DV (AOR = 2.07; 95% CI = 1.34-3.19), and controlling behavior (AOR = 1.69; 95% CI = 1.08-2.66). Additionally, the likelihood of PPD significantly increased among women who experienced more forms of DV.

DV perpetrated by husband and/or in-laws is highly prevalent and significantly associated with PPD in Bangladesh. Strategies in developing interventions for improving maternal mental health should consider DV perpetrated by either husband or in-laws.

The present study examined the prospective association of neuroticism, extraversion and psychoticism with risk of hospital diagnosed mental disorder, examining intelligence as a potential confounder of this association.

A total of 1118 Danish men and women completed the Eysenck personality questionnaire at the mean age of 27years. Information on psychiatric diagnoses was obtained by linking the study population to the national Danish psychiatric registers, and risk of diagnoses associated with each personality trait was examined using multiple Cox regression in models including the three personality traits unadjusted and adjusted for intelligence. Participants with diagnosis from a psychiatric department prior to the personality assessment were excluded.

In total, 122 participants were diagnosed with a mental disorder during follow-up. Neuroticism significantly predicted risk of anxiety-, adjustment-, personality- and alcohol and substance abuse diagnoses. Extraversion did not significantly predict any diagnosis type, while psychoticism predicted a combined category of mood and anxiety diagnoses. Despite intelligence being a significant predictor of the majority of the included diagnoses, adjusting for intelligence did not substantially influence any trait-disorder associations.

The results confirm high neuroticism as a prospective vulnerability factor for mental disorder and indicate high psychoticism to be a potential risk factor for mood and anxiety disorders. These associations are not confounded by intelligence.

Studies have reported children born by caesarean section are more likely to have lower cognitive outcomes compared to those born by vaginal delivery. This paper reviews the literature examining caesarean birth and offspring cognitive outcomes.

A systematic search for observational studies or case-control studies that compared cognitive outcomes of people born by caesarean section with those born by vaginal delivery was conducted in six databases (Medline, PubMed, EMBASE, PsychInfo, CINAHL, Web of Science) from inception until December 2019 according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies were assessed for quality and a narrative synthesis was undertaken considering the evidence for a causal relationship according to the Bradford Hill Criteria.

A total of seven studies were identified. Of these, four found a significant association between elective and emergency caesarean birth and reduction in offspring cognitive performance as measured by g variables and (c) have valid outcome measures of cognition.

Although patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection have several risk factors for ventilator-associated lower respiratory tract infections (VA-LRTI), the reported incidence of hospital-acquired infections is low. We aimed to determine the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, as compared to influenza pneumonia or no viral infection, and the incidence of VA-LRTI.

Multicenter retrospective European cohort performed in 36 ICUs. All adult patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation > 48h were eligible if they had SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, influenza pneumonia, or no viral infection at ICU admission. VA-LRTI, including ventilator-associated tracheobronchitis (VAT) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), were diagnosed using clinical, radiological and quantitative microbiological criteria. All VA-LRTI were prospectively identified, and chest-X rays were analyzed by at least two physicians. Cumulative incidence of first episodes of VA-LRTI was estimated using the Kalbfleisch and Prentice method, and comparestatistical adjustment, but residual confounding may still play a role in the effect estimates.Acid mine drainage (AMD) harbors all three life forms in spite of its toxic and hazardous nature. In comparison to bacterial diversity, an in-depth understanding of the archaeal diversity in AMD and their ecological significance remain less explored. Archaeal populations are known to play significant roles in various biogeochemical cycles within the AMD ecosystem, and it is imperative to have a deeper understanding of archaeal diversity and their functional potential in AMD system. The present study is aimed to understand the archaeal diversity of an AMD sediment of Malanjkhand Copper Project, India through archaea specific V6 region of 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Geochemical data confirmed the acidic, toxic, heavy metal-rich nature of the sample. Archaea specific V6-16S rRNA gene amplicon data showed a predominance of Thermoplasmata (BSLdp215, uncultured Thermoplasmata, and Thermoplasmataceae) and Nitrososphaeria (Nitrosotaleaceae) members constituting ~ 95% of the archaeal community. Uncultured members of Bathyarchaeia, Group 1.1c, Hydrothermarchaeota, and Methanomassiliicoccales along with Methanobacteriaceae, Methanocellaceae, Haloferaceae, Methanosaetaceae, and Methanoregulaceae constituted the part of rare taxa. Analysis of sequence reads indicated that apart from their close ecological relevance, members of the Thermoplasmata present in Malanjkhand AMD were mostly involved in chemoheterotrophy, Fe/S redox cycling, and with heavy metal resistance, while the Nitrososphaeria members were responsible for ammonia oxidation and fixation of HCO3- through 3-hydroxypropionate/4-hydroxybutyrate cycle at low pH and oligotrophic environment which subsequently played an important role in nitrification process in AMD sediment. Overall, the present study elucidated the biogeochemical significance of archaeal populations inhabiting the toxic AMD environment.Since lichens have been recognised as a potential natural source of bioactive substances, the aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial, lysozyme and antifungal effects of methanol, acetone and quencher extracts from four lichens Diploschistes ocellatus, Flavoparmelia caperata, Squamarina cartilaginea and Xanthoria parietina. The results showed that the tested extracts had antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and anti-candida, and inhibit the spore germination of tested fungi. The different extracts varied in their effect as determined by the diameter of the inhibition zone, the highest values being observed with the methanol and acetone extracts (29.5 and 27.5 mm, respectively) for S. cartilaginea against Enterococcus faecalis. For powdered material (quencher), F. caperata showed the highest inhibition diameter (25.5 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values varied from 125 to 2000 μg mL-1. Methanol extracts of S. cartilaginea were more active against Enterobacter cloacae (MIC 125 µg mL-1) and Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 125 µg mL-1), and also affected lysozyme activity against Staphylococcus aureus, as well as the morphology of fungal hyphae.
