Objective To determine whether Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists or Sodium Glucose Transporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors result in greater A1c reduction, weight loss, and reduction of insulin requirements in veterans using multiple daily doses of insulin. Methods This retrospective, single-site, cohort study included patients of VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System with a diagnosis of Type II Diabetes utilizing multiple daily dose insulin and an SGLT-2 inhibitor or GLP-1 agonist. SAS Enterprise Guide was utilized to complete a multivariate analysis of variance to evaluate all outcomes. Key Findings 150 patients met selection criteria. The GLP-1 group averaged a .65% reduction in A1c compared to a 1.05% reduction in the SGLT-2 group (P = .1397). The Basal insulin dose was reduced by 5.5 units in the GLP-1 group vs 2.45 units in the SGLT-2 group (P = .3132), and 7.12 units vs 8.14 units respectively for short-acting insulin (P = .8170). The resulting weight reduction was 4.1 Kg in the GLP-1 group compared to 3.6 Kg in the SGLT-2 group (P = .6993). Conclusion The results suggest there is not a statistically significant difference in changes to A1c, insulin requirements, or weight after 1 year of treatment with an SGLT-2 vs GLP-1 in patients using multiple daily insulin injections.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of 0.15% sodium hyaluronate (SH) on tear film breakup time (TFBT) in healthy anesthetized cats.
Forty cats undergoing elective surgery were enrolled. TFBT was assessed before anesthesia to obtain baseline values. As a preanesthetic medication, cats received midazolam, tramadol, and cetamine combined in the same syringe. For anesthetic induction and maintenance, propofol and isoflurane were used. After a 15 min stabilization period to achieve the surgical anesthetic plane, one eye was treated with one drop of SH, while the other eye received saline and served as a control. TFBT was measured at the end of the general anesthesia (T40) and 35 (T75) and 80 min (T120) after the termination of the anesthesia. TFBT values were compared between the control and SH-treated eyes; both values were also compared with the baseline values (p < .05).
In the control eyes, TFBT significantly decreased from baseline at all time points (p < .001), while in SH-treated eyes, TFBT significantly increased from baseline only at T40 (p < .0001). In SH-treated eyes, TFBT was significantly higher than that in the control eyes at all time points (p < .001).
In healthy cats, TFBT decreases significantly after 40 min of general anesthesia, and one drop of 0.15% sodium hyaluronate was able to maintain the stability of the tear film for up to 75 min in treated eyes. However, the isolated effect of each drug used in our anesthetic protocol on TFBT should be executed in further studies.

Surveillance is a useful tool for tracking antimicrobial resistance (AMR) trends, patterns, therapeutic and policy interventions. Proper correlation of surveillance data gives meaningful insight into the underlying epidemiology and facilitates development of rational interventions. This comprehensive review aims to identify, classify and assess gaps in Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS) reporting and national action plan (NAP) implementation in Africa.
Articles published in English were searched across five electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase, AJOL and Cochrane) and grey literature. Articles were screened against inclusion/exclusion criteria and data from eligible studies were retrieved and analysed. At the genetic epicenter of dog transplantation models, polymorphic major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes are most impactful on transplantation success. Among the canine class I and class II genes, DLA-88 has been best studied in transplantation matching and outcomes, with 129 DLA-88 alleles identified. In this study we developed and tested a next generation (NGS) sequencing protocol for rapid identification of DLA-88 genotypes in dogs and compared the workflow and data generated with an established DLA-88 Sanger sequencing protocol that has been in common prior use for clinical studies. By testing the NGS protocol on a random population of 382 dogs, it was possible to demonstrate superior efficacy based on laboratory execution and overall cost. In addition, NGS proved far more effective at discovering new alleles and detecting multiple alleles associated with gene duplication. A total of 51 new DLA-88 alleles are reported here. BI-2493 cost This rate of new allele discovery indicates that a large pool of yet un-discovered DLA-88 alleles exists in the domestic dog population. Daptomycin is a bactericidal lipopeptide antibiotic approved for the treatment of systemic infections (i.e. skin and soft tissue infections, bloodstream infections, infective endocarditis) caused by Gram-positive cocci. It is often prescribed in association with a partner drug to increase its bactericidal effect and to prevent the emergence of resistant strains during treatment; however, its synergistic properties are still under evaluation.
We performed a systematic review to offer clinicians an updated overview of daptomycin synergistic properties from in vitro and in vivo studies. Moreover, we reported all in vitro and in vivo data evaluating daptomycin in combination with other antibiotic agents, subdivided by antibiotic classes, and a summary graph presenting the most favourable combinations at a glance.
A total of 92 studies and 1087 isolates (723 Staphylococcus aureus, 68 Staphylococcus epidermidis, 179 Enterococcus faecium, 105 Enterococcus faecalis, 12 Enterococcus durans) were included. Synergism accounted for 30.9% of total interactions, while indifferent effect was the most frequently observed interaction (41.9%). Antagonistic effect accounted for 0.7% of total interactions. The highest synergistic rates against S. aureus were observed with daptomycin in combination with fosfomycin (55.6%). For S. epidermidis and Enterococcus spp., the most effective combinations were daptomycin plus ceftobiprole (50%) and daptomycin plus fosfomycin (63.6%) or rifampicin (62.8%), respectively.

Several studies on street children in Iran reported a high prevalence of alcohol consumption among this group. This study assessed the prevalence of lifetime alcohol use and correlated factors among street children in Iran.
We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 856 street children from six provinces of Iran. Behavioral data were collected by trained interviewers using a structured questionnaire. Our target outcome was lifetime alcohol use. We examined associations between individual variables and lifetime alcohol use using the chi-square. A multiple logistic regression model included variables with a p-value<.2. Lastly, we reported the adjusted odds ratio (an OR) point estimate and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) as the effect measure.
Mean age and standard deviation (SD) of alcohol drinkers were 14.94±2.16. Overall, 16.6% (CI95% 14.38%, 19.55%) of participants reported lifetime alcohol use, and almost 60% of children reported alcohol use over three past months. In the final model, factors that were independently associated with alcohol use included the 15-18 age range (AOR 2.35, 95% CI 1.48-3.73), Iranian nationality (AOR 3.36, 95% CI 2.07-5.45), working longer than 5 years in the streets (AOR 2.90, 95% CI 1.72-4.88), father's drug use (AOR 1.93, 95% CI 1.22-3.01), and illiteracy (AOR 1.65, 95% CI 1.03-2.66).

Herein, genome-level microbial metabolisms and As cycling strategies in Tengchong geothermal springs were demonstrated for the first time based on metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses. Sulfur cycling was dominated by Aquificae oxidizing thiosulfate via the sox system, fueling the respiration and carbon dioxide fixation processes. Arsenate reduction via arsC [488.63 ± 271.60 transcripts per million (TPM)] and arsenite efflux via arsB (442.98 ± 284.81 TPM) were the primary detoxification pathway, with most genes and transcripts contributed by the members in phylum Aquificae. A complete arsenotrophic cycle was also transcriptionally active as evidenced by the detection of aioA transcripts and arrA transcript reads mapped onto metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) affiliated with Crenarchaeota. MAGs affiliated with Aquificae had great potential of reducing arsenate via arsC and fixing nitrogen and carbon dioxide via nifDHK and reductive tricarboxylic acid (rTCA) cycle, respectively.
