With the continuous accumulation of nanoplastics (NPs) in the ocean, it becomes urgent to explore their potential effects on filter-feeding zooplankton. This study exposed marine rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis) to 0, 20, 200, and 2000 μg/L of 70-nm polystyrene NPs (PS NPs) for two generations (F0 - F1), followed by two-generation (F2 - F3) culture in clean seawater, to investigate the impacts on life-history traits. The results showed that NPs were ingested by the rotifers within 10 min and reached a maximum level after 12 h of exposure. NPs were also observed in the feces of F0 and F1 generation rotifers and on the surface of F1 generation eggs. The intake of NPs inhibited microalgae ingestion, decreased body volume, delayed the first spawning time, reduced the total number of eggs and offspring of F0 and F1 generation. Moreover, 2000 μg/L NPs postponed the first hatching time of F0 generation eggs by 2.5 h, and the hatching time of F1 generation eggs was delayed by 7.3 h and 6.8 h under 200 and 2000 μg/L NPs exposure. The first spawning time and the first hatching time of rotifers were still significantly prolonged in the F2 generation, but other life-history traits returned to normal. After being cultured in clean seawater for two generations, all these indicators were recovered to the normal level. Overall, this study demonstrates that the life-history traits of marine rotifers could be flexibly changed with/without PS NPs exposure.Photocatalysts supported in magnetic nanocomposites for application in environmental remediation processes have been evaluated for removing contaminants due to easy recovery and low toxicity to the ecosystem. In this work, copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles with photocatalytic properties were decorated on magnetic support constituted by hydroxyapatite (HAP) and ferrite to achieve efficiency in contaminated water remediation under visible light irradiation. First, nanomaterials were obtained by precipitation route, allowing fast and straightforward synthesis. Then, CuO nanoparticles with 6 nm diameter were efficiently decorated on magnetic support (25 nm), showing a high ability to absorb visible light irradiation (bandgap) to promote electronic transition and charge separation. Under visible irradiation, CuO promotes the H2O2 reduction in the conduction band (BC) to form hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which are responsible for rhodamine B (RhB) dye degradation (> 90% in 60 min). Magnetic hysteresis assays confirmed the magnetic properties of HAP/ferrite support, which enabled the recovery and reuse of the magnetic photocatalyst efficiently up to 3 cycles. Due to low Cu2+ leaching after the photocatalytic application stage, cytotoxicity assay for the Allium cepa seeds did not exhibit abnormal cells other than those commonly found. Furthermore, the CuO-decorated nanoparticles showed bactericidal activity against S. aureus (Gram-positive) and E. coli (Gram-negative) microorganisms, being more significant for the first one. The obesity epidemic poses serious challenges to health equity. Despite bariatric surgery being one of the most effective obesity treatments, utilization remains low. In this context, we explored public perceptions of bariatric surgery, centering voices of Black individuals.

Semi-structured interviews with individuals who have never considered bariatric surgery with purposive sampling to ensure the majority of participants were Black. Transcripts were iteratively analyzed. We employed an Interpretive Description framework to arrive at a collective description of perceptions of bariatric surgery.

Thirty-two participants self-identified as 88% female, 72% Black, 3% Hispanic, 3% Pacific Islander, 3% Mixed Race, and 19% White. Participants reported a complex interplay of deeply held, stigmatized beliefs about identity. According to the stigma, persons with obesity lacked willpower and thus were considered devalued. Participants internalized this stigma, describing themselves with words like "glutton," "lazys stigmatizing, but undergoing bariatric surgery would further stigmatize individuals. Thus, healthcare providers may be instrumental in increasing bariatric surgery uptake by shifting social discourse from stigmatized notions of obesity towards one focusing on health.

Evidence suggests a rise in alcohol misuse after some bariatric procedures. Whether undergoing sleeve gastrectomy raises the risk of high-risk alcohol use is unclear.

To characterize the risk of high-risk alcohol use 1year after sleeve gastrectomy and collect preliminary data on potential associations between disordered eating and high-risk drinking post-surgery.

We interviewed 97 patients before and 1year after sleeve gastrectomy and assessed for high-risk alcohol use via a modified version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C). Eating behavior was assessed using the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire Revised-18 (TFEQ-R18).

