In this study, we described the comparison among pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), ribotyping, and PCR-ribotyping methods for subtyping Salmonella Enteritidis isolated from an industrial chicken production chain. One hundred and eight S. Enteritidis were isolated at all stages of poultry meat processing plant. These isolates were pheno- and genotypically characterized by using antimicrobial susceptibility test, phage typing, RAPD, PFGE, ribotyping, and PCR-ribotyping. The highest antibiotic resistance rates were observed for enrofloxacin (18.5%) followed by furazolidone (15.7%), cefoxitin (1.8%), ciprofloxacin, and ampicillin with 0.9% each one, while seven isolates (6.4%) were pan-susceptible. Most strains belonged to the globally disseminated phage type PT4 (n = 74; 69.2%). Additionally, we identified strains belonging to phage types PT1 (n = 19; 17.8%) and PT7a (n = 14; 13.1%). Moreover, our results showed that these four molecular methods indicate similar results showing high similarity (≥ 90%) among S. Enteritidis strains, suggesting that these isolates appear to be from a common ancestor being spread at all stages of the poultry production chain. In summary, the combined molecular approaches of these methods remain a suitable alternative to efficiently subtyping S. Enteritidis in the absence of high-resolution genotyping methods and these results may serve as a baseline study for development of mitigation strategies. The aim of this work was to gain a more comprehensive and perspicacious view of the endophytic diazotrophic community (EDC) of tomato plant bacteria and assess the effects of chemical fertilization and the plant phenologic stage on the status of those microbes. When the EDC of stem and roots from tomato plants grown in a greenhouse with and without exogenous chemical fertilization was examined by pyrosequencing the nifH gene during the growth cycle, a high taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity was observed. The abundant taxa were related to ubiquitous endophytes such as Rhizobium or Burkholderia but also involved anaerobic members usually restricted to flooded plant tissues, such as Clostridium, Geobacter, and Desulfovibrio. The EDC composition appeared to be dynamic during the growth phase of the tomato, with the structure of the community at the early stages of growth displaying major differences from the late stages. Inorganic fertilization negatively affected the diversity and modified the profile of the predominant components of the EDC in the different growth stages. Populations such as Burkholderia and Geobacter plus the Cyanobacteria appeared particularly affected by fertilization. Our work demonstrates an extensive endophytic diazotrophic diversity, suggesting a high potential for nitrogen fixation. The effect of the phenologic stage and inorganic-chemical soil fertilization on the community structure indicated a dynamic community that responded to environmental changes. These findings contribute to a better understanding of endophytic associations that could be helpful in assisting to shape the endomicrobiome that provides essential benefits to crops. We propose to interpret tasks evoking the classical Müller-Lyer illusion as one form of a conflict paradigm involving relevant (line length) and irrelevant (arrow orientation) stimulus attributes. Eight practiced observers compared the lengths of two line-arrow combinations; the length of the lines and the orientation of their arrows was varied unpredictably across trials so as to obtain psychometric and chronometric functions for congruent and incongruent line-arrow combinations. To account for decision speed and accuracy in this parametric data set, we present a diffusion model based on two assumptions inward (outward)-pointing arrows added to a line (i) add (subtract) a separate, task-irrelevant drift component, and (ii) they reduce (increase) the distance to the barrier associated with the response identifying this line as being longer. The model was fitted to the data of each observer separately, and accounted in considerable quantitative detail for many aspects of the data obtained, including the fact that arrow-congruent responses were most prominent in the earliest RT quartile-bin. Our model gives a specific, process-related meaning to traditional static interpretations of the Müller-Lyer illusion, and combines within a single coherent framework structural and strategic mechanisms contributing to the illusion. Its central assumptions correspond to the general interpretation of geometrical-optical illusions as a manifestation of the resolution of a perceptual conflict (Day & Smith, 1989; Westheimer, 2008).Eriksen's zoom model of attention implies a trade-off between the breadth and resolution of representations of information. Following this perspective, we used Eriksen's flanker task to investigate culture's influence on attentional allocation and attentional resolution. In Experiment 1, the spatial distance of the flankers was varied to test whether people from Eastern cultures (here, Turks) experienced more interference than people from Western cultures (here, Americans) when flankers were further from the target. In Experiment 2, the contrast of the flankers was varied. The pattern of results shows that congruency of the flankers (Experiment 1) as well as the degree of contrast of the flankers compared with the target (Experiment 2) interact with participants' cultural background to differentially influence accuracy or reaction times. In addition, we used evidence accumulation modeling to jointly consider measures of speed and accuracy. Results indicate that to make decisions in the Eriksen flanker task, Turks both accumulate evidence faster and require more evidence than Americans do. These cultural differences in visual attention and decision-making have implications for a wide variety of cognitive processes.Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally, among which acute myocardial infarction (AMI) frequently occurs in the heart and proceeds from myocardium ischemia and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced cell death. Numerous studies on miRNAs indicated their potential as diagnostic biomarkers and treatment targets for heart diseases. find more Our study investigated the role of miR-17-5p and its regulatory mechanisms during AMI. Echocardiography, MTT, flow cytometry assay, evaluation of caspase-3 and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity were conducted to assess cell viability, apoptosis in an MI/R mice model, and an H2O2-induced H9c2 hypoxia cell model, respectively. The expression levels of ER stress response-related biomarkers were detected using qRT-PCR, IHC, and western blotting assays. The binding site of miR-17-5p on Tsg101 mRNA was determined by bioinformatic prediction and luciferase reporter assay. The expression levels of miR-17-5p were notably elevated in MI/R mice and hypoxia cell models, accompanied by enhanced cell apoptosis.
