We synthesize and characterize the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the quasi one-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid ANiCl3 compounds [A = N(CH3)4+, CH3NH3+, (CH3)2NH2+, C(NH2)3+, and CH(NH2)2+]. Additionally, the crystal structure of (CH3)2NH2NiCl3 is reported. These materials possess chains of face-sharing NiCl6 octahedra in a triangular array. The chains run in one direction and are separated from one another by organic cations of different sizes and geometries. In accordance with the 90° superexchange model, we find that the nature of the magnetic coupling within chains can be predicted by the value of the Ni-Cl-Ni angle. As the Ni-Cl-Ni angle decreases from 90°, the magnetic interactions become increasingly antiferromagnetic. These findings provide a foundation for predicting the magnetic properties of quasi one-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid ANiCl3 compounds.Although nanopores can be used for single-molecule sequencing of nucleic acids using low-cost portable devices, the characterization of proteins and their modifications has yet to be established. Here, we show that hydrophilic or glycosylated peptides translocate too quickly across FraC nanopores to be recognized. However, high ionic strengths (i.e., 3 M LiCl) and low pH (i.e., pH 3) together with using a nanopore with a phenylalanine at its constriction allows the recognition of hydrophilic peptides, and to distinguish between mono- and diglycosylated peptides. Using these conditions, we devise a nanopore method to detect, characterize, and quantify post-translational modifications in generic proteins, which is one of the pressing challenges in proteomic analysis.The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) plays crucial roles in regulation of stress responses and growth modulation. Heterotrimeric G-proteins are key mediators of ABA responses. Both ABA and G-proteins have also been implicated in intracellular redox regulation; however, the extent to which reversible protein oxidation manipulates ABA and/or G-protein signaling remains uncharacterized. To probe the role of reversible protein oxidation in plant stress response and its dependence on G-proteins, we determined the ABA-dependent reversible redoxome of wild-type and Gβ-protein null mutant agb1 of Arabidopsis. We quantified 6891 uniquely oxidized cysteine-containing peptides, 923 of which show significant changes in oxidation following ABA treatment. The majority of these changes required the presence of G-proteins. Divergent pathways including primary metabolism, reactive oxygen species response, translation and photosynthesis exhibited both ABA- and G-protein-dependent redox changes, many of which occurred on proteins not previously linked to them. We report the most comprehensive ABA-dependent plant redoxome and uncover a complex network of reversible oxidations that allow ABA and G-proteins to rapidly adjust cellular signaling to adapt to changing environments. Physiological validation of a subset of these observations suggests that functional G-proteins are required to maintain intracellular redox homeostasis and fully execute plant stress responses.
To compare rates of surgical-site infections following continuous, as compared with interrupted, subcutaneous tissue closure technique during cesarean delivery (CD).
A retrospective cohort study during 2008-2018. The study group included women who underwent either elective or emergent CD with continuous subcutaneous tissue closure, while the control group comprised those with interrupted subcutaneous tissue closure. We excluded women with suspected infectious morbidity before CD. The primary outcome was surgical-site infection (SSI) rate.
The final analysis included 6281 women. We performed continuous subcutaneous tissue closure in 37.4% (1867/4988) of scheduled CD, and 45.8% (592/1293) of emergent CD. The rate of SSI was significantly lower following continuous than interrupted subcutaneous tissue closure, in both elective CD (2.7% versus 4.5%, respectively, P= 0.031) and emergent CD (3.2% versus 5.4%, respectively, P= 0.036) in nulliparous and multiparous women. Similarly, secondary outcomes such as re-admission rates, postoperative maternal fever, and need for antibiotic treatment were significantly lower following continuous subcutaneous closure.

To evaluate the impact of a single session of psychosocial counseling on patients with vulvodynia.
Patients diagnosed with vulvodynia at a vulvovaginal specialty clinic were randomly assigned to receive either a one-on-one 30- to 45-min psychosocial counseling session with a psychosexual counselor plus written educational materials (intervention group) or written materials alone (control group). They completed a survey before and 6 weeks after randomization that included demographic information and validated measures of sexual function and illness perception.