The prevalence of high-risk drinking increased from 13.4% prior to surgery to 22.7% 1year after sleeve gastrectomy; 16.5% of our sample reported new high-risk drinking equivalent to an incidence of 19.0%. New high-risk drinkers appeared more likely to report lower cognitive restraint scores and higher scores for emotional and uncontrolled eating at lace disordered eating with alcohol misuse after sleeve gastrectomy.

Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is common side effect after gastrointestinal surgery. It causses discomfort, increase risk of incision disruption, bleeding and airway blockage. This study aimed to investigate the incidence and severity of PONV and determine whether preoperative reflux or regurgitation symptoms influence PONV in patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

Patients with obesity underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) in our center between January 2016 and December 2018 were divided into PONV and NoPONV group and analyzed retrospectively. PONV and postoperative pain visual analogue scale (VAS) were analyzed after surgery. A 11 propensity score matching (PSM) method was performed, and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify predictors for PONV.

In this study, five different pectin-degrading bacteria were isolated from a healthy goat omasum. Among them, a new Klebsiella variicola strain HSTU-AAM51 was identified to degrade lignocellulose. The genome of the HSTU-AAM51 strain comprised 5,564,045 bp with a GC content of 57.2% and 5312 coding sequences. The comparison of housekeeping genes (16S rRNA, TonB, gyrase B, RecA) and whole-genome sequence (ANI, pangenome, synteny, DNA-DNA hybridization) revealed that the strain HSTU-AAM51 was clustered with Klebsiella variicola strains, but the HSTU-AAM51 strain was markedly deviated. It consisted of seventeen cellulases (GH1, GH3, GH4, GH5, GH13), fourteen beta-glucosidase (2GH3, 7GH4, 4GH1), two glucosidase, and one pullulanase genes. The strain secreted cellulase, pectinase, and xylanase, lignin peroxidase approximately 76-78 U/mL and 57-60 U/mL, respectively, when it was cultured on banana pseudostem for 96 h. To identify and review the nature, scope and use of web-based interventions for patients with head and neck cancer (HNC).

A scoping review guided by the methodological framework described by the Joanna Briggs Institute was performed to review empirical studies and websites. Seven electronic databases (CINAHL, Medline, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane, PubMed and PsycInfo) were searched from 2010 to 2020, data extracted andsynthesised using thematic analysis. The Google search engine was employed, identifying the first 100 websites, using the search term head and neck cancer. Websites meeting eligibility criteria were assessed using the QUEST analysis tool, and descriptively summarised.

Thirteen empirical studies and 32 websites were included. As identified by empirical studies, web-based interventions were developed to provide (1) patient information on HNC and related treatments, (2) advice and support during treatment and (3) management strategies promoting adjustment to life with and beyond HNC. The purpose of this study is to develop a European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Group (EORTC QLG) questionnaire that captures the full range of physical, mental, and social health-related quality of life (HRQOL) issues relevant to disease-free cancer survivors. In this phase III study, we pretested the provisional core questionnaire (QLQ-SURV111) and aimed to identify essential and optional scales.

We pretested the QLQ-SURV111 in 492 cancer survivors from 17 countries with one of 11 cancer diagnoses. We applied the EORTC QLG decision rules and employed factor analysis and item response theory (IRT) analysis to assess and, where necessary, modify the hypothesized questionnaire scales. We calculated correlations between the survivorship scales and the QLQ-C30 summary score and carried out a Delphi survey among healthcare professionals, patient representatives, and cancer researchers to distinguish between essential and optional scales.

Fifty-four percent of the sample was male, mean age was 60years, and, on average, time since completion of treatment was 3.8years. Eleven items were excluded, resulting in the QLQ-SURV100, with 12 functional and 9 symptom scales, a symptom checklist, 4 single items, and 10 conditional items. The essential survivorship scales consist of 73 items.

The QLQ-SURV100 has been developed to assess comprehensively the HRQOL of disease-free cancer survivors. It includes essential and optional scales and will be validated further in an international phase IV study.

The availability of this questionnaire will facilitate a standardized and robust assessment of the HRQOL of disease-free cancer survivors.