Thirty-one of 38 (81.6%) women approached chose to participate; 26 of the 31 (83.9%) completed the 6-week follow-up survey. Only the intervention group showed improvement in knowledge about vulvovaginal and sexual health, as well as in most measures of improvement in illness perception, as measured by the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (P< 0.05). When compared directly with those in the control group, patients in the intervention group reported increased understanding of their vulvar symptoms (P< 0.005) and lessened emotional impact of these symptoms (P= 0.035).

A regional anatomy remote learning curriculum was designed and learning materials were delivered virtually to 120 undergraduate medical students at Jinan University, China. All the students consented and voluntarily participated in this study by completing self-administered online questionnaires including the Zung's Self-Rating Anxiety and Depression Scales at the beginning and end of the learning session. A subset participated in focus group discussions. Most of the students (90.0%) positively evaluated the current distance learning model. More than 80% were satisfied with the content arrangement and coverage. Many students preferred virtual lectures (68.2%) and videos showing dissections (70.6%) during the distance learning sessions. However, writing laboratory reports and case-based learning were the least preferred modes of learning as they were only preferred by 23.2% and 14.1% of the students, respectively. check details There was no significant lockdown-related anxiety or depression reported by students using depression and anxiety scales as well as feedback from focus group discussions. The surveyed students' confidence scores in distance learning were significantly higher after 5 weeks than at the beginning of the session (3.05 ± 0.83 vs. 3.70 ± 0.71, P less then 0.05). Here, we report a miniaturizable purification method that enables the rapid, high-throughput isolation of quaternary ammonium-tagged products from reaction mixtures with excellent purity using inexpensive equipment that easily can be set up in a typical organic chemistry laboratory. This novel purification technique enabled us to establish a high-throughput reaction discovery platform. We validated this platform in a screen of 1536 reactions, and one previously unreported transformation was identified.Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was conducted to characterize mcr-carrying extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (n=7). These E. coli isolates originated from two pigs (TH2 and TH3) and two humans (TH8 and TH9) from Thailand, and three pigs from Lao PDR (LA1, LA2 and LA3). Four E. coli sequence types/serotypes - ST6833/H20 (TH2 and TH3), ST48/O160H40 (TH8 and TH9), ST5708/H45 (LA1) and ST10562/O148H30 (LA2 and LA3) - were identified. The plasmid replicon type IncF was identified in all isolates. The point mutations Ser31Thr in PmrA and His2Arg in PmrB were found concurrently in all isolates (colistin MIC=4-8 µg ml-1). LA1 contained up to five point mutations in PmrB, and the colistin MIC was not significantly different from that for the other isolates. All mcr-1.1 was located in the ISApl1-mcr-1-pap2 element, while all mcr-3.1 was located in the TnAs2-mcr-3.1-dgkA-ISKpn40 element. The mcr-3.1 and blaCTX-M-55 genes were co-localized on the same plasmid, which concurrently contained cml, qnrS1 and tmrB. The blaCTX-M-55 and mcr-3.1 genes were located on conjugative plasmids and could be transferred horizontally under selective pressure from ampicillin or colistin. In conclusion, comprehensive insights into the genomic information of ESBL-producing E. coli harbouring mcr were obtained. As mcr-carrying ESBL-producing E. coli were detected in pigs and humans, a holistic and multisectoral One Health approach is required to contain antimicrobial resistance (AMR).Microglial hyperactivation mediated by sphingosine kinase 1/sphingosine-1-phosphate (SphK1/S1P) signalling and the consequent inflammatory mediator production serve as the key drivers of cerebral ischaemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI). Although SphK1 reportedly controls autophagy and microglial activation, it remains uncertain as to whether SphK1 is similarly capable of regulating damage mediated by CIRI-activated microglia. In the current study, we adopted both in vitro oxygen-glucose deprivation reperfusion (OGDR) models and in vivo rat models of focal CIRI to ascertain this possibility. It was found that CIRI upregulated SphK1 and induced autophagy in microglia, while inhibiting these changes significantly impaired to prevented neuronal apoptosis. Results of mechanistic investigation revealed that SphK1 promoted autophagy via the tumour necrosis factor receptor associated factor 2 (TRAF2) pathway. Altogether, our findings unfolded to reveal a novel mechanism, whereby SphK1-induced autophagy in microglia contributed to the pathogenesis of CIRI, potentially highlighting novel avenues for future therapeutic intervention in ischaemic stroke patients.
